China has built the world’s fastest supercomputer using locally made microchips, a survey said Monday, the first time the country has taken the top spot without using US technology.

The Sunway TaihuLight machine is twice as fast as the previous number one, which was built in China with chips from US firm Intel, the Top500 survey of supercomputers said on its website http://www.top500.org

China also has more top-ranked supercomputers than the US for the first time since the survey began, with 167 compared to 165.

Located at China’s national supercomputer centre in the eastern city of Wuxi, the Sunway TaihuLight will be used for climate modelling and life science research.

Its performance ends “speculation that China would have to rely on Western technology to compete effectively in the upper echelons of supercomputing,” the survey’s website said.
The supercomputers on the Top500 list, which is produced twice a year, are rated based on speed in a benchmark test by experts from Germany and the US.

Of the top ten fastest computers, two are in China, with four in the US, the ranking said. Others are in Japan, Germany, Switzerland and Saudi Arabia.
China has poured money into big-ticket science and technology projects as it seeks to become a high-tech leader.

It plans to open the world’s largest radio telescope in southeastern China this year, state-media reported.

But despite some gains the country’s scientific output still lags behind, and its universities generally fare poorly in global rankings.

Tell any Nigerian ‘the Nigeria Police is your friend’ and you will be bombarded with sighs, hisses, anger, laughter and in some cases threats as they reminisce and reflect upon their past experiences with their ‘friends’. Almost everyone has one bad experience or the other to recount.
A few years ago a close friend of mine Chris went to buy tiles at Orile, and hired a bus to help transport it home. On their way back, the driver decided to carry some passengers, and my friend did not object.
To cut a long story short, one of the passengers who had fallen asleep woke up and on seeing the bus almost empty, dived out of the moving bus. Luckily he was not run over by oncoming vehicles but other drivers thought Chris and his driver were “one chance” armed robbers, so they were taken to the station.
The man who took a dive was brought in and via an interpreter (he’s Hausa) said he was not robbed but thought he was in danger, so he flew out of the bus. Cased closed right, but it's never that simple with our friends the Nigeria Police Force .
The officers in charge demanded that Chris pay N50,000 bail before he’s released and he refused. So he was charged to court and spent over 6 months in Ikoyi Prisons awaiting trial.
So I was not surprised when on Monday, June 13, 2016, I came across the story of Benue musician INAS (real name John Inas ) who was arrested on his way home from a video shoot. He was bailed with N20,000.00 and instructed to come the next day to collect his phone because the officer with it was not around.
Only for him to be be rearrested on false charges of murder and armed robbery simply because he persisted on collecting his phone. What I don't get is why was his phone taken out of the station in the first place? Items collected from those arrested are they not supposed to be registered, filed and kept in the evidence locker?
Then a few days later another story was circulated about a man who was robbed and went to the station to report the robbery but was told to pay N5,000.00 mobilisation fee. He then decided to write a statement instead but was requested to pay for the paper.
Sadly these are not isolated incidences but everyday occurrences which will continue to happen. The problem with the Nigeria Police Force is that they have refused to upgrade from the pre-colonial era of policing, when the British hired illiterates who could not challenge their authority. The officers are well educated while a lot of the recruits can hardly spell their names.
It's a dumping ground for frustrated individuals whose lack of credentials have blessed them a future so bleak, they decided to enroll for a job which pays cowries compared to the risk and stress involved with it. These ‘empowered frustrated’ people then take out their frustrations on innocent citizens but I do not blame them, I blame the incompetent bosses at the top who have refused to upgrade the recruitment requirements from the pre-colonial days, besides you only get what you pay. If the startup salary was reasonable, reasonable people will apply.
These are the men we entrust our lives with. We expect them to risk their lives for a pittance and act surprised when they take off of their uniforms quickly at the sound of anything that resembles a gunshot. Just tell one of them there are armed robbers operating down the street and watch his pot belly jiggle as he races in the opposite direction. The only time they’re useful is when they’re busy doing the job of Road Safety officials or setting up illegal road blocks.
More than one Inspector General of police has banned checkpoints, yet they keep springing up like weeds and will continue to do so. How do you expect these recruits to meet their needs with a salary of N9,019.42 monthly, if he’s not augmenting it by harassing innocent civilians on the street, it's just not feasible. It's also unreasonable for you to expect these same men to befriend their ‘food source’, it's like saying a street cat should stop eating rats, it'll starve to death.
The police is not my friend, at least not the ones I interact with. Friends are supposed to look out for each other. Friends do not stab each other in the back. What sort of friend oppresses his said friend simply because he wears a dirty black uniform that’s not been in water for days?
What sort of friend disappears when you need him the most? The police is my friend, never, I reject and rebuke it (as my dear mom would say).

