In the final years before independence, another 1.5 million lives were lost in the brutal struggle for freedom. French historian Jacques Gorky estimated the total number of Muslims killed by France in Algeria from 1830 to 1962 at a staggering 10 million.

France's colonial reach extended far beyond Algeria. It occupied Tunisia for 75 years, Morocco for 44 years, and Mauritania for 60 years—each region bearing its own stories of oppression and resistance.

Even during Napoleon’s campaign in Egypt, French soldiers violated sacred spaces. They stormed mosques on horseback, raped free women in front of their families, drank alcohol within mosques, and converted places of worship into stables for their horses—demonstrating a shocking level of disregard for Islamic traditions and dignity.

Despite these atrocities, some still glorify French civilization while turning a blind eye to its brutal colonial past. It is both ironic and tragic that today, Islam is unjustly labeled as a religion of terrorism, and the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) is defamed—while the perpetrators of centuries of violence are praised for their so-called “civilization.”
