CWM means "ClockWork Mod"
as d name implies RECOVERY it can be use to recover partitions of ur ROM or d entire ROM itself

by default an android device comes wit a stock recovery. bt it aint gud wen it comes 2 rootin aspect

u nid a custom recovery 2 backup ur ROM afta root just to be safe

and also u nid it to flash a custom rom 2....and many more
