https://exclusiveloaded.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/FAYOSE-IN-COURT.FEDERAL-702x336.jpg Following entreaties by the Ewi of Ado-Ekiti, Oba Rufus Adejugbe Aladesanmi 111, foremost lawyer, Aare Afe Babalola (SAN) and the Catholic Bishop of Ekiti, Right Revd. Felix Ajakaye and others, Ekiti State Governor, Mr. Ayodele Fayose, has lifted the suspension placed on the Secretary to the State Government, Dr (Mrs.) Modupe Alade. The personalities pleaded on behalf of the SSG during the celebration of the 25th coronation anniversary of Oba Adejugbe Aladesanmi in Ado- Ekiti yesterday. The SSG, who was suspended some days ago for three months by the governor has therefore been pardoned and asked to resume duties tomorrow. Setting the tone for seeking pardon for the SSG, the Ewi said his joy on the occasion would not be complete if the governor did not accede to the request. In his response, the governor said he had no choice other than to defer to the eminent personalities, but warned against indiscipline on the part of public officers and civil servants. He noted that though he is a kindhearted governor, he would not compromise discipline. Babalola, who was the chairman on the occasion, had listed the qualities that made Fayose excel as a governor. “He is kind and listens to advice and wise counsel. He does not say he is the governor and would lord it over everybody. When the tipper drivers had issues with him over the N1000 levy, the drivers came to me to intervene and I called the governor on the phone. Though he was in Afao-Ekiti, he came down to Ado-Ekiti, and heeded my plea on behalf of the drivers and reduced the levy to N500,” he said. He described Fayose as a realistic and pragmatic person, who has brought those qualities to governance. He said with the dwindling revenue base of the government at all tiers, those in leadership positions have to put in extra efforts to meet the yearning and aspirations of the people. “Thank God that we have a governor that is realistic and pragmatic. When he says yes it is yes, and when he says no it is no. We have a governor that is truthful, honest and transparent, and that has been helping us in the state. It has also manifested in the recent award given the state government. We have 36 states in the federation and a survey was conducted on budgetary implementation, and the Fayose-led government was rated as the most transparent in the country. Those states that call themselves big rated low on the scale. This shows that the governor has been handling the affairs of the state well,” he said. Babalola, who is also the founder of the Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD), called on the people to return to the farm, saying agriculture was the surest way out of unemployment and poor revenue in the country. In his speech, Fayose, who was the guest of honour, promised to attend any similar event organised in honour of any traditional ruler in the state. “The governor is for all traditional rulers and people of the state. I want to assure our royal fathers that an occasion like this is not limited to Ado as many of our royal fathers who are having such a great event like this, the governor is at your beck and call. Ado is central to us as a state and I am for all royal fathers and any event that tells the history of your existence, I will always be part of it. I also promise that by God’s grace, the new Ojaba Market, if not completed by this time next year, will be near completion,” he said. In his remarks, Oba Adejugbe Aladesanmi 111 thanked Fayose for his tremendous efforts at developing Ado-Ekiti and the state at large. “Ado people cannot thank you, Governor Ayodele Fayose enough. You have helped us a great deal and we pray that God will continue to support and bless you. http://sunnewsonline.com/new/fayose-reinstates-suspended-ssg/ |

The traditional rulers, led by the Olufi of Gbongan, Oba Adetoyese Oyeniyi Odugbemi, lamented that their towns have been in darkness for several months and demanded immediate restoration of power. They said youths of their various domains threatened to attack their palaces if they fail to do something about the problem. They insisted that they would not go back to their various palaces without a promise from the power holding company to restore power to their communities. The communities include; Ikire, Apomu, Ikoyi, Odeyinka, Orile-Owu, Araromi-Owu, Gbongan,Akiriboto Oke, Akiriboto Isale, Oluwada,Wakajaye, Ogbaaga, Ode-Omu, Oogi, Tonkere, Lasole, Edunabon,Maro, Yakoyo, Ipetumodu, Ashipa and Akinlalu. The Olufi of Gbongan lamented that they wrote to the company on November 7, over the issue but that they did not receive any response. He lamented that businesses of many residents in the communities, especially those of artisans have suffered adversely due to lack of electricity. He said: “The youths don’t believe us anymore. They think we are doing nothing about the situation and soon they could go crazy if the problem is not addressed.” The IBEDC Regional Technical Manager for Osogbo, Engineer Salami Waheed, pleaded with the traditional rulers to pacify their subjects, saying power outage in the areas was not deliberate. He attributed the problem to an explosion at the Ife station. The Principal Manager of the Transmission Company of Nigeria in Osogbo office, Mr. Ade Odukale, assured that before end of the week, power would be restored to the affected areas. http://www.dailytrust.com.ng/news/general/osun-traditional-rulers-protest-power-outage/120212.html |

