PoliticsRe: Lagos, Historically Benin And Culturally Awori. by Softmirror: 2:31pm On Sep 10, 2025

Having a deep understanding of Lagos's history, I recall the characteristics of true Lagosians from my childhood. They were known for their education, sophistication, and civility. Visiting a typical Lagosian household provided valuable lessons in etiquette. Children from affluent families attended institutions like Kings College and St. Gregory's, while others went to schools such as CMS. Being a Lagosian meant embodying refined behavior, speech, and appearance. True Lagosians were not involved in thuggery; instead, they enjoyed social gatherings with like-minded individuals and expatriates, treating everyone with respect regardless of their social standing. I remember accompanying friends to the Ikoyi Club or Lagos Country Club in Ikeja, observing Lagosians interacting, which created an atmosphere reminiscent of London.
How many times is this particular comment being repeated like an anthem on Nairaland?! Lol 😂.
PoliticsRe: Lagos, Historically Benin And Culturally Awori. by Softmirror: 2:27pm On Sep 10, 2025
omoredia:
When we weigh the historical evidence (oral tradition + documented history + linguistics), the Benin/Edo origin of “Eko” as a “war camp” is considered stronger than the Awori/Yoruba “camp/settlement” version.

Here’s why:

---

1. Early Control of Lagos (15th–16th century)

Historical records show that the Benin Kingdom expanded westward during the reign of Oba Orhogbua (mid-1500s).

Benin warriors established a military outpost on Lagos Island to control trade routes and collect tribute.

The Oba of Benin appointed a military administrator (called an “Eletu Odibo”) to govern the area.

This aligns with the interpretation of Eko as a “war camp” in Edo.

---

2. Oral History & Naming

Lagos oral tradition (especially from Benin sources) consistently states that the Oba of Benin named the settlement Eko when it became a military camp.

The Yoruba Awori were already living there, but the name “Eko” was imposed through conquest and administration, making it a political name, not just a descriptive one.

---

3. Linguistic Strength

In Edo (Bini), Eko indeed directly translates to “camp” or “encampment,” often military in sense.

In Yoruba, ẹ̀kọ́ has meanings like to gather, to learn, or to be trained (also the word for pap/fermented maize meal). But the usage of Eko to mean “settlement” is less direct and less common.

This makes the Edo origin linguistically tighter.

---

4. European Accounts

Early Portuguese records from the 15th–16th centuries confirm that the Benin Kingdom was administering Lagos (Eko) before colonial Lagos emerged.

They describe Lagos Island as a tributary state of Benin, not Awori, in terms of political control.

---

Conclusion

✅ The Benin (Edo) origin of Eko as “war camp” is better supported by historical, political, and linguistic evidence.
⚖️ The Awori/Yoruba origin reflects the fact that they were the indigenous settlers, but their explanation of Eko as “settlement” is more cultural than historical.

So, historically: “Eko” = war camp (Benin Edo origin).
Culturally: Yoruba still claim it as “our settlement.”.

So anybody that is not Benin and to a lesser extent Awori has no historical or cultural claim to Lagos.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Try again. Lol . 😁😁

And the government keeps talking propaganda.
The earlier we brave up against banditry and terrorism, the better.
It's been handled with kid gloves for now.
Over coming banditry is more of the will of the people. Until the day the people rise to challenge banditry, that is the day we will find a solution. They live within the people, the feel accepted by them even though the are still being killed by same bandits who the share affinities.

NA SALARY ISSUE CAUSE AM! 🤣🤣🤣

By VINCENT UJUMADU
AWKA—DOCTORS in the employ of Anambra State government yesterday called off their 13 months old strike.

The action was suspended when it apparently became obvious that the state government was not ready to shift ground on the 60 percent salary increase it offered the doctors when the strike began last year.

The Medical Association, NMA, in the state, headed by Dr. Emmanuel Ekwesianya and the state government team, headed by Secretary to the State Government, Chief Paul Odenigbo, signed the agreement in Awka calling off the strike.

The doctors embarked on the strike over the state government’s alleged refusal to implement the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure, CONMESS, approved for doctors working in government-owned hospitals in the country.

Ekwesianya said despite efforts to make government shift ground, it remained rigid on the 60 percent increase it offered to pay the doctors when negotiations began.

He said the doctors decided to call off the strike in the interest of the patients, adding that it was not good for the doctors to remain as rigid as government on the issue as people were suffering.

We are serving the people and not government and we observe that it is the people that have continued to suffer over the past 13 months the doctors have been on strike,” he said.

The NMA chairman explained that a technical committee, headed by Professor O.O, Mbonu, had been set up to work out ways of smooth practice in the hospitals and urged all the striking doctors to go back to work immediately.

Vanguard recalls that negotiations between the doctors and government broke down as the two parties could not agree on the issue.

While government offered to pay 60 percent increase, in view of what it attributed to its poor resources, the NMA insisted that the state was capable of paying the new pay structure

Igbos are not alien to social media. Nnamdi Kanu is a good example. He represents Igbos and have said so much on social media on behalf of Igbos. Simone Ekpa is another.

What Israel has been doing and is still doing is the very same that the United States of America does. Very recently, the United States launched an aggressive attack on Venezuela under the pretex of fighting drug barons. Infact the United States has declared the Venezuelan President wanted and are determined to topple his government.

The real Israel in the Bible has long time gone into EXTINCTION. What we call Israel today is only an extension of United States in the Middle East.

Did this really happen in Onitsha?! Because I am so surprise. How manage? Who is trying to 'victimize' these traders?! This can't be true?! I can't believe what I just read. In Onitsha? No, it can't be true. Such can only happen where there are 'agberos'.

Bottom line. Until that day, we drop all of our sentiments and really face our challenges objectively. That is when we will find solutions to them.

What was the occasion? Wike is really lobbying hard to prove to Tinubu that he and Fubara are now on the same page. He's feeling the pressure from home and desperately wants the state of emergency called off even more than Fubara.
Fubara said this without anyone forcing him to say so. And if you say he said so just to be able to get back as governor without being sincere. It shows that Fubara is not a good human being whose words can be trusted, since it played out as so with Wike.
