The other day I sat peering out the window on a lonely ride towards the ojodu Berger road, thought miles away pondering about life in general. The little girl sitted beside me began coughing vigorously spitting what I could not make out into an handkerchief handed to her by a woman i presumed to be her mother. She hit the little girl's back constantly urging her to breathe. I intensely stared at her as i wondered where she could have gotten such a terrible cough. Her mother layed her head on her laps, now gently stroking her as her cough resumed. On instinct I moved sideways a little wondering if I could move any further as i was already at the edge where my body literally cuddled with the vehicle. "Make this girl no infect me with one kind disease abeg" i murmured to myself as I whispered an inaudible sorry to the girl Wishing I could quickly get to my destination. The cough subsided after her mother had given her more than 4 doses of inhaler as she urged her to breathe. This asthma nawa oooo What is wrong with her ma? Various commuters asked as majority insisted they left the bus before infecting them This one pass ebola oo, i heard one say The young lady at my front whose face was painted beyond recognition rudely hisses. Madam make this girl no die for this bus ooo. Haa!! Which kind bus be this Chi m oo, ogini na eme omalicha nwata , the guy who you could tell was obviously igbo asked. I did not understand a word he said but he sounded sympathetic as he tried to ask the woman what the problem was, in English i could not comprehend. I stared at the little girl as she slowly began to regain her breath, she could not be older than 12. I was drawn to her as i assisted her mother in patting Dera's back as i later discovered her name to be. She smiled at me and in my whole life a smile had never cut through the depths of my heart as hers did. She uttered a low "thank you aunt" What is wrong with her ? i asked her mother aware of the fact that there was more to the cough She has CF, cystic fibrosis she said CF I uttered, unaware of the illness as i continued patting Dera's back as they alighted from the bus on getting to their destination waving me bye.