Ekiti State Governor, Mr Ayodele Fayose, has again advised President Muhammadu Buhari to be equitable in the appointments of people into positions, reiterating that Mrs Amina Zakari headship of the Independent National Electoral Commission, is dangerous to the country’s electoral system. In a dramatic manner, Fayose also appointed a 72-year old Carpenter and illiterate, Mr Olatunde Afolayan as the caretaker chairman of Moba Local Government. Fayose, also sworn in members of the State Independent Electoral Commission, headed by a retired Chief Judge of the State, Justice Kayode Bamisile , to be able to conduct local government elections before the end of the year. After administering the oaths on the appointees in Ado Ekiti on Friday, Fayose told President Buhari to remove Mrs Zakari as INEC’s Acting Chairman , while also urging him to be equitable in appointing the National Electoral Commissioners that would preside over the sensitive body. Commenting on his resolve to conduct local government election, latest by December this year, Fayose said members “of this honourable commission must be men of impeccable characters. So, whoever has anything against any of the members must come forward to prove it and if you do I will remove such person immediately. “It baffles me when leaders make their in-laws or friend or relations members of electoral body. This is immoral. “ I have criticized President Buhari for making Mrs Amina Zakari the head of INEC in the country based on certain reasons and I cannot afford to toe the same line. So, the people I have here are those that can do us proud. I urge you to discharge your duty without fear or favour”. Afolayan, who was sworn-in as caretaker chairman of Moba local Government , was inaugurated alongside Mrs Omolara Bayode Ayeni and Mr Owolabi Ajewole, who were to superintend over Ikole and Ijero Councils respectively, following resignation of those that had earlier appointed by the governor. Fayose said many of the champions of democracy in Nigeria depends on illiterates to survive during electioneering campaigns , lamenting that “some of us used to get to the positions and forget these people. “In my government, whether you are educated or not, you will get something. The vote of a professor and an illiterate is the same. So, under my administration, those who are not educated can rise to any level they want”, he said. The governor had right inside the hall where the inauguration was performed appointed a graduate from the Ijero local government to serve as Personal Assistant to the new council boss. Afolayan, who commended the governor for the kind gesture said, what he expected was for the governor to make him a ward chairman, promising to surpass the records left behind by his predecessors to justify Fayose’s stand that local people are intelligent and visionary. “I had never gone to school for a day, but that does not diminish my intelligence. I may not be educated or certificated, but I have brain and experience to pilot the affairs of the council. Tactically referring to the refusal of former factional speaker of the Ekiti State house of assembly, Hon Dele Olugbemi to reject his membership of the House of Assembly Service Commission, Fayose said it was only God that saved him for the recent impeachment contrary to the claim of some people, he accused of double dealing during the crisis. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/08/again-fayose-criticises-buharis-lopsided-appointment/ |

