Barely two days after the police announced the evacuation of 18 dead bodies found in Ezu River in Amansea, Awka North Local Government Area of Anambra State, four more bodies have surfaced in the river. Two out of the four surfaced on Wednesday while another two were discovered floating on the river yesterday.

Yesterday’s discovery coincided with the visit to the scene by the Senator representing Anambra Central Senatorial District, which Amansea is part of, Chris Ngige, who vowed to ensure that the mystery behind the dead bodies and their dumping in the river was unraveled. Ngige also called on the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to come to the aid of the people of the area, whose only source of water had been poisoned by the dumping of dead bodies whose actual number and identities were yet to be confirmed, with materials for medical attention and other forms of assistance.

Confirming the discovery of more corpses, the traditional ruler of Amansea, Igwe Kenneth Okonkwo, while welcoming Ngige to his palace, said: “We had thought that the bodies have finished only to be shocked that more bodies are surfacing.” Corroborating him, a former councilor from Amaowelle village where the river is located, Chief Alphonsus Nwene said that “there is possibility that several other dead bodies are still in the water and once they decompose sufficiently they will come afloat.”

But addressing the people at scene, the former governor of the state, Ngige said, “I’ve discussed with Governor Peter Obi, he seems to have no clue as to what is happening, he told me that, so I decided I must come here myself so that we can discuss as Senator representing this area in the National Assembly. I am here at Ezu River and I have seen with my own eyes, not hearsay, not story, not media stories two corpses here now.

“But one thing I must assure you is that we must unravel the mystery of these corpses. We will find out what is happening and when we find it, we will stop it and we must stop it that is why I am here.” He promised to contact the Inspector General of Police on the issue, haven discussed with the state Police Commissioner and state director of the State Security Services (SSS).

Ngige warned the people not to use water from the river again until a time it would be certified okay for their use as the chemicals being used to disinffect it and the environs were toxic in nature and would be harmful if they drank from the river now.

The Senator donated to the people 6,000 cartons of water and promised that motorized borehole would be sunk in the area in his 2013 constituency project programme.

Her brother in –law Njoku Chibueze, who was in his room at the moment and saw what his brother’s wife did to his dog. came out to tackle her, wanting an explanation why would she poured water on his dog just because the dog wanted to drink water from a cup. That led to an exchange of insulting words between Uloma and Chibueze.

Mrs. Uloma Njoku went to the back yard to spread the clothes she had washed. Chibueze had gone into his room. He came out with a plastic bowl filled with petrol and went directly to Mrs. Uloma Njoku, who was hanging the clothes she had washed at the back yard. Without delay he poured the fuel on her, and set her on fire and then ran away. It was Uloma’s neighbours heard her cry and tried to quenched the fire, and then hurried her to the community health centre.

As a result of the severe burns she had suffered she dead the following day. Uloma had never been in good terms with Chibueze, adding that the death of Uloma should be blamed on her husband, Emma Njoku. “This incident is nothing but the climax of accumulated grievances by Chibueze. But he went too far this time and that is why the youths had to hunt for him.

The youths of the village who could no longer bear the violence of Chibueze had to fish him out from hiding and hand him over to the police. Many members of the community said Chibueze Njoku had, before the latest massacre of setting his elder brother’s wife on fire, been a terror in the village. One of the community members, a man, said the people, including his family members, were afraid of him, as he had once threatened to kill his elder brother and his children.
