Audio allegedly of Wike threatening INEC officials sparks controversy

An audio recording allegedly of Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, threatening officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission has gone viral, sparking controversy.

The recording, uploaded by SaharaReporters, is said to be of a phone conversation between the governor and two officials of INEC.

According to the recording, entitled “Governor Nyesom Wike caught on tape bribing INEC officals to rig Rivers election rerun”, a voice said to be of the governor could be heard threatening to deal with and even kill officials who he suggested had been paid if they failed to deliver.

The U.S through its ambassador to Nigeria, Stuart Symington, warned officials not to obey illegal directives issued in Buhari’s name. 

Stuart Symington who gave the warning while speaking to journalists after a meeting with Benue state governor, Samuel Ortom,  also warned Nigerian political leaders of severe sanctions if their comments incite the people to violence that disrupts the smooth conduct of the general election.

Stuart who further stated that political leaders have a responsibility to ensure that the elections this year are free and fair, cautioned  against taking implementing illegal directives to manipulate the elections. Channels TV reported that US envoy said;
