Your father lied to you unfortunately. The itshekiri migrated from Ife via Benin and during the post colonial regional governments were within Western region, their area is closer to Edo and Lagos, they travelled via canoe up the lagoon to Lagos and traded with the Ijaw and Urhobo. They also have Lukumí tribes in Delta north another group that migrated from Ife after the itshekiri.

In 1963 the itshekiri along with Edo etc formed Midwest aka Bendel, at no point in time has the itshekiri associated with the Igbo. Unlike other groups who took on Igbo identity the itshekiri maintained their yoruboid/Benin igodomigodo language and identity
