Money is good, but the love of money is
the root of all evil. Men of the Nigerian
police force have
arrested a man for selling his own wife
to
black magic practitioners who were looking for a vir-gin to sacrifice, all in
a
bid to make quick money. According to
police, the deal which was
struck in the central Nigerian state of
Plateau was cancelled at the last minute
when the ritualists realised that the
woman was not a vir-gin but a
housewife. “The man lured his wife to a
bush under
the pretext of fetching firewood and sold her to two ritualists for 800,000
naira (about $5,000), Plateau state
police spokesman Abuh Emmanuel
told
AFP. He said the man, from Kwalla
town, lied to the ritualists that the woman was a virgin and had been given
part of the money. “When the ritualists
discovered that the
woman was the man’s wife, they asked
her to go because she could not be used
for the sacrifice,” he said. The husband and his two accomplices
were arrested after the wife reported
the
incident to the police. “The suspects are
in our custody and will
be taken to court for criminal conspiracy
and an attempted murder,” he said.

NBC has Banned Popular Hit Song Shoki .. Read along! In an obviously ill thought out move to
seem relevant, the Nigerian broadcasting
Commission (NBC) has slammed a ban on
Nigeria’s latest tune export, ‘ Shoki ’. The media adviser of the NBC who spoke
at a press briefing told FNN
correspondent that ” the song ‘Shoki’
which is a Yoruba slang for ‘quickie’ has
spread to other African countries and
everybody is singing what they don’t understand, even my two year old
daughter came to my room and just
started muttering ‘ahh shoki’, its a scary
experience, so we banned it”. This directive has not gone down well with
media houses and the end consumers of
the monster banger as there was a protest
in front of the NBC office with the
protester mounting massive sub-woofer

Nigerians are currently paying more
for
cement than most countries around us,
even smaller countries. But it seems all
that would soon change. Dangote
Cement has assured Nigerians that the era of
highly priced cement will soon be over
as it has concluded plans to increase its
production in all its three key plants in
the country and also simplify its
distribution network with the aim of crashing the price and making the
products available to all Nigerians.
President of Dangote Group, Aliko
Dangote, disclosed this at a recent
customers’ forum held in Kano State.
He said that his company had concluded
plans to expand the capacity of its
production lines, in Obajana, Kogi
state, Gboko, Benue state, and Ibese,
Ogun
state, from the current 19.25 million metric tonnes (mmt) by additional 9
million tons by the end of the year.
Dangote further said that the
expansion
will move the production output of the
three manufacturing plants to about 28
million tonnes, which will position his
company as the biggest cement
production entity in Africa. Justifying
the production of the new
42.5 grade of cement in the country, Dangote said, the move was borne out
of the quest to save the nation from the
national embarrassment of mounting
incidents of building collapse, with its
attendance loss of lives and property.

One of the three persons taken to the
Ebola virus quarantine centre in
Emohua Local Government Area of
Rivers State, has tested positive for the
disease. The latest case, an elderly
woman, contracted the virus in Good Heart
Hospital, the health facility where Dr.
Iyke Enemuo, the doctor who treated
an
ECOWAS diplomat, Koye Olu-Ibukun,
died last week. Late doctor Enemuo’s sister, Chinyere,
has now been taken to the quarantine
centre. The two others – a doctor and a
pharmacist – tested negative. Even
though they had been released from the
centre, another round of tests will however be carried out to reconfirm
their
status. The doctor and the pharmacist
are
members of staff of Sam Steel Clinic, a
health facility founded by Enemuo. The Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi
Chukwu, and the Rivers State
Commissioner for Health, Dr. Sampson
Parker, made these developments
known
in Abuja and Port Harcourt on Monday. Chukwu, at the opening of the 2nd
National Council on Health meeting on
the outbreak of the EVD in Nigeria,
also
said that the Federal Government had
indicated interest to participate in the clinical trials of two Japanese vaccines
to combat the disease. The minister,
who said the government
had also applied for other experimental
drugs, including TKM-Ebola, dispelled
rumours of an outbreak of the disease in
the Federal Capital Territory. He said
that investigation had revealed
the person involved was a sickle cell
patient. Chukwu said, “The Treatment
Research Group which I had informed you about,
has been working hard to identify
experimental drugs like Zmapp, and
also
make recommendations to
government on further research on these drugs as
well as vaccines for EVD treatment
and
isolation. “Following the TRG’s
recommendations
and in consultation with NAFDAC and NHREC, Nigeria has indicated interest
to
participate in the clinical trials for two
candidate EVD vaccines and we are
considering that a third may be added
to the list. We have also applied for experimental drugs such as TKM-
Ebola. “The TRG has submitted a
detailed profile
and brief on the oral antiviral agent
which the Japanese government has
offered to make available to affected countries through the World Health
Organisation. We are now considering
the profile and brief to enable us to
reach a
final decision on making it available to
our patients. “Our initial knowledge of the agent is that
it has been shown to have strong
antiviral
activity against the influenza virus
following phases I and II human trials,
it is now going through phase III clinical
trials; it is shown to have strong
antiviral property against Ebola virus
in vitro and
in vivo. These and the fact that it is
considered safe, having passed through phases I and II clinical trials, makes it
good candidate drug for use in
emergency
situation as the EVD.” Chukwu also
gave an update of the EVD
since its outbreak in the country, adding
that government’s performance in
sustaining the spread of the disease had
been lauded by all stakeholders.
According to him, as of August 31, 2014,
the total number of cases of EVD in Nigeria stood at 17 while the total
number
of cases treated at the isolation ward in
Lagos State is 14. Also, the total
number of those
discharged is seven while the total number of deaths among those treated
in
Lagos is five.