https://www.vanguardngr.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/EDWIN-CLARK.jpg ABUJA- FORMER Federal Commissioner for Information and South South leader, Chief Edwin Clark, yesterday lampooned the Presidential Candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, General Muhammadu Buhari, retd who said that he will not probe leaders who have been overseeing Nigeria’s affairs from 1999 till date, saying that with that position, Buhari had nothing to offer Nigeria and not sincere with his anti- corruption crusade. Addressing Journalists yesterday at his Asokoro residence, Abuja, Chief Clark said that Buhari’s declaration was an indication that him and others in the APC were bare- face liars, hypocrites, dishonest, insincere and lack integrity to govern Nigeria as a country, just as he stressed that his moves were to protect those around him whom he alleged were corrupt and facing charges in various forms. The Elder Statesman called on President Goodluck Jonathan to as a matter of urgency sack the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Ibrahim Lamorde as well as carry out a total re- Organisation of the Commission if it must carry out effective discharge of its saddled responsibility of investigating and prosecuting corrupt Nigerians. Clark who noted that the anti-graft agency has failed to prosecute corrupt persons past officials of government, stressed that the Commission only go after those involved in cyber and petty crimes. The elder states man however listed as corrupt, former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal, former Governor of Kwara state, Senator Bukola Saraki, Governor of Rivers state, Rotimi Amaechi and former FCT minister, Nasir El Rufai, just as he said that because these Nigerians were in Buhari’s camp, he has now promised not to probe them if he becomes the President of the country. Others on Clark’s list include, Governor of Imo state, Rochas Okorocha, Governor of Kano state, Rabiu Musa Kwakwanso, former Governor of Lagos state, Bola Tinubu and former Governor of Adamawa state, Murtala Nyako; Senator Danjuma Goje, Senator Saminu Turaki, Senator Abdullahi Adamu and Professor Babalola Borishade. The APC Presidential candidate, Muhammadu Buhari who spoke in Hausa in Kaduna during the zonal rally held at the International Trade Fair had said, “On the issue of past corrupt leaders facing trials in various courts across the country, I would allow the courts to decide on those cases, but whoever that is indicted of cor ruption between 1999 to the time of swearing- in, would be pardoned. I am going to draw a line, anybody who involved himself in corruption after I assume office, will face the music.” According to the Chief Clark, the implication of Buhari’s statement was that those who were facing corrupt charges or alleged of corruption before May 29, 2015 would be pardoned and it was so because there was already a fight in camp of APC, adding that those funding his campaign were beginning to question him whether he will prosecute them when he gets into power. The Elder Statesman Clark who noted that Buhari changed the tune of his music as to when he will begin his fight against corruption because of the big names who are with him, said that the APC was not qualified to fight corruption contrary to what Buhari had said during his campaign. Clark said, “General Muhammadu Buhari has always anchored his campaign promises on two planks: to wipe out insecurity and corruption. With the renewed offensive against the terrorists leading to the killing and dislodgement of the Boko Haran anarchists, the first campaign plank of Buhari has been given a technical knock- out by President Goodluck Jonathan and the whole world is witnessing the reclaiming of all territories hitherto held by Boko Haram. “This leaves him on a one-legged platform. Again on the remaining plank; corruption, General Buhari himself got jittery and gave himself another technical knock-out when he said that he will not probe past leaders. With this development, Buhari has conceded that he has nothing more to offer the good people of this country. “I am puzzled to hear Buhari say that ‘whoever has been indicted o corruption between 1999 to the time of hid swearing-in would be pardoned. According to him, like a village sports man, he will draw a line, anybody who involves himself in corruption after he assumes office on May 29, 2015 will face the music, while no matter how corrupt a person has been before then, he/she would be asked to go and sin no more. “One wonders if the man, Buhari knows what the law says about corruption. Will General Muhammadu Buhari’s proclamation take the effect of law? “The declaration of Buhari clearly shows that he and his co-travellers in APC are bare-face liars, hypocrites, dishonest, insincere and lack integrity simply because they want power and are bent on pursuing to psychotic level. “What is Buhari really afraid of? Why is he promising a blanket pardon to all corrupt office holders before the election? Is that his new selling point? Supposing it was possible for Buhari to win election which is not, can he start the fight against corruption with himself and his APC cohort since most of them are already standing trial in court. Why can’t he be bold enough to colla spode by its name? I believe that 0 corrupt person by whatever name is still 0 corrupt person. And there are more corrupt people in the society today who ore members of the APC. Suffice to quickly take 0 mental excursion into the