Nairaland / General / UN Warns World May Pay ‘terrible Price’ If It Fails Sudan by Slimcase11: 1:16pm On Jan 31, 2020
A top UN official has warned that the international community would “pay a terrible price” if it fails to help rebuild Sudan’s dilapidated economy as the African country transitions to civilian rule.

“The story of Sudan in the year 2020 is not the story of the previous government,” United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Administrator Achim Steiner told AFP in an interview during his visit to Sudan this week.

“It is the story in which waiting for too long to actually step in and support this (development) process may have a terrible price.”

More than a year after the start of a nationwide protest movement that led to the ouster of longtime ruler Omar al-Bashir last April, Sudan faces a series of challenges driven by an economic crisis.

Years of recession were a key trigger for the protest movement against Bashir’s 30-year-old autocratic regime...

Nairaland / General / Panic As Adamawa Governor Sacks 5,000 Workers by Slimcase11: 11:57am On Jan 31, 2020
Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State has approved the sacking of 5,000 workers employed by the previous All -Progressives Congress-led government of Jibril Bindow.

The salaries of the civil servants had been stopped last year over what the state government called “improper employment and transfer of service.”

The fate of the civil servants was finally sealed as the state executive council endorsed the report of a committee the government had asked to regularise employment and transfer of service in the state.

On Wednesday, the state’s commissioner of information and strategy, Umar Pella, announced their sack after a meeting of the state executive council at the Government House, Yola.

Mr Pella advised those employed between September 2018 and May 2019 to seek fresh employment, saying the government no longer recognise them as its employees.

Mr Pella said the report of the committee shows that there were irregularities in their employment process.
