Atiku Thanks UK For Pledging £200 million To Rebuild Nigeria Former vice president Atiku Abubakar has expressed appreciation to the United Kingdom, which he described as Nigeria’s oldest friend and ally for pledging the sum of £200 million for the rebuilding of Nigeria. The commendation was contained in a statement signed by the former Vice President and circulated by his media office on Thursday. The statement reads: ? I thank the United Kingdom, Nigeria’s oldest friend and ally, for pledging £200 million to rebuild Nigeria, especially the Northeast geo political zone from which I hail. To paraphrase George Bernard Shaw, the UK and Nigeria are two countries separated by a common language. Our two nations have too much in common not to have common ground. As I said to the UK’s Prime Minister, Theresa May, when I met her earlier this summer, Nigeria is not asking for what we have not given. The gallant men and women of our armed forces have given their lives and limbs to bring peace and prosperity to nations all over the world and in time past we made generous contributions to the development of other nations. I also urge other long term friends of Nigeria to support our Federal Government as we rebuild our nation and defeat our common enemies in the war on terror. Once again thank the United Kingdom for such a kind gesture. May God bless our Anglo-Nigerian relationships.

Police Re-Open 24-Year Rape Case Against Sahara Reporters Publisher The Nigerian Police have reopened investigations into a 24-year University of Lagos (UNILAG) rape case, which involves the publisher of Sahara Reporters, Omoyele Sowore. Sowore, who in 1993, was a Geography student at UNILAG, also served as the cultist-backed student union president, where he was known as “Show Boy.” According to the Police, in Surulere, Lagos State, towards the end of his tenure as the president of the union, police archives show that there were an alarmingly large number of rape-related cases on the UNILAG campus. The archives also reveal that due to the influence of Sowore and the violence meted out against students and administrators who opposed him and his cult, many of the affected girls who were the girlfriends of the opposing cult group members, failed to report several of the rape cases that were well known in UNILAG at the time. However, the reopened case has focused on a particular 1993 rape case, which was investigated under the command of Mike Okiro, who was then the Area Commander of Surulere. The case reports show that one Mr. Omoyele Sowore, born on the 16th of February, 1971, was invited for questioning regarding his involvement in the sexual assault of a female student of UNILAG. The investigation notes also described the assault as “graphic”, stating that the primary suspects were Mr. Sowore, and two other male accomplices whose identities were not known by the victim. Okiro, who went on to become the Inspector General of the Nigerian Police Force, disclosed in 2013 that following the allegations of rape against Mr. Sowore, he (Sowore) sought the help from some individuals in the international community to secure a traveling visa to the United States under false pretenses. “I arrested him when I was Surulere Area Commander of the Nigeria Police. I prosecuted him and he jumped bail”, Okiro said. In the past, Sowore bragged in an interview with an online platform, News Express, that he has been arrested at least 8 times and that he met Okiro in 1993.

ATIKU MEDIA OFFICE PRESS RELEASE In This Period of Sacrifice, Let Us Sacrifice for Benue – Atiku Yola, Adamawa, Nigeria, 01 September, 2017: Former Vice President and chieftain of All Progressives, Atiku Abubakar says the massive flooding in Benue state that has led to the displacement of over 100,000 fellow Nigerians is a harrowing experience and that he is moved to sympathize with the people of Benue State. The Waziri Adamawa said that the catastrophic flooding in Benue also happening as the nation marks Eid-el-Kabir (eid-al-Adha), places an even greater duty of care on all of us who participate in this feast of sacrifice, which marks Prophet Ibrahim's (Abraham) willingness to sacrifice his son. A statement released by the Atiku Media Office quoted the former Vice President, who is also the Zege Mule U Tiv as urging that just as the patriarch Ibrahim made sacrifices for humanity, we all should consider sacrificially doing our part to come to the aid of our brothers and sisters in Benue. In this regard, Atiku is thus making a donation of Five Million Naira to the relief efforts for the flood victims in Benue state, according to the statement. He also calls on other Nigerians to be their brother's keeper in his time of need. Atiku Abubakar noted that it is most gratifying that the Federal Government, through the National Emergency Management Agency, has mobilized human and material resources to the affected areas and commends President Muhammadu Buhari for this intervention. Again, the Zege Mule U Tiv commiserates with the government and people of Benue state as they go through these challenges, and urges them to stand firm as all Nigerians feel their pain and share their suffering. www.atiku.org www.facebook.com/atiku.org www.twitter.com/atiku |

Atiku hails Igbo quit notice withdrawal Former vice president and chieftain of All Progressives Congress, Atiku Abubakar, has commended the Northern youth groups for rescinding their quit notice given to people of Igbo origin to leave the northern part of Nigeria by October 1. Mr. Abubakar, in a statement by his media office in Abuja on Friday, said of the development: “at last, good judgment has prevailed.” He however appealed to the Coalition of Northern Groups and the Arewa Youths Council to go the whole hog and drop any other condition given to people of Igbo origin living in Northern Nigeria or anywhere else in the nation. “Reconciliation must be total or else it is Pyrrhic,” Mr. Abubakar said. “In the spirit of this rapprochement, the Waziri Adamawa also calls on other ethnic groupings that might have issued counter quit notices to accept this olive branch and rescind whatever notices or withdraw whatever statements they may have made,” the press statement said. The former vice president commended President Muhammadu Buhari for his national broadcast condemning such developments and urged other elders and elder statesmen around the nation to likewise add their voices to the condemnation of evil and “henceforth refrain from making statements that undermine Nigeria’s unity.” “To keep Nigeria one is a task that must be done, as a great patriot once said,” Mr. Abubakar stressed. |