allegations against a few of them if Buhari is oblivious of these facts. On allegation of corruption against Obasanjo, Tinubu, others, Chief Clark who said he was waiting for them to drag him to court, specifically stated that when Buhari was the Federal Commissioner of Petroleum, the sum of USD 2.8 billion went missing under his watch. According to him, all the allegations against the eminent leaders of APC were within the knowledge of the anti graft agencies but were not being investigated and prosecuted spiritedly. According to him, “had the agencies charged with fighting corruption been up and doing, no one will accuse President Jonathan of not doing enough to fight corruption. Given that nothing substantial is being done, one is primed to advise Mr. President to immediately reorganize the EFCC for effective discharge of its mandate. “In all advanced democracies, anti-graft agencies would swing into action following the kind of revelations and allegations against most people walking free on our streets today Unfortunately, our own anti graft agencies have simply adopted a ‘sidon look’ position”. On former President Obasanjo, he said, “One recalls that in a petition to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) by the Conference of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP) against the former president Obasanjo, he was accused of robbing the country of over USD$ 900 billion and about N 1 .4 trillion. “According to the petition, between 2000 and 2006, Nigeria lost over USD$130 billion unaccounted revenue when Obasanjo illegally superintended over the Ministry of Petroleum Resources as its Minister while holding sway as Nigerian President. It further noted that the cost of corruption under Chief Olusegun Obasanjo reached. earth- shaking proportions as Obasanjo withdrew well over N 1 trillion “unauthorized and unappropriated by the National· Assembly from the NNPC and federation occounts.” adding that it regarded those withdrawals as gross economic and financial crime." On Buhari, Chief Clark said, “As Federal commissioner (Minister) of petroleum, the sum of USD$2.8 billion dollars’ went missing under his watch. It has become clearer now that the Shagari government (1979-1983), incurred Buhari’s wrath when it decided to investigate the USUSD$2.8 billion that disappeared from the Midland Bank, London account of the Nigerian National Petroleum Cooperation, (NNPC), during General Obasanjo’s era as military head of state. The late Senator Olusola Saraki headed the Senate Committee set up to trace the stolen money after some three years of clamour for such an investigation by members of the civil society. The Committee’s report was presented to the Senate during the tail end of Shagari’s regime in 1983, so the House decided to deal with the matter and expose the military head of the NNPC soon after the 1983 general elections. But Buhari and his co coup plotters overthrew that government and that ended the probe.” On Tambuwal he said, “While former Speaker Dimeji Bankole was arrested by the EFCC in his house, Alhaji Aminu Tambuwal was noted to have hid himself over night in the chambers of the House to evade arrest for alleged corrupt practices as the then Deputy whip of the House of Representatives. Thereafter, he was elected the speaker. Why has the EFCC not concluded the investigation into those allegations? What did he really do? Nigerians need to know, what happened that a whole Honourable Aminu Tambuwal would evade arrest by a law enforcement agency.” http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/03/clark-lampoons-buhari-lists-obasanjo-tinubu-tambuwal-amaechi-others-as-corrupt-persons/ |
The PDP Governors Forum on Monday said that the party will win elections in all the states in the south of the country including Lagos. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Chairman of the Forum and Governor of Akwa Ibom, Godswill Akpabio said this at a meeting of the forum in Lagos. Speaking to newsmen before the commencement of the meeting, Mr. Akpabio said the PDP will win on first ballot because it was a national party. “Forget the propaganda you see. We are on ground and we believe PDP will win. “PDP is the party to beat. We are not panicking because we have presence across 120, 000 polling units across the nation. “We are in Lagos because Lagos is a strategic place. We have to re-strategize to ensure free, fair and credible elections. “We came to brainstorm on how to win the election,” he said. He re-assured Nigerians that the party will ensure that the elections were credible. “We intend to discuss everything concerning the election. We have a responsibility to ensure the stability of Nigeria and Nigerians because we are the party in power. “PDP is not callous to create problems in Nigeria,” Mr. Akpabio said. Also Speaking, Gov Jonah Jang