As Nigerian households continue to rue the scarcity of the important food ingredient, Tomatoes , the battle that recently broke out between local producers of tomato paste and the importers of the product , over who controls the tomato paste market in the country has moved from the green Chambers of the National Assembly to the fields where the gladiators are digging in .
The Chairman of Erisco Foods Nigeria , Chief Eric Umeofia, who tweeked the national consciousness on the health hazards of the tomato pastes in the Nigerian markets , said on Thursday that the vast expanse of land he has acquired across many states in the northern part of the country underscores his undying determination to end the importation of the product and consequently create jobs for the Nigerian farmers whom he said he is engaging as tomato out-growers.
According to him , Erisco Foods is acquiring hectares of land in different parts of the country for tomato farming , saying the argument by importers that Nigerian tomatoes are not good enough for processing into tomato pastes cannot stand any practical test as he has already configured his machines and employed experts to start processing tomatoes from Nigerian farms. He stated that he is venturing into the sector to end the wastages in the subsector which is estimated to be about 60 per cent of the country ’s annual production capacity .
Chief Umeofia blamed the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control ( NAFDAC) for colluding with the importers, who , he claimed , are allegedly flooding the Nigerian market with poisonous tomato pastes made in China and India.
He further alleged that the imports also circumvent the checks the products were supposed to pass through abroad before export to Nigeria . “ NAFDAC knows about this and that is going on because of corruption .
The NAFDAC which Dora Akunyili left behind is not the NAFDAC we have today ,” he alleged. “ What the importers are selling to Nigerians is just starch and colouring . Six years ago when I joined the business, I started by importing concentrate and was packaging it , but I have stopped the importation of the concentrate and I now use locally produced tomatoes .
“ I told the other importers to start making effort to start manufacturing but they said it is not possible ” Sunday Telegraph notes that at the recent one -day Public Hearing organised by the joint House of Representative Committees on Health Services , Drug and Narcotics , Chief Umeofia had alleged that the importation of the tomatoe paste is taking jobs away from Nigerians to Chinese and Indians .
He suggested a ban on the importation of the product and the policy of backward integration for the product , so that the country would soon become not only self sufficient in the product , but also a net exporter of the product .
But the Legal Adviser of a group of 24 importers of tomato paste, under aegis of Association of Stakeholders in Edible and Consumer Products in Nigeria ( ASECPIN), Mr Ikenna Amechi dismissed the claim by Chief Umeofia, saying it is driven by selfish interest as against the national interest he is pretending to be what he is driving him. According to him , the Erisco Foods boss intends to get government to chase other importers out of the market for him and Dangote tomato industry to have a monopoly of the market.
He disclosed that the members of the association have submitted their products to the joint House of Reps investigating committee to conduct a laboratory test on them anywhere in the world , to find out if there is anything poisonous in the tomato-paste.
Amechi alleged that Chief Umeofia, who alleged that the tomato pastes imported from China and India is cancer causing , does not have tomato a farm in the country as he claims , even as he has continued to import tomato concentrate from the same China which he package into cans at his facility in Oregun , Lagos. “ The difference is that he imports in drums and we imports in cans .”
Amechi also said that Nigeria does not have the capacity to produce over 70 per cent of its tomato paste needs and therefore needs to continue to import until the country can produce enough to be self sufficient.
He added that Nigeria does not even have the species of tomatoes need for the production of the tomato paste because Nigerian tomato specie is 80 per cent water .
“ We are not against local production of the product , infact some of us have acquired large expanse of land to build factories, so we are canvassing a 10 -year programme for the country to develop the local industry , because the tomato specie for making the tomato paste will be adopted, then the country will move from seasonal farming of the tomatoes to irrigated farming for all-year -round availability for the factories,” he said . He pointed out that the Dangote factory opened recently in Kano has been closed down because there are no tomatoes to process.

The Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) in collaboration with Trail Trans Logistics Group of Companies in Russia, has concluded plans to formally launch an e-commerce platform that will boost the quantum of direct trade, both import and export, between Russia and Nigeria.
The official launch, according to LCCI, scheduled to hold Lagos, is expected to further boost the national economy.
Muda Yusuf, director-general of the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) said: “The RuNiTrade e-commerce platform is a welcome development, coming at a time when Nigeria seriously needs forex from export as a way of diversifying the economy, and strengthening the non-oil sector. The focus, here, with this launch, is to strengthen the bilateral trade relations between Russia and Nigeria, and boost the economic activities between the two countries.”
Yusuf further stated that, “The Launch will feature B2B interaction between a delegation of Russian businessmen and their Nigerian counterparts on business opportunities available to willing investors in international trade.
Also expected at the launch are: president, LCCI, Dr Nike Akande, deputy head of Mission, Trade and Economy, Embassy of Russia in Nigeria, Valery Shaposhnikov; president, Pskov Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Russia, Zubov Vladmir Anatolyvich and other notable dignitaries.”
Trail Trans Logistics, a Russian based group of companies and operators of the RuNiTrade e-commerce platform, noted that its partnership with LCCI is to add value to Nigeria’s international trade relations status and unravel the hidden treasures in doing business with Russia, as a big window to Europe.
