Politics › Holy Cow! Hindus Plan Wee Drink by TalkSmith(op): 12:19pm On Feb 21, 2009
A Hindu group in India is taking healthy living to the extreme - with plans to release a soft drink made from cow's urine.

It might not sound appetizing to non-Hindus, but it is claimed the fizzy beverage will help fight a number of diseases, including cancer.

Of course, a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down - with the bovine urine to be mixed with other products, such as aloe vera and gooseberry.

The wee tonic will undergo laboratory tests in the coming months, according to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), or National Volunteer Organisation.

"Cow urine offers a cure for around 70 to 80 incurable diseases like diabetes. All are curable by cow urine," said Om Prakash, the head of the RSS cow protection department.

"It is useful for the whole country and the world as well."

The group have not yet specified a release date for the drink.

Many Hindus believe the animals' urine to have medicinal properties and it is often drunk at religious festivals.

In the past, the RSS group has campaigned against foreign imports such as Pepsi and Coca Cola, considering them a tool of Western imperialism.
A Military government(Idiagbon-esque) would go a long way to instil discipline in Nigeria.
Before they were toppled, things were beginning to shape well.
Citizens were orderly and had they been allowed to complete their transition to a democratic government we woulda been better off.
I cannot see the difference between OBJ's regime and the previous Military governments. He was worse than Abacha.
The same discipline Arogundade could not instill into his naval ratings, when a civilian was being ridiculed and undressed on the streets of Lagos last year?

Or the same discipline Babaginda, Abacha et al could not instill, to keep their hands off the nations wealth? Please say something more relevant. There were clear differences between OBJ's regime and that of Abacha. No more were journalists rounded up and thrown into random jails for speaking against the Government. OBJ was on the verge of extending into his stay into a third term, our ''democracy'' ensured this was not to be!

Yes, some of the things obtainable during the military era were still obtainable with OBJ and even with this present administration, however, there have been clear moment of respite for the citizenry. I remember early in those days, you dare not pass through the houses of some those Army Generals, if you would not be subjected to frog jumping in respective of your gender.

Our present day ''democracy'' has totally erased the memories of such horror amongst numerous others from our thoughts.

Why must the peaceful religion continue to be vilified? What do you Christians stand to gain? I have not seen where Jesus ever rebuked another religion for his own religion.

What is your problem?
Politics › Re: Western Style Democracy: Really The Answer For Africa? by TalkSmith: 5:32pm On Feb 20, 2009
Becomrrich:
The western type of democratic govt is the best for africa and Nigeria. the problem we have in Nigeria can only be solve if we remove the yorubas from nigeria and have them in republic of benin.

Britain never consider culture or history in nigeria why they were thier. Take for example kwara and kogi state, why the hell where they part of northern region. When they should have been in the western region.

We have to correct the structure mistake to have true democratic govt in Nigeria.

In the case of Ghana or the USA. You would see a define majority. In Nigeria there is no define majority.

Look in Ghana the asantic people are majority and the democracy in ghana is sure away that asantic have only rule 2 times. The fear of ethnics domination is lower in Ghana because the asantic people can easy give power to other group without the fear of getting back power.

In the case of the USA. the same with the white population. The white in the USA are not scared that since Obama a black man is in power that he would be able to manipulate the system and could make sure only blacks are elected in power. That is not possible. The fear by white people is not there, because they know they are the majority and they can kick obama out anytime they want.

The same issue in Nigeria. We do not have a clear 50% majority ethincs group like Ghana or the USA. so the fear of ethnics domination and tribalist runs our politics. But if you remove the yorubas. It would change that. And would make the hausa/fulani the majority and the fear of domination is remove and they would be able to share power without the fear of the power not returning back to them.
Your reasoning is worrisome. Even from the US perspective and the Nigerian perspective. You have committed serious fallacy in reasoning and writing.
How do i rant??
Democracy in Nigeria has continued to make some people richer and some others poorer.
There's no middle-class in Nigeria. . . . .It's either you are very rich or extremely poor.
At this point, i don't mind a military government.

Nigeria will be 50 years next year. Thatz how long.
So a military government is the solution to our problems? During the military era, were the rich not getting richer? Your reasoning is more worrisome. Military government that has placed Nigeria in the level of retardation and mental slavery for years, you are advocating for in these day and age? I suspect you delight in mental slavery and dictatorship.

Oh well, every man to his thoughts.

If after the biafran war progress was not brought into nigeria what makes you think another was is going to bring progress into nigeria  huh More like another war will bring the eventual collapse of nigeria.
I do no think so. It is easier to destroy, than to build. If what we have on ground is not working, development is not staring at us vividly in the face, why continue with the system? Is there any point to it? undecided

nuzo:
This was your comment: It was more of a question to the message than a statement. So, why blame me for commenting according to what you put down.
Maybe next time, you should try hard to convey exactly your thoughts in your comments. Im no prophet.
Sir, maybe next time, you should request I make clear my thoughts with my comments rather than corner my inputs into a box. I would have gladly obliged doing that. If you had paid note, I had an emoticon expressing ''an indecision'' to my statement which meant that my input was not conclusive and still a subject of deliberation within me.

Oh well! undecided

Your comment shows that you dont know anything about the Biafran/nigerian civil war unlike Rwandans.
Typical Nigerian! Quick to open his gob and spit out nonsense. If we had the Biafran war, what progress has it brought unto us unlike what is obtainable with Rwanda today? Has it made any lasting realization on the need for development in Nigeria?

While I share your sentiments on Reuben Abati and his penchant for land acquisition and brown envelopes, I am quick to remind myself, that it is not about the messenger, rather it is about the message. Spare yourself the same thought.

Was the message well delivered? YES!

Tatase:
I think our situation in Nigeria or in other former colonies is difficult because of course in principle, we know that democracy is a good idea (and besides we already did the dictatorship thing and that didn't quite work out so let's leave that in the past). But at the same time, it's not really our culture to be democratic: power has always gone along wealth and