of Plateau called on INEC to be sure of the effectiveness of the card reader before using it. “INEC said they could not use the card reader in the Osun election because it was sensitive but between the national election and Osun election, which is more sensitive,” he queried. NAN reports that also at the meeting were Govs Liyel Imoke of Cross River, Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa, Ibrahim Shema of Katsina and Olusegun Mimiko of Ondo. Others are, Govs Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti, Ibrahim Dankwabo of Gombe, Mukhtar Yero of Kaduna and PDP governorship candidate for Lagos State, Mr Jimi Agbaje. LAGOS —In an unprecedented move, the Governor of Imo State and Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum, Owelle Rochas Okorocha has admitted Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, the governorship candidate of the All progressives Congress, APC, in Lagos into the Forum ahead of the polls scheduled for April 11. The action, said to be prophetic, took place during the town hall meeting at Amuwo Odofin Local government yesterday where Governor Okorocha said he was very sure of the victory for Ambode at the forthcoming election as the people of Lagos have already accepted him. He said: ‘’Ambode, a man with a track record of excellent performance who served for 27 years in Lagos as Auditor General of Local governments and later the Accountant General of the State is the best thing to happen to Lagos. ‘’He possesses the wealth of experience to take Lagos to the next level.’’ He charged all the Igbos in Lagos to cast their vote for this man of destiny who God has prepared for this season. He noted that their lot will only be better under an APC-led government in Lagos. He later presented Ambode and the deputy Governor candidate, Alhaja Adegbule to the people. Ambode thanked Okorocha and all the people in attendance at the meeting. He promised to complete at least 25 roads in all the local government in four years. He also promised accelerated and all encompassing development for Lagos. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/03/okorocha-admits-ambode-into-governors-forum-ahead-of-polls/ |

The Centre for Social Justice on Monday expressed worry over what it described as the continuous violation of the provisions of the Electoral Act as regards campaign financing by the two main opposition political parties – the Peoples Democratic Party and the All Progressives Congress. The Lead Director, CENSOJ, Mr. Eze Onyekpere, while briefing journalists in Abuja on the development, said both parties had so far spent a whopping N4.97bn on publicity, to market their presidential candidates. He said the N4.97bn so far spent on campaign for the presidential candidates of both political parties was a gross violation of the provisions of the Electoral Act. The Electoral Act 2010 (as amended) provides a ceiling on campaign expenditure of candidates. At the presidential level, it limits the candidates to spending not more than N1bn while it goes further to provide sanctions for spending above the ceiling. The sanction is a maximum fine of N1m or imprisonment of 12 months or both. But Onyekpere said findings by the group revealed that both parties had violated this provision and should be sanctioned accordingly. For instance, he said between December 2014 and February 2015, the PDP had spent N3.55bn on publicity alone while that of the APC for the same period stood at N1.42bn. Giving a breakdown of the expenses, he said of the N3.55bn, the PDP spent N1.05bn on campaigns in the print media to market President Goodluck Jonathan while adverts in non-print media was put at N2.5bn. For the APC, he said the party spent N332.58m in the print media, campaigning for Maj. Gen. Muhammed Buhari(retd.) while the non-print media expenses were put at N1.09bn. Onyekpere added, “Although, declining oil prices contributed to Nigeria’s deteriorating macro- economic fundamentals, the coincidence of campaign spending and the acceleration of the deterioration brings to the fore the inextricable link between election spending and the health of the economy. “With the attention shifted from governance and a lot of expenditure on campaigns, the state of the economy in terms of depreciating exchange rate, inflation and reduced economic growth are bound to occur.” Eze called on the Independent National Electoral Commission in collaboration with security agencies to caution both political parties. The All Progressives Congress in Ekiti State has warned workers in the state not to be deceived by Governor Ayodele Fayose’s claims of gloomy financial position of the state. The party said the governor had been laying claims of poor financial state “to deceive and deny workers of their entitlements.” APC Publicity Secretary, Taiwo Olatubosun, in a statement on