AgricultureHow Do I Start A Beekeeping As A Beginner. by Sidof1212(op): 3:45pm On Mar 08, 2025
HOW DO I GET STARTED?

Becoming a Beekeeper requires no huge investment as long as one is very observant and passionate about the insect's behaviour. Getting started in beekeeping is like a child's play. Some started as a hobby with just 2 - 5 hives in their orchard and keep increasing them from time to time when they start realizing some money from it. In furtherance to this; the need to acquire enough knowledge about bees in order to greatly understand their environment is equally very important. This makes it easy for you to manage and handle bees correctly. It also allows you to succeed in keeping bees in your farm. Being a Beekeeper is not as tedious as most people likely think it only requires sheer patience and dexterity.

It is easier than you might imagine starting beekeeping, and you don't need any of the expensive equipment. Everything you need to keep bees successfully can be made by anyone with a few simple tools; if you can put up a shelf, you can probably build a beehives especially Kenya top-bar hive. After acquisition of knowledge on the arts and science of beekeeping; other materials and equipment that will get you started are:

● A piece of land; not necessarily owned by you; with forage plants, bees love to visit for nectar and pollen commonly referred to as "Melliferous plants" .

● About 2- 10 unit of hives, Kenya top bar hive with 20- 30 top- bars as a beginner .

● Hive tool - this can be substitute with your kitchen Knife.

● Bee brush- can be substituted with any soft brush or leaf.

● Hive stands - can be made with wood, iron or sand Crete blocks. You can also hang the hives on trees branches that are not too high for easy inspection and sturdy enough to accommodate the weight during honey flow period. If you choose wooden stand, make sure it is treated for protection against termite and wood borders.

● Bee dress made of white, brown, cream or green color material together with veil, hand glove and boot. Make sure the material of your bee dress is not too thick to prevent suffocation from heat while working or too light that may permit bee sting so easily.

● Smoker.
