I do pre-orders and if anyone tells you it will take 3 weeks to get you a car from USA, then run.
On the average, it takes me 6-8weeks to get a car on pre-order depending on the Vehicle's condition
If you want it in 4weeks minimum, then you have to spend more.
A couple of factors contribute to thi;.

The first one is price. You will hear some people saying things like, 'my colleague got his from America through his brother for 1.550m why are u charging me 1,850m?'. You forget to factor in that his could be chance buying, could be accidented and a whole lot of other factors that i may not be able to remember. If you want a car straight from a dealers shop or dealers auction, then bruv, you got to pay more. Also, setting unrealistic feature targets can be a hindrance. I have had to manage a client telling me not to get her a 2002 car with a mileage not more than 40k miles and am kind of wondering, where i go find that one and when i did ask her for more money to meet up, you needed to see her reaction. Another is color specification. I don't want black, green, red, white etc. these things are factors that will contribute to the delays.

The second one is shipping. When you must have traversed the lenght and breadth of all the auctions in USA and gotten a good car for your client, you are then at the mercy of the shipping agency to get your vehicle on board. This is not much of a problem but if you are in an area in USA that has just one shipping line servicing that area, then you have issues to worry about. e.g is California. You might get the cleanest and cheapest of cars in Cali but whatever you may have saved is down with shipping. You can only do container cars in california unless you are ready to spend another $700 or more with the attendant logistics delay to truck that car to the nearest drop off zone for a RORO vessel. Another tight area is Texas with just Hoegh doing a once-per-month transit from Galveston. The best places so far to buy and ship from is New Jersey, New York, Savannah, Baltimore etc. due to the frequency of Grimaldi's transit from these areas.

But the beauty of it all is that the moment u can book and get your vehicle on board, then you can easily predict when you will have the car. Hence, what i tell my clients is 3 weeks from date of vessel sail and 6-8weeks from date of payment to factor in these delays.

Wharf congestion is yet another issue. Sometime last year, i did a very quick transaction that i kinda marvelled at the pace. I bought and got the vehicle on the next vessel to Tincan in a space of 24 days around November last year but spent nearly a month to get the car. Reason; by the time the vessel arrived Tincan, there was no berthing space and we had to wait for as long as God knows to get one. In the end, the car meant for the xmas holidays was only gotten in the 2nd week of January this year.

Infact, If you intend buying a car this year from USA and you haven't started processes, them am sorry to say, if Grimaldi doesn't service the area you are shipping from, then you may not get that car this year. As i type with you, 5 star terminal is already congested and we get to hear this story year in year out.

SO CLIENTS, the important thing is being realistic in your demands and place possibilities within reach. Anyone who says he can get you a car in even 4 weeks and he hasn't even bought the car, is saying something far from the truth. This is from personal experience as a pre-order specialist.
