But spacetime, just like fabric, can bend or warp in areas where there is mass. The more mass there is, the more this fabric bends. Where spacetime bends because of the presence of a massive object such as a star, objects like planets or asteroids or spacecraft of lesser mass traveling in that region of space follow that curved path. Because the massive object curves space towards itself, the traveling object follows that curved path towards the mass that created the path. This makes the traveling object "fall" towards the center, towards the mass. This is what's perceived as gravity.

So in summary, gravity is simply a curved path in space that a massive object creates, which makes objects of less mass moving along that path to follow that curved path towards the object that created the curvature.

For example, the sun curves the space around it, which makes the planets "fall" towards the sun as they follow this curvature. However, because each planet "falls" into the sun as fast as it travels "away" from the sun, they are trapped in this gravity well that's known as an orbit. That is, the earth is locked in orbit as it follows the curved path the sun makes in space, but earth is not going to crash into the sun because it also has velocity. So in essence, the fall into the sun in balanced by the velocity away from the sun, so the equilibrium is an elliptical and perpetual orbit, or motion around the sun, which takes roughly 365 days (1 year) to complete.

This curvature and orbit is the reason that the moon orbits the earth, because the earth's mass creates a local curvature that the moon follows.

To get spacecraft into earth orbit, you launch it atop a rocket leaving earth at escape velocity. Escape velocity is the speed required to escape from this gravity well or curvature of space caused by the mass of earth. It's around 24,923 miles per hour.

Once the spacecraft achieves this speed, it's placed in a trajectory that ensures stable orbit. How? Well, the spacecraft goes into freefall as the earth's gravity "pulls" it back in, but the speed keeps the spacecraft going in a straight line away from earth. Because the velocity is not sufficient to enable the spacecraft leave the earth's gravity, but it's fast enough to prevent it falling in, the net effect is that the spacecraft is falling into earth in such a way that it misses the earth, since the earth is a globe (well, an oblate spheroid really), and then the spacecraft travels round and round without ever leaving or falling down.

Now, as to weightlessness. Einstein shows that constant acceleration in space and free fall have similar effects and are largely indistinguishable. When one is in free fall, they experience no weight. Since the spacecraft is in constant free fall (orbit) around the earth, you feel weightlessness. This is not the absence of gravity which is always present: it is the effect of constant acceleration around a curved mass (sort of like the parabolic flights used to train astronauts on earth to experience weightlessness). In fact, being in space is similar to buoyancy effects under water at depth, hence why they train them inside a tank to experience weightlessness.

The ISS is in free fall around earth and the free fall induces weightlessness.

In summary, weightlessness is a result of free fall at constant escape velocity within a gravity well.

I missed your last question so here it is.

Someone falling down to earth will not be shredded by the earth's gravity. Like i said, in free fall one does not really experience the existence of gravity, one is weightless.

What destroys unshielded objects falling from space is the heat of reentry. Remember when i said objects need a certain escape velocity to reach space? Say you were shot into orbit at 24,923 miles per hour, or 11 kilometers per second. You need to reduce this speed a little to allow gravity overcome and then you fall back to earth.

So you reduce your speed a little, by say 200 miles per hour. This change in velocity (known as Delta V) slows you down enough that you begin to fall.

But before then, you still retain your original velocity of 24,923 mph. Now you've reduced to 24,723mph.

You begin to fall back down at that speed, and then you hit the dense earth's atmosphere at that speed. You're going so fast you're stripping air molecules so fast that the air around you heats up and creates a very hot plasma. This plasma will burn you up quickly if you've no heat shield.

So it's the heat of reentry at tremendous speed as you slammed into the upper atmosphere that destroys falling bodies, not gravity.

There's gravity in the entire solar system. The idea that there's no gravity in space is a lie, at least not when there are massive bodies around to exert curvature on spacetime. The sun's gravity is felt even at the very edges of the solar system, hence why even Kuiper Belt Objects (KBOs) a billion kilometers beyond Pluto have been orbiting the sun for billions of years.

Also, the ISS is already in free fall, that's why they experience weightlessness and how the ISS stays in orbit. Many people assume incorrectly that they're floating because there's no gravity, but in reality it's because they're in free fall at escape velocity.

When one considers the fiery dangers of reentry, simply falling out of the sky is a no-no.

Please can you explain this in a lay man view and to my own understanding because I don't understand what you are saying here. Someone also said if they make a free fall, earth gravity will tear them to pieces. I'll love to know more about this space thing. Thank you