Monday said the advice became imperative because Fayose had been using over- bloated debt figures as alibi for the government’s failure to pay salary and other obligations to workers. Olatubosun said monies saved from hundreds of Ekiti workers sacked and the bond debts payment suspended for six months as well as several promotions that were reversed and cancellation of empowerment schemes should have been enough to pay workers entitlements, particularly as allocations payment was regular. “It is good that Ekiti people know the kind of governor they have. In one breath, he said he spends N1.4b to pay salary monthly. The next minute, he said it is N1.6b in the same broadcast, which gave him away, as usual, as a man playing games with the lives of Ekiti people. All these mathematical gymnastics are callous demonstration of breach of faith in government and the governed relations,” he said, adding: “What is the governor doing with full monthly federal allocation to the state when the bond debt repayment has been suspended for six months? 300 members of Traffic Management Agency have been sent packing. 800 members of Volunteer Peace Corps have been relieved of their jobs. “Social Security scheme for 20,000 old people receiving N5000 every month each has been cancelled. This is apart from the over 20,000 Youth Volunteers earning N10,000 monthly who have also been disengaged by Fayose. “Many of the youths who were trained in various skills under the Fayemi administration by Odua Skills Acquisition Centre have been abandoned by Fayose while the programme has been replaced with a pedestrian concept of stomach infrastructure. “Teachers’ special allowances for rural postings and core subjects have been abolished while workers, including primary and secondary school teachers, who were promoted since April last year, had their promotions reversed. “The security agencies are no longer well-funded, leading to the current armed robbery cases across the state. Streetlights are turned off at 10.00pm on the excuse of the cost of fuel, thus paralyzing night life and causing insecurity as well as putting in jeopardy late night business activities in the state capital,” he added. https://exclusiveloaded.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/Fayose-360x225.jpg Another press release from Ekiti state governor, Ayo Fayose. See below... "Ekiti State Governor, Mr Ayodele Fayose has said that the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its presidential candidate, Major General Mohammadu Buhari (rtd) no longer have moral rights to participate in the March 28 presidential election having lied to Nigerians on several occasions. According to a press statement issued in Ado-Ekiti by his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, the governor noted with dismay the contemptuous manner in which the APC and Buhari hold Nigeria and its people. The governor, who vowed that Nigeria will never be ruled by deceit, said; "In saner climes, you can't lie and be discovered to have lied repeatedly as done by the APC and still want to stand for elections." He said; "The new deceit from the APC is to use a photoshoped picture of Buhari for posters in Lagos, making him look like a 50 year old man, whereas he is as old as my mother and cannot survive the rigours of office even as a governor not to talk of President of Nigeria." He noted that it was appalling that despite being found to have lied on several occasions, the APC has never deemed it necessary to apologise to Nigerians for trying to deceive them. His words; "First, the APC Vice Presidential candidate, Prof Yemi Osinbajo, a supposed pastor posted picture of Reinhard Bonke crusade on his Twitter Handle, claiming that the picture was that of APC campaign rally in Kano. "Second, the APC claimed that Buhari made a surprise visit to Chibok and went further to lie that the people and parents of Chibok girls were filled with hope and joy upon sighting Buhari and his entourage, and escorted him into Chibok with singing and dancing. "Third, the APC cabal claimed that Buhari travelled to the United Kingdom on a working visit and used fake pictures to back up their lies that Buhari met with ex-British Prime minister, Tony Blair and had a television interview in London. "Even when Buhari's wife admitted that her husband was in the UK to rest, the APC cabal went on with their lies, using pictures taken in Transcorp Hilton, Abuja as proof of Buhari's activities in London. "If a party and its candidate could lie so brazenly as done by the APC and Buhari, do they still have moral rights to want to rule Nigeria? "God forbid, can Buhari and his APC cabals that are not truthful about their existence as human beings be trusted to be truthful to Nigerians if they take over power?" https://punch.cdn.ng/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/Jonathan-and-John-Kerry-360x227.jpg