An Eye For An Eye Will Leave Nigeria Blind By Atiku Abubakar Again, it has sadly come to my attention that there has been a counter Quit Notice issued in reaction to the unfortunate initial notices issued by some misguided youths in July of this year. Just as I strongly condemned the Quit Notice on people of the Igbo ethnic stock living in Northern Nigeria and the counter quit notices that ensued, I also vehemently condemn the retaliatory Quit Notice given by certain elements in other parts of Nigeria to persons of other origins be they Northern, Yoruba or any other ethnic grouping within our nation. First and foremost, it is a fallacy to believe that there are people of Northern or Southern origin. Nigeria only has people of one origin. We are all of Nigerian origin. As Nigerians, we must be pragmatic enough to realize the obvious truth that an eye for an eye will leave Nigeria blind. Let me at this juncture remind these “quit noticers” that when brothers fight to the death over a domestic dispute, it is their neighbours that eventually end up inheriting their father's property. It is also for this reason, amongst others, that I have urged and still urge that Nigeria should be restructured and that state of origin ought to be removed from our constitution and other relevant laws and policies, to be replaced by state of residency. If we as Nigerians are tied to our residency, rather than the state were our ancestors originated from, this whole idea of Quit Notice would not have arisen in the first place. Let us remember that though we have many ethnic nationalities in Nigeria, we are all largely of one race. In the United Arab Emirates, foreigners exceed the native Emiratis in number, yet the UAE is one of the most peaceful nations on earth. If people of different races can live in peace in South Africa and the United States, why can't we do the same here? In fact, I posit that we can and should do the same. Finally, let me use this opportunity to commend the National Broadcasting Commission and the National Orientation Agency for taking steps to sanction radio stations that were guilty of playing the Igbo hate song and for embarking on an anti hate speech drive. Nigeria is our only country and our value as human beings is tied to the value of Nigeria. So if we must give ourselves value, we must first give Nigeria value. Atiku Abubakar Waziri Adamawa Vice President of Nigeria, 1999-2007 Released by Atiku Media Office 61 Ebitu Ukiwe Street Jabi Abuja Nigeria. www.atiku.org www.facebook.com/atiku.org www.twitter.com/atiku |
BY EMENENA BRIGHT Atiku Abubakar, Waziri Adamawa, a former Vice-President of Nigeria and a former presidential candidate, no doubt may be one of the most maligned high ranking former public office holders from the North. In addition to the public perception that everyone who has been in government has stolen government money and is corrupt, the experience and challenges Atiku Abubakar had with his then boss, during his time as vice president has contributed to whatever perception of him the section of the public may have. There is a general lack of trust for former public office holders, understandably so. For these reasons, whatever any former public office holder says or does must be for his personal aggrandizement in the perception of skeptics. Of course skeptics are many, and will always be. But can we stop for a moment and listen sincerely to what this individual is saying? Can we take a look at our own system and analyze how well we have done, how much we have progressed? We all have this consensus that the Nation has not met her potentials. I saw on Omojuwa’s twitter handle the other day, where he stated “When you read up on Nigerian’s history, it just feels like this country got frozen in time. The same problems over half a century. Kilode?” “Kilode” meaning what happened, in Yoruba, an expression I understood to mean nothing seems to have changed. The agitation arising from all regions of the country are signs of the consensus that the people no longer believe in the present system. It is an old saying and a popular one that is only a fool that will do the same thing over and over again and expect a different result. It really does not matter who says it, I think the content is more important than the container. This is not to say I share the view of those who are disparaging the former vice president for his outspokenness and his position on the issue. As a matter of fact I commend him for his courage and continuous faith in the Nigerian project. But the point I want to buttress is “What is he saying?” Our problems as a people as observed by many have been over centralization, bigotry (be it religious or ethnic) and corruption. The lack of growth and development are only symptoms of the above tripod of pathology which are in turn complications of our present system. The suspicion and lack of trust amongst citizens from different ethnicities and regions have continuously been fed by our present structure. Atiku is saying the present system has not worked for even his region despite other regions of the country’s perception that his region, the north presently benefits the most from the present arrangement. This is a view that most other people also share. He has said one United Nigeria is possible if we practice true federalism. He is again not alone in thinking that the period in the history of Nigeria when we made the most progress coincided with the period when our dear country practiced federalism as it was intended. Bearing in mind that there is no such thing as “True federalism”, and that federal systems generally evolved in society in line with their peculiar challenges with a view to solving them. True federalism cannot be some kind of system that is cast on stone otherwise there will not be congresses and assemblies as it is with most democracies. Law making is a continuum and the structure of government is part of the law that needs to be continuously