How did the caringly Christian saint, good Bishop Nicholas, become a roly-poly red-suited American symbol for merry vacation festivity and financial activity? annals notifies the tale. The first Europeans to arrive in the New World conveyed St. Nicholas. Vikings dedicated their cathedral to him in Greenland. On his first voyage, Columbus entitled a Haitian dock for St. Nicholas on December 6, 1492. In Florida, Spaniards entitled an early settlement St. Nicholas Ferry, now renowned as Jacksonville. although, St. Nicholas had a tough time throughout the 16th century Protestant Reformation which took a dim outlook of saints. Even though both reformers and counter-reformers endeavoured to mark out St. Nicholas-related culture, they had very little long-term achievement except in England where the religious folk customs were lastingly changed. (It is ironic that fervent Puritan Christians began what turned into a tendency to a more secular Christmas observance.) Because the widespread people so loved St. Nicholas, he survived on the European countries as people proceeded to place nuts, apples, and sweets in footwear left adjacent beds, on windowsills, or before the hearth. The first Colonists, primarily Puritans and other Protestant reformers, did not convey Nicholas customs to the New World. What about the Dutch? Although it is nearly unanimously accepted that the Dutch conveyed St. Nicholas to New Amsterdam, scholars find scant evidence of such customs in Dutch New Netherland. Colonial Germans in Pennsylvania kept the feast of St. Nicholas, and some later accounts have St. Nicholas visiting New York Dutch on New Years' Eve, thus taking up the English made-to-order (New Year gift-giving had become the English custom in 1558, supplanting Nicholas, and this English made-to-order lasted in New York until 1847). In 1773 New York non-Dutch patriots formed the Sons of St. Nicholas, mainly as a non-British emblem to counter the English St. George societies, rather than to respect St. Nicholas. This humanity was similar to the children of St. Tammany in Philadelphia. Not exactly St. Nicholas, the children's gift-giver.After the American transformation, New Yorkers remembered with dignity their colony's nearly-forgotten Dutch origins. John Pintard, the influential patriot and antiquarian who founded the New York chronicled Society in 1804, encouraged St. Nicholas as patron saint of both society and town. In January 1809, Washington Irving connected the humanity and on St. Nicholas Day that same year, he released the satirical fiction, Knickerbocker's History of New York, with many references to a jolly St. Nicholas character. This was not the saintly bishop, rather an elfin Dutch burgher with a mud pipe. These charming air travel of imagination are the source of the New Amsterdam St. Nicholas legends: that the first Dutch emigrant ship had a figurehead of St. Nicholas: that St. Nicholas Day was observed in the colony; that the first place of worship was dedicated to him; and that St. Nicholas comes down chimneys to convey gifts. Irving's work was regarded as the "first prominent work of imagination in the New World." The New York Historical humanity held its first St. Nicholas celebration evening meal on December 6, 1810. John Pintard requested creative person Alexander Anderson to conceive the first American image of Nicholas for the event. Nicholas was shown in a gift-giving function with children's delicacies in stockings hanging at a fireplace. The accompanying verse ends, "Saint Nicholas, my dear good friend! To serve you ever was my end, If you will, now, me something give, I'll serve you ever while I live." The 19th years was a time of cultural transition. New York writers, and others, wanted to domesticate the Christmas holiday. After Puritans and other Calvinists had eradicated Christmas as a holy time of the year, popular commemorations became riotous, boasting drunken men and public disorder. Christmas of vintage was not the images we envisage of families accumulated cozily round hearth and tree swapping attractive gifts and vocalising carols while grinning benevolently at young kids. Rather, it was characterized by raucous, drunken mobs roaming streets, impairing house, intimidating and scary the upper classes. The vacation season, approaching after harvest when work was eased and more leisure likely, was a time when employees and servants took the top hand, demanding largess and more. Through the first half of the 19th century, Presbyterians, Baptists, Quakers and other Protestants proceeded to regard December 25th as a day without devout implication, a day for usual enterprise. This was not a neutral stance, rather Christmas observance was seen as inconsistent with gospel adoration. Industrialists were joyous to reduce employees' leisure time and allowed many less vacations than existed in Europe. She's close with Walker's daughter, Meadow. Pilchard-Gosnell allegedly took on a stepmother role to Walker's little young female with Rebecca McBrain, even though they only had an eight year age difference between them—and she allegedly broke the report of Walker's death to the teen. Walker's close ally, Jim Torp, said Pilchard-Gosnell collapsed upon hearing the news, but dragged herself simultaneously to help Meadow. "I accept as true she is the one who notified Meadow about what occurred, and when she discovered out she was hysterical and crying," Torp said. "It was just so sad. I tried to do everything I could to help them. Paul's woman companion then took Meadow and motored her dwelling. I don't understand if they motored to crash location. I just understand they were in so much anguish." She was just Walker's type. Pilchard-Gosnell was hardly ever dotted with makeup on, which is the kind of girl Walker says he loves. Mikhail Kalashnikov will go down in history as the creator of the world's most famous rifle, the AK-47, hailed by enthusiasts for its durability and lightweight firepower. Mikhail Kalashnikov said he wishes he had paid more attention to his garden instead. Mr Kalashnikov, said if he had his time again he would try to design something useful rather than destructive - preferably a lawnmower. "I'm proud of my invention, but I'm sad that it is used by terrorists," he said on a visit to Germany, adding: "I would prefer to have invented a machine that people could use and that would help farmers with their work - for example a lawnmower." The former Red Army officer was opening an AK-47 exhibition in a weapons museum in Suhl, eastern Germany. His comment, made to the German tabloid Bild, was reminiscent of Albert Einstein's remark reflecting on his role in the development of the atom bomb: "If only I had known, I should have become a watchmaker." Mr Kalashnikov, a peasant's son who lives in Siberia, was quick to stress he has made not a kopek from his rifle, 100m of which have been sold since production began in 1947. "The state took everything for it," he said. He said the Germans were indirectly responsible for the design, which was adopted by the Russian army in 1949. In 1941 a fellow soldier asked him: "Why do our soldiers have only one rifle between three men, while the Germans have automatics?" "So I invented an automatic," he said. "I'm proud of my invention, but I'm sad that it is used by terrorists ... I would prefer to have invented a machine that people could use and that would help farmers with their work — for example a lawn mower." "Blame the Nazi Germans for making me become a gun designer ... I always wanted to construct agriculture machinery. ""I created a weapon to defend the borders of my motherland. It's not my fault that it's being used where it shouldn't be. The politicians are more to blame for this." "When a young man, I read somewhere the following: God the Almighty said, 'All that is too complex is unnecessary, and it is simple that is needed' ... So this has been my lifetime motto – I have been creating weapons to defend the borders of my fatherland, to be simple and reliable Here are medals he won Medals Medal "Hammer and Sickle" (1958,1976) Medal "For Victory over Germany in the Great Patriotic War of 1941–1945" Medal "Twenty Years of Victory in the Great Patriotic War 1941–1945" Medal "In commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the birth of Vladimir Ilyich Lenin" Jubilee Medal "Thirty Years of Victory in the Great Patriotic War 1941–1945" Jubilee Medal "Forty Years of Victory in the Great Patriotic War 1941–1945" Medal "For Distinction in Guarding the State Border of the USSR" Medal "Veteran of Labor" on behalf of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR Jubilee Medal "30 years of the Soviet Army and Navy" Jubilee Medal "40 years of the Armed Forces of the USSR" Jubilee Medal "50 Years of the Armed Forces of the USSR" Jubilee Medal "60 Years of the Armed Forces of the USSR" Jubilee Medal "70 years of the Armed Forces of the USSR" Medal "In Commemoration of the 800th anniversary of Moscow" SOURCE http:///SgkqT |

We're constantly being told of the (debatable) importance of using a task manager to maximise Android battery life, and if you want to go down that route you're welcome. However, when killing all your tasks to save battery life, remember that your alarm clock is a task in itself - kill that and you'll wake up in a panic at 10.15am tomorrow morning. 5. Fancy a quick Home screen shortcut to your starred favourite contacts? Long-press the Home screen and make it so. 6. Rename Android folders And, once you've done that, to customise things to perfection it's possible to rename folders. Simply open the folder, then long-press on its name in the top bar to bring up the Top Secret renaming field. Rename folders 7. Check the date Possibly one of the tiniest undocumented features is the date-checking facility. Press the Notification bar at the top left of the screen. It tells you what the date is. Go on, try it. It will. 8. Mount your SD card Also accessed via the Notifications field is the "Mount" option. Many an Android newcomer has failed at this hurdle, as mounting your phone's SD card is an awkward step that needs to be taken before it'll appear as an external drive for data copying. Plug it in, mount it, then copy. 9. Set up your keyboard launch shortcuts One of the reasons many people still love their QWERTY keyboards is Google's inclusion of the reliable old keyboard shortcut system in Android. The phone has a completely customisable collection of app launcher shortcuts, which are found under Settings > Applications > Quick Launch. Quick launch 10. Download more Android live wallpapers One thing that makes Android 2.1 a little more swish and exciting than the rather dull earlier versions is its support for Live Wallpapers - the animating image format that brings your Home screen to life. 1. His parents didn't name him Nelson Upon his birth on July 18, 1918, he was named Rolihlahla Dalibhunga Mandela. He attended primary school in Qunu where his teacher gave him the name Nelson, in accordance with the tradition of giving “Christian” names to students.2. He was a poor student Mandela was expelled from the University College of Fort Hare for his participation in a student protest. He completed his BA through the University of South Africa before attending the University of theWitwatersrand for his law degree. By his own admission, he was not a very good student and left in 1948 without graduating; he also was unable to complete a law degree that he started at the University of London. It wasn’t until his last months in prison that he obtained his undergraduate law degree. He now has more than 50 honorary degrees from international universities. 