Congrats Quoaran. Funding on the way bro!
Quoran:
I have been admitted to the University of Alabama for a PhD in Mechanical Engineering. Funding decisions will come up later. The Graduate school coordinator said I can also contact Professors for funding support. Two have already offered to apply for Fellowship on my behalf. I hope it turns out fine.

I also got Louisiana State University day before yesterday, official letter not yet out though without funding but I have been able to secure RA from a POI I mentioned in my SOP. Contacting him before applying worked.

You can also try Canada since some schools in Canada do not require GRE.
Just try and sell yourself to a supervisor who is willing to take you and you will be a step closer to being a postgraduate student in Canada.

I will advise you rewrite GRE because your score is relatively low compare to your CPGA.

Try and identify where you got it wrong and refire.

All the best.

You can peruse this @elevatedmind
smallsuper:
Quant Guide

Materials: Manhattan set of 8 strategy guides, Manhattan 5lb and GRE Official guide.

If you are a mathematics guru, you can skip 1 and 2.

1)I will advise you start with the 8 strategy guide, it might look simple however, the purpose of the using the book is to learn different strategies and tricks needed to ace the quant section so try and endure to finish it even if it seem boring. If you are solving any question and you noticed you have spent 1 minute and have not gotten the answer, it simply means you are not using the right strategy. Remember, GRE is not testing your mathematical prowess directly but to assess your smartness, accuracy, speed and efficiency. Take note of your weakness as you are progressing.

2) Afterwards, proceed to Manhattan 5lb. Don’t be daunted due to the size, it only contains 23 quant topics which you can finish in two weeks if you are going at a pace of two topics per day. Remember, it’s all about strategies. Watch out for your performance in your weakness noted in (1). You can also essay the advance quants questions in the book cheesy if you are targeting a perfect score and a 50% score implies you are good to go but it is not important.

3) I will highly suggest you take some practice tests e.g Power prep 1, Manhattan, Magoosh or Princeton.

4) The next step would be dependent on your weakness in the practice test. You should be able to deduce if you are lacking in some topics or your accuracy and/or speed is low.

a) If you are lacking in some topics, I will advise revising 8 strategy guides and solving questions from other mathematics prep materials like Princeton 1014 questions, Barron or Nova.

b) If your weakness is your low speed, I would suggest that you revised the 8 strategy guide because it simply means you lack strategies and tricks.

5) Wrap it up with the official guide. The chapter on mathematics review is still the best for revision. Don’t trivialize it.

6) Finish it up with Power prep 2

TIPS for acing quants

1. Be open-minded and don’t forget to insert these numbers: -1, -½, 0, ½, and 1 when solving quantitative comparison questions. There are some questions that would require you to insert a large positive or negative numbers however, you will be able to discern them with practice.

2. In your practice tests, I would advise you don’t review your answers and move to the next section even if you have some minutes left. Make it your habit and your accuracy will improve tremendously.

3. Before solving any question, the first step is to read the question and understand it, then take note of any constraint inherent in the question such as whether the parameter is an integer or not, positive or negative, whether the parameter is a square which might nullify any negative answer etc and lastly, write the parameter you are looking for in an equation form before solving to avoid error. For example, "if you are told to find how old shola would be in the next two years", you should probably write S+2 somewhere and put question mark in front of it before solving the question and after finding your S, you can then check back for the constraint and the expected answer. This tip is very helpful and would reduce error drastically.

4. The God factor.

Note: They are not sacrosanct, just my opinion.

Thanks @ reDazey. I have been looking for who to break the silence.

Let me share my little experience.

As a mechanical engineering post graduate applicant, my targeted score was 326 and above. I have been consistently knacking between 156-159 in Verbal with my Quants mostly above 167 in all my practice test. I decided to "gave" my first GRE as our Indian peeps normally say on the 11th of Aug, the exam was in the format VQVQV. After my A.W, I could not concentrate due to the discordant sounds of keyboard punching from every angle and couldn't even comprehend the SEs and TCs. I knew immediately that I had "entered it". I got 170Q (because I can solve mathematics under any condition), 150V and 3.5 AW.
I had mixed feelings because of my low verbal and A.W score and my perfect quant score and I decided to rewrite the exam after two months of contemplation.

I registered for another Gre in late October and sat for the exam on the 1st of December. Nothing changed in my preparation and I ended up using the same materials. The exam was in the format VQVQV, at the end of the exam, I had 167 Quants, 156V (Though I was expecting something higher) and 3.5 A.W( I didn't practice writing, I thought it was all about template but I was wrong). The seeming improvement in my verbal was a result of my decision to be among the last set of people that entered the exam hall to prevent the previous unpropitious experience. Technically, I didn't improve in any section because I know 156 was achievable in the first attempt if not for the inauspicious experience.

How I wish I knew this thread then and asked for advice from savants here. That's why it's good to speak up, However, I remain undaunted and had learned my lesson.

#Team 2018
Waiting for admission decision from Georgia Tech, University of Maryland College Park, Iowa State University, University of Tennesse Knoxville, Louisiana State University and Ohio University.

Based on understanding, They put more importance on B.Sc CGPA more than M.Sc, but having MSc. is an added advantage.

Secondly, Funding for management courses are not as common as STEM courses. But it is not impossible. It is about finding the right school for yourself.