reviewed. Atiku has consistently called for a major change in the present arrangement (Restructuring). As germane as this call may be, I have heard argument against him with great surprise, especially because such arguments have also come from people you expect should know better. Despite the former Vice President’s courage and visionary ideas, I find it not too surprising that opposition are abound. The former military president Gen. Ibrahim Babangida also expressed support for a system change a few weeks ago and the polity was laced with similar reactions. No doubt that some of our former leaders had opportunity to do “right” and they didn’t. But are they not allowed to change their views? Should their views not be affected by changing situations? From the period of the Ibrahim Babangida’s administration till now is a long time and there is no doubt that a lot has changed.Despite that, Atiku has been quite consistent with his view on the need to practice true federalism. As far back as 2009 at the National Conference On Consensus Building For Electoral Reform held at the Transcorp Hilton, Abuja as a keynote speaker, despite applauding almost totally all the recommendations of the Justice Uwais commission on electoral reforms, he Atiku still pointedly disagreed with the commission’s recommendation that state electoral bodies be taken over by the federal INEC and reason he gave was that should that happen, it will further make a mess of our federal system of government. As Vice President, he also spoke against the over concentration of power amongst other things at the center and has in different fora expressed the need for devolution of power to the federating units (States). I do not believe that any one man has the magic wand that solves our numerous challenges nor do I believe that the solution to our problems is one prong and that with restructuring all our problems will go away. The former vice president has also expressed his views that restructuring may not necessarily be an easy sail. But we shall search for the eye of the fish in the head of the fish as looking elsewhere will only be a waste of time. In the Vanguard Newspaper of 30th July, 2017 the former Governor of Edo state Adams Oshiomhole joined the barrage of individuals who have tried to disparage Atiku’s stance on our political outlook and was quick again to ask what the former vice president did during his time. He “Adams” went further to describe restructuring as some ambiguous word employed by politicians to hoodwink gullible Nigerians. The question being asked is why is Atiku just realizing? Why didn’t he restructure Nigeria when he was Vice President for 8 years? I will like to draw our attention to the Atiku vice presidential era so we will be able to mirror what it would have looked like calling for restructuring just after returning to Democracy in 1999.The Country was ruled by the military for 16 years and in this period the focus by all well-meaning Nigerians was to return the country to Democracy. A struggle he, Atiku was well part of. Wouldn’t it have been foolhardy to begin to call for restructuring only after the then 1999 constitution has barely been tested? Well I have news for all naysayers, I and millions of Nigerians are not gullible, we have just refused to be called stupid as doing same thing over again and expecting a different outcome only makes us stupid. A day after Oshiomhole’s vituperation, I read again, Alhaji Yakassai’s interview in the same Vanguard Newspaper. My first observation was his striking mental alertness considering his age and I quite respect him for that. But once again he showed his opposition to restructuring by pointing out the perceived complexity of the process and attempting to puncture Atiku’s position. I do not agree with him or anyone who interpreted Atiku’s speech at the University of Nigeria (UNN) recently to mean he is saying restructuring Nigeria is going to be easy. And I say to them that hard ailment requires hard medication. The country has been held down for far too long by this present system of government and is responsible for all the vices we have now become characterized with. The cry that time is running out by Atiku is real and to continue to vilify him for his positioning is ludicrous. Vice President Atiku Abubakar and chieftain of All Progressives Congress (APC) has described as patriotic the groundswell of positions for the restructuring of Nigeria by leaders and stakeholders of diverse regions and leanings. He said the recent debate about restructuring is confirmation that he was not a lone voice in the wilderness over the inevitability of tweak in the national arrangement for the good of all. He also cautioned that attempt at ignoring the agitations could complicate the already bad situation. The former VP in a statement in Abuja on Tuesday from his media office commended the resolution of the APC Progressive Governors Forum that aligned recently with restructuring and true federalism, stressing that the issue transcends religion and ethnicity. According to him; “The convergence of positions around restructuring by leaders and stakeholders from diverse regions of the country is a show of patriotism and confirmation that I am was not just a lone voice in the wilderness on the inevitability of restructuring of Nigeria for the good of all. “The agitations for secession would not have arisen in the first place if the country had shown sincere readiness to address the underlying problems that feed the agitations by separatist forces. The restructuring debate transcends the ambition of any single politician in Nigeria, and any attempt to ignore the agitations could make a bad situation more complicated,” he warned. According to him; “Avoiding a problem won’t solve that problem. With so much hate, distrust, suspicions and fears in the country, political leaders shouldn’t be afraid to confront the challenge. “Our current federal structure should be freely discussed by allowing the federating units voice their grievances to find a workable solution that protects the rights and interests of all. The country could not afford bottled up frustrations of the people that may explode into violence, which threatens not only innocent lives but also harms the country’s economic assets,” he warned. |