3. He traveled under an alias In 1962, he took on the alias David Motsamayi and secretly left South Africa for other parts of Africa and England to rally support for the liberation movement and the African National Congress (ANC); he received military training in Morocco and Ethiopia. 4. He was a master of disguise Forced to go underground to evade the police, Mandela disguised himself as a chauffeur, a chef and a garden boy. “I would wear the blue overalls of the fieldworker and often wore round, rimless glasses known as Mazzawati teaglasses. I had a car and I wore a chauffeur's cap with my overalls. The pose of chauffeur was convenient because I could travel under the pretext of driving my master's car,” he wrote in his autobiography, " Long Walk to Freedom." 5. Some of his most famous words were spoken in court In 1963, Mandela and nine others went on trial for sabotage in what became known as the Rivonia Trial, when he delivered his famous speechin which he concluded, “During my lifetime I have dedicated myself to this struggle of the African people. I have fought against white domination, and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities. It is an ideal which I hope to live for and to achieve. But if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die.” Facing the death penalty, they were convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment. 6. His principles were more important than freedom He spent 27 years in prison until his release in 1990, nine days after the unbanning of the ANC. Throughout his imprisonment he had rejected at least three conditional offers of release. 7. He was deluged with ticker tape In 1990, he embarked on a world tour, visiting British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, the U.S. Congress, and U.S. President George H.W. Bush. An estimated 400,000 attended a ticker tape parade through the canyons of Wall Street in his honor. 8. He loves tripe Umleqwa (farm chicken), ulusu ( tripe), and amasi (sour milk) are among his favorite foods. His chef since 1992, Xoliswa Ndoyiya, published a cookbookwith his favorite recipes. 9. He was a concert promoter Mandela was the driving force behind the 2003 AIDS awareness event in Cape Town called the 46664 Concert. The huge event included performances by Beyonce, Peter Gabriel, Bono, Bob Geldof and many more. The name of the concert references Mandela’s prison number. 10. His honors have no limits Mandela has received more than 695 awards, including the Nobel Peace Prize and the U.S. Congressional Medal. In addition to his honorary degrees, he has also been bestowed with honorary citizenships, organization memberships, and a large number of streets, buildings, schools and other various things have been named for him— and his influence can even be seen in Hollywood. In "The Cosby Show," the grandchildren of Cliff and Clair Huxtable, Winnie and Nelson Tibideau, were named after Mandela and his former wife. Women have a thing for doctors. This is because doctors combine alpha and beta qualities. Alpha(dominant, assertive, bad boy) All day long, doctors tell people what to do. They issue commands. There’s nothing they haven’t seen before, so they rarely get ruffled – they act like nothing is a big deal because most of the time, it’s not. You think that rubs off in their daily demeanor in other aspects of life? You better believe it — calm and confident assertiveness is a huge turn-on. Doctors also wear uniforms. Uniforms are a sign of authority. Authority is a turn-on. Beta(submissive, nurturing, nice guy) Doctors take care of sick people. They nurture. When bad things happen, they are there for you. They provide safety and comfort. They are reliable and responsible. A man seeking a lifelong marriage with lots of really hot sex should cultivate a combination of alpha and beta qualities. If you are too alpha, work on your bedside manner (no, the other bedside manner). If you are too beta, start writing prescriptions:Take two and call me in the morning. The same principles explain the appeal of policemen and firefighters. |
Lawyering, despite the efforts of those who write the ethics rules, has a conflict of interestbuilt in: what’s good for the client is often the exact opposite of what’s good for the lawyer. And lawyers, being mere mortals, are morally fallible, and they know it. They have to get past that knowledge if they are going to at least sometimes choose to do what’s best for themselves instead of what’s best for the client. To cope with making that choice, they lie to themselves in order to believe that what’s good for themselvesis in fact what’s best for the client. Straight cash, homie Getting paidis the most obvious example. Despite the ethics rules, and regardless of fee structure, most lawyers get paid to do stuff, and the more stuff they do, the more money they make. That leads to the temptation to lead the client to believe that more stuff is needed than really is needed. Contingency fee cases don’t solve the problem, although lots of attorney advertising suggests that they do. A lawyer looking for a big score might go to trial when a settlement was a better idea. Or vice versa. Lots of lawyers, driven by their own best interests, are enablers for their clients’ worst instincts. This is particularly true in family court. A lawyer is “doing what the client wants” while draining the client’s bank account, and if there are children, harming them too. Please add your own view. Why lawyers lie |