President Goodluck Jonathan (right) receiving United States Secretary of State, John Kerry, in Lagos... on Sunday The United States has advised Nigeria against postponing the general elections scheduled for next month. The US Secretary of State, Mr. John Kerry, gave the advice after he met the candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party, President Goodluck Jonathan and All Progressives Congress Maj. Gen. Muhamadu Buhari (retd.) in Lagos on Sunday. Kerry said that the US would deny entry visa to any Nigerian politician responsible for fomenting violence during the February elections. He urged the Federal Government not to postpone the elections as being canvassed by the National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd.). The secretary of state said, “Given the stakes, it’s absolutely critical that these elections are conducted peacefully.” Kerry was in Nigeria to urge the political class to respect the outcome of the February 14 presidential election. He explained that Washington was concerned that post-election violence could undermine the stability of Nigeria and hamper the fight against terrorism. It will be recalled that three days of rioting trailed the 2011 general elections which saw Buhari losing to Jonathan. Kerry said, “Nobody gains by violence, nobody gains by turning a political disagreement into a killing spree … The proof will be in the actions that are taken in the course of the election and afterwards. , “Anyone who participates in, plans or calls for violence against the civilian population must be held accountable, including by ineligibility for an American visa. Perpetrators of such violence would not be welcome in the US.” In an apparent response to Dasuki’s call, Kerry said, “It is imperative that Nigeria holds its elections on time.” Dasuki had in London last week called for the postponement of the elections to allow the Independent National Electoral Commission distribute more Permanent Voter Cards to Nigerians. An unconfirmed source said Kerry also spoke with the INEC Chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega, on the telephone. He was said to have urged Jega to ensure that the polls, which would determine how the US relates to Nigeria in future, were credible. Kerry also said that the US remained committed to helping Nigeria fight Boko Haram. http://www.punchng.com/news/us-to-nigeria-dont-postpone-elections/ |
https://punch.cdn.ng/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/Goodluck-Jonathan-360x225.jpg President Goodluck Jonathan on Sunday assured all stakeholders including the United States of America that the May 29 handover date was sacrosanct. He gave the assurance amidst calls by some individuals including the National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd.), for the postponement of the February general elections. According to a statement released by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati, the President gave the assurance during a closed-door meeting he had with the United States Secretary of State, Mr. John Kerry, at the State House, Marina. The statement was signed personally by the President. He said he had what he called “a candid and constructive discussion” about a broad range of issues with his guest. He said he emphasised to Kerry that he was deeply committed to ensuring that the elections were free, fair and credible. He added that he also promised his guest that his government would provide all resources required by the Independent National Electoral Commission to conduct hitch-free elections. Jonathan said, “I emphasised to Secretary Kerry that I am deeply committed to ensuring that our forthcoming election is free, fair, and credible. “It is especially critical that all political parties abide by the Abuja Accord, which commits each to non-violence before, during, and after the election. “I made it absolutely clear that the May 29th handover date is sacrosanct. “In addition, the government will provide all resources that are required by the Independent National Electoral Commission to ensure that the election goes smoothly. “I also emphasised that INEC is an independent body, which makes its own decisions without any interference from the government.” The President said he was grateful to the US for standing with Nigeria and its people in the nation’s fight against Boko Haram. He said he reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to working together with the US to put an end to global terrorism and particularly Boko Haram. He promised that Nigeria would also work to deepen and consolidate its bilateral relationship with the US. The President described Nigeria as a vibrant democracy and the largest trading partner of the US in Africa with over $18bn in bilateral trade. He noted that the two countries and