PoliticsTinubu Receives Okun Leaders, Promises To Address Marginalisation Claims by Simongm(op): 8:07pm On Aug 04, 2023
President Bola Tinubu on Thursday promised to look into the Okun peoples’ complaints of marginalisation in terms of power rotation and constitutional provisions to guarantee equal rights for all Senatorial Districts
in Kogi state.
This formed part of the discussions when Tinubu received the leaders of the Okun Development Association, led by Professor Micheal Ikupolati, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
“When you talk about domination, I’ll have to dig deeper into the issues. Yes, the question of rotation was agreed upon by Prince Audu and some other leaders, but death didn’t allow him. God Almighty knows the
reasons and we cannot question him,” the President told the leaders, referring to an agreement on power rotation made by the late Abubakar Audu.
Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, revealed this in a statement he signed on Thursday titled ‘President Tinubu urges peace and unity among Okun people ahead of Kogi elections.’
The Nigerian leader assured them of his commitment to look into their concerns regarding marginalisation and the need for fair representation in the governance of their state ahead of the November 11 governorship
election.
Responding to their appeal, the President told the delegation: “Democracy is about horse trading, numbers, conflicts, and conflict resolution. I appreciate your leadership and your position.
“One of your sons, James Faleke, has worked very closely with me and I know about the issue when the late Prince Audu was alive. But that was the way of God Almighty.

He passed on and the arrangement didn’t work and there was a judgment from the Supreme Court that was the last bus stop. That brought about the present government in the State, which is also a member of our
party.”
On power rotation and constitutional provisions to guarantee equal rights for all Senatorial Districts, the President said he would thoroughly examine the matter of fair representation they brought to his attention.

He recalled the agreement on power rotation made by Audu and other leaders but acknowledged that unforeseen events can impact such arrangements.
President Tinubu assured the group that having listened carefully to all their concerns on issues surrounding the elections in November, “he would look into the issues very carefully to ensure fairness, justice, and
equity but democracy is still a game of numbers.”
In the meantime, he called on the people of Kogi West Senatorial District to maintain peace and unity ahead of the elections in the State. He also urged them to extend love to one another, be patient and show
solidarity with other members of the Senatorial districts in the State.
Earlier, the delegation had expressed their unwavering support for the Tinubu administration and requested the President’s backing for Kogi West Senatorial District to have an opportunity to produce the next
Governor of the state.
They stressed that this would be the first time the district will have a chance to produce a governor in 27 years since the state’s creation in 1991.

Prof. Ikupolati had appealed to the President to intervene by directing security agencies to ensure a fair and peaceful election process during the elections.
Furthermore, the group requested the enforcement of the use of the Biometric Voter Authentication System in the upcoming election in Kogi State.
The Kogi West Senatorial District Leader of Thought highlighted that their appeal for a power shift to the district reflects the region’s historical support for other districts in the past.

PoliticsKogi West Deserves To Produce Next Governor -- Hon. Faleke by Simongm(op):
The lawmaker representing Ikeja Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, James Faleke, has appealed to Governor Yahaya Bello to allow Kogi West to produce his successor ahead of November 22 governorship election.

Faleke, who is the Chairman of the House Committee on Finance and Secretary for the APC Presidential Campaign Council, made the appeal in a statement issued in Abuja on Sunday.

He stressed that zoning the ticket to Kogi West would give the people a sense of belonging for equity’s sake.

The race to replace Bello gathered momentum in January when his Chief of Staff, Abdulkareem Asuku; Auditor General, Ahmed Ododo and Commissioner for Local Government and chieftaincy affairs, Salami Ozigi-Deedat paid N50m to pick up their nomination and expression of interest
forms at the APC national secretariat in Abuja
.
Other aspirants for the race include Faleke, Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the APC, Murtala Ajaka, and the senator representing Kogi West Senatorial District, Smart Adeyemi.
The latest move has got political pundits wondering if Bello would be willing to sacrifice his deputy governor, Edward Onoja, who has never hidden his intention to become the next leader for a candidate in Kogi West for the sake of equity.

But Faleke believed zoning the ticket to Kogi West is the only way to erase the memory of watching other regions occupy the governorship seat since the state was created in 1991.

According to him, the agitation for the region to become the next governor is gradually bringing aggrieved supporters of the APC together.

He added that the ruling party cannot afford to be in the opposition ahead of the November governorship poll.

The APC chieftain further explained that there are several states in Nigeria where governorship positions are rotated among senatorial districts without strains of bitterness, distrust or disunity.

He said, For equity, justice and fairness, it is only reasonable to lend my voice to the call by many that our great party, the All Progressives Congress should ensure the candidate for the governorship election emerged democratically from Kogi West. For a heterogeneous state such as Kogi, giving all
parts of the state a sense of belonging is key to peaceful coexistence among the several ethnic groups in the state.

“For more than 16 years, our brothers from the Eastern Senatorial District held sway in Lugard House through Late Prince Abubakar Audu, Alhaji Ibrahim Idris and Captain Idris Wada respectively. Kogi Central by the end of the tenure of Alhaji Yahaya Adoza Bello would have been in the saddle for 8 years, uninterrupted. While not discounting the right of those concerned to contest for any office, I believe that the time has come to be just and
fair to all.

“The clamour for power shift pre-2015 by Kogi West and Kogi Central was to correct the marginalization of the two districts in the governorship seat.

My position is not premised on any sense of entitlement but on the ideals of equity and fairness which late Abubakar Audu preached before his untimely death. The victory of our great party, APC in 2015 especially in Kogi West was the avowed commitment of Late Prince Abubakar Audu to ensure power shifts to other parts of the State.

“What should be of importance is our collective quest and preparedness to engender a united Kogi State for socio-political and economic prosperity.

The realization of a long-term dream of a state that is secure and prosperous with its diverse demography peacefully coexisting should be paramount in our minds. This can only happen if we collectively decide on fairness, equity and justice. The weird equation of 16:8:0 must be corrected and the right time to start is now with the coming election.

“As a party, we must go into the November 2023 elections with a common sense of purpose devoid of insensitive and unbridled ambition. I hereby appeal to my brother, His Excellency Yahaya Bello to recall the circumstances of his ascension to power and do all within his sense of reasoning as
the leader of the party in the state in ensuring he doesn’t toy with this rare opportunity to be on the positive side of history.

Just as the Progressive Governors of our party made history before the APC national convention, those names will remain written in gold.

PoliticsKOGI GUBER RACE: WHY I DECLINED TO PARTICIPATE- Hon. FALEKE by Simongm(op):
The Secretary of the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council(APCPCC) and Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Finance, Hon James Abiodun Faleke has declared that his decision not to participate in the Governorship race of Kogi State is borne out of his desire to subject his personal interest to national interest.
A group of Kogites from the three Senatorial Districts had put money together to purchase Governorship nomination form for Hon Faleke last month, urging him to throw his hat in the ring as the most acceptable candidate at the moment.
But in a chat with our correspondent yesterday, Faleke urged those that bought the form not to lose hope of a better Kogi without him, adding that he will still add value to the State in many other ways.
"I am of the opinion that my personal interest must not overide national interest. I alongside several other supporters worked hard for the election of our Leader, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu as President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. It would be out of place for me to jump out of the team to start pursuing personal goals. The people that bought form on my behalf meant well and I appreciate them and I am pleading with them and my other numerous supporters in Kogi State to see the larger picture and to note that I am still with them spirit, body and soul and will continue to contribute to the development of the state", he stated.