Ikeja – The Lagos State Government on
Monday said it had received the N200million
pledged by the Federal Government to
support the containment of the Ebola Virus
Disease in the state. Gov. Babatunde Fashola confirmed receipt of
the fund while receiving some Ebola
protective and relief items donated by MTN
Nigeria in Ikeja. The governor said the state government
received the money on Wednesday and
thanked the Federal Government for
fulfilling its pledge. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports
that President Goodluck Jonathan had
announced a pledge of N200million to the
state to support its efforts at containing the
spread of the virus. Jonathan said the N200million was not part
of the N1.9billion Ebola Intervention Fund
that would be released to Federal Ministry of
Health to contain the spread of the disease. “Yes we have received the money. We got the
N200million on Wednesday. It is definitely
going to help in our efforts to contain the
virus,’’ Fashola said. The governor said that the state government
was working closely with the Federal
Government and other partners to
effectively fight the disease. He noted that the Lagos index case was the
first urban case of the disease in history. Fashola said that the quick response of the
state government to the problem had saved
Nigeria what could been a pandemic. The governor said though the state was not
yet free of the disease, “the successful
treatment of eight hitherto patients means
that Nigeria is winning the war against the
virus.’’ He described the spread of the disease to
Rivers State as very unfortunate, saying that
the state government was sharing knowledge
and information with Rivers on its successful
containment. Commenting on the on the postponement of
schools resumption to Oct 15 by the Federal
Government, Fashola said, “though issues like
that are on the concurrent list, schools in the
state would comply with the directive.’’ The governor, however, said there was the
need for Federal Government to always carry
states along on issues that concerned them. Fashola, however, urged residents not to
panic about the Ebola Disease. He advised them to have the belief that the
disease would soon be defeated and take
precautions to be safe from it. “We are at a stage where, like I said before, we
do not need to panic. Ebola virus is not an
automatic death sentence. “A lot of knowledge is being gained on daily
basis, even at this moment, about the
behavior of the virus and that knowledge is
helping scientists to prepare even better to
respond. “Different types of virus have been identified
and we now have clarity about the length and
life span of the virus. “That body of knowledge helps in the
management of disease,” he said. Fashola thanked MTN for donating the items
to the state government. He said that the materials would help the state
government‘s efforts at containing the
spread of the disease. Earlier, Mr Paschal Dozie, Chairman MTN
Nigeria, who presented the items, said the
gesture was to support efforts at fighting the
disease
and promote public health. Dozie commended the state government for
the effective handling of the Ebola disease in
the state. “ We thank God that it started off in Lagos
because if it had started elsewhere, we would
have had a pandemic. “Why did I say so? Their reaction was
profound, dignified, their response
professionally systematic,’’ he said. Dozie said that his team had come to express
their appreciation and lend support. “We have already started supporting their
cause by providing call centres, that is, the
Ebola Hot line where we have doctors
responding
to enquiries and findings. “ Today we have come to provide support, a
fairly reasonable quantum of personal
protective items both for the care givers and
other health
workers. “We commend the state and we will stay by
you in this fight against the virus,” he said. NAN reports that the items donated by the
MTN include protective gear, drugs and