Gbolly4unow:
Bro, you have done a very good job. For Phd Applicant, would they focus more on B.sc or Msc if one has M.sc. My B.Sc CGPA is 4.14/5.00 and M.sc is 3.8/5.0. Lets assume I have research experience. With good GRE, is it advisable to apply to top notch Institutions?

Also, I studied management course, Is full funding really sure like that unlike STEM?

Just thought sending it here. Someone might be enlightened.

https://www.quora.com/What-does-the-admissions-committee-process-for-graduate-school-look-like-Do-you-sit-in-a-room-and-all-discuss-the-same-candidate-at-the-same-time-or-is-it-more-of-an-individual-process-with-opinions-aggregated-at-the-end/answer/James-Leland-Harp

A2A. First this question is about graduate schools that have departments, not about business school, law school or medical schools. These professional programs do consider standardized test scores such as GMAT, GRE, LSAT, or MCAT. However, standardized test scores alone will not get you admitted to any graduate program.

I can only answer this question based on my experiences as a professor who served on a number of admission committees and as a director of a graduate program who actually made the admission policy in conjunction with the full professors of the department. Other admission committees may have a totally different process.

The graduate schools that I have experience with required a minimum of 3.0 on a 4 scale for a four-yearbachelor's degree. Both the cumulative GPA and degree are on your transcripts. The graduate school may require GRE that have no minimum scores. They also required TOEFL that does have a minimum for international students who native language is not English. If an applicant does not meet the graduate school requirements, the department, not only does not see the application, they cannot even ask for an exception.

The department sorts the applications based on research interests as stated in the SOP and then forwards these applications to the respective research groups. The decision of who is admitted and who is not is made at the research group level which is why I alway recommend that all applicants target a research group telling them what they bring to the table. Those applicants who research interests are unclear, the admission committee has to make a judgment call to see which research group should make the evaluation. These student are at a disadvantage especially if the judgment call is wrong. The goal is to get the best students as possible.

Each research group subjectively evaluates the SOP supported by LORs to determine research potential, the ability to work at the research level. Each research group has a number of openings. The research group decides who is accepted, waitlisted, or rejected. They also say which applicants should get research group funding using RAs. The director of the graduate program determines which accepted applicants should get department funding usually TAs, and he or she then forwards these decisions to the dean of admissions who sends out letters accordingly. When an accepted student declines an admission offer, the next person on the group waitlist is given an offer.

Some research groups may still have openings. If this is case, the department may contacts the applicant who is on the wait list if he or she will consider at different research interest. However, I must point out the students can change research interested at any time; however, RAs are a yearly contact which means a student with an RA may not have funding in his or her new area of interest. This ability to change research groups is why there is funding available all year round.

Most departments have a limit, a quota, on how many students can be in the department, so for a student to be admitted, an enroll student must leave. What this means it is unclear how many students on the wait list will be admitted or at what time they are admitted. (I have personally given an offer with funding one week before classes started.)

If you are applying to a PhD program, you must demonstrate your potential to do original research which is why I always recommend writing a thesis (senior or master’s). You would given an executive summary and cite any published papers (preferably in refereed journals) in your SOP. The reason I say this is because you are being subjectively compared to the other applicants who most likely have demonstrated the ability to do (original) research.

There is no probability to this process because the SOP supported by LORs are subjectively evaluated and compared to the other applicants as I have previously stated. When you are being subjectively evaluated, the evaluation depends on the people making them. Anyone out side of the admission committee and the research groups would not know the criteria for their decisions. Another factor that is also unknown is the number of openings for a particular research group. The percentage for a research group that has no student openings is 0.

Finally my post How to improve my chances to be admitted into a top University that everyone underthe sun wants in gives you some insight as to what I and my other colleagues look for in an application. If you are applying to a master’s, see my answer to Do you need research experience toget into a top CS masters program?

Bottom line: Faculty members view applicants differently. They are looking for the best match for their particular research interests, which is why applicants should be familiar with who is doing what and where.

Your recommender should not necessarily be a professor, any Phd holder is good to go. As said by one of the bosses on this thread, "since they might not know them then, you should go for quality and not title".

Oluwaseun67:
pls,i also want to ask,is it a must for the LOR's to come from professors? the H.O.D of my electrical/electronics department is a Phd Holder,do they disregard LOR from Phd Holders, must it be from a prof?

Do not be evasive. Tell us your stat, that might inspire someone here.

PHUMEELAYO:
I can't really comment on the specifics of the test, there's a voice prompt at the beginning where you have to swear an oath not to divulge any info about the nature of the test.

Well the verbal section wasn't easy at all but English has always been a strong point for me (got a 9 on my IELTS). I attended to the reasoning questions and then the reading comprehension. The passages were longer and more complex than I expected for just a few questions.

I was in luck with the Quant section but time wasn't on anyone's side. The main strategy I used was answering the easy questions within the first 10mins, just skipping all the hard ones and using the remainder time to tackle them.

I noticed the group is dying already because its purpose has been defeated. Most eminent contributors like scholastica 16 and others are being reticent because of the evasiveness and covertness of we the new set. If I have not forgotten, people would post test experiences, results and even advice prospective test takers, an habit that is now moribund. I will suggest "Pming" should stop for now or else if only the need calls for it and all information should be post directly on the thread. I will also suggest that everyone should post their stats so as to know who to direct a particular question to, if you support this motion, like this post and if you do not, just click on share.