peoples shared a mutual admiration for one another and a deep commitment to freedom, democracy, and human rights. This, he explained, was why the two countries were jointly engaged in a struggle against “a common enemy that promotes terror, fear, division, and violates human rights, most especially of women and girls, with complete impunity.” The President added, “Winning the fight against Boko Haram in Nigeria and West Africa is absolutely essential to beat back the tide of religious extremism around the world. “Our security forces have been working tirelessly and courageously to achieve this goal. “I reaffirmed for Secretary Kerry that Nigeria is strongly committed to building the multinational task force to fight Boko Haram in partnership with Cameroon, Chad, Niger and Benin Republic under the auspices of the Lake Chad Basin Commission. “Indeed, I called publicly for such a regional approach at the African leaders’ summit in Paris in May 2014 and more recently in multilateral meetings. “We are pleased that the international community is now strongly united behind this initiative and agree that its success is critical. “It is equally important that the multinational force receives the significant support that is required to address the threat through our global partners. “The United States, more than any other country in the world, has the most experience fighting armed insurgencies. “And having suffered the devastating attacks of 9/11, its people also understand the insecurity and fear that is the reality for the vast majority of peaceful, tolerant Muslims and Christians in north eastern Nigeria.” http://www.punchng.com/news/may-29-handover-date-sacrosanct-jonathan-tells-us/ |

https://sunnewsonline.com/new/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/Muhammadu_buhari.jpg The Minister of Defence, General Aliyu Gusau, another schoolmate of General Muhammadu Buhari has confirmed that the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress in forthcoming February 14 election actually sat for and passed Cambridge/ WASC examination in 1961. Gusau gave this affirmation in an interview he granted to an online medium, Greenbarge Reporters.com. He said: “You know that I’m not a politician but the truth needs to be told that I have known Buhari since 1960. He passed through the school that I also attended. He sat for his Cambridge/ WASC examination and came out with Division 2. He then joined the Army, rose to become Major General and Head of State.” The Defence Minister spoke in response to the dust raised by the initial inability of Buhari to present his school certificate to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, thereby setting off a firestorm of disapproving comments from a broad spectrum of Nigerians, even as many others stoutly rose to his defence over the matter. Gusau wondered why the old students association of the school, had not promptly risen to defend Buhari over the allegations. “We had just formed an association of old students of Katsina Provincial School, right from when it was a Middle School till date. And His Royal Highness, the Emir of Katsina, who is an ex-student of the school, invited some of us as the representatives of different sets, to his palace and we decided to even form a secretariat. I thought that the secretariat of our association should have clarified the status of Buhari’s certificates long before it took this dimension, Gusau said.” He recalled that he met General Buhari in the Katsina Provincial Secondary School when he was enrolled into the School in January 1960, the year Nigeria gained Independence. “General Buhari, at that time was in form five. I stayed two years with General Buhari at the school. They passed out in 1961 and we passed out in 1964. Buhari had leadership qualities since secondary school; in form five, he was a House Prefect. “Their set went up to form six but we were the first set that finished school at form five. Normally, out of those in form five, the school authorities used to pick House Prefects and when they get to form six, House Captains were chosen from those who were House Prefects. In Buhari’s case, he was a House Prefect in 1960 when we joined. By 1961, when he was in form six, he was chosen to be the Head Boy of the School. “There were four Houses during our time in the school; Magaji House, Kaura House, Alkali House and Durbi House. Buhari was the House Prefect of Magaji House in 1960, Justice Umaru Abdullahi was the House Prefect of Alkali House, the late Mamman A Zango, who became a policeman, was House Prefect of Kaura House while the late General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua was House Prefect of Durbi House. By 1961, all of them became the House Captains of their respective Houses but Buhari became the Head Boy.” http://sunnewsonline.com/new/?p=101751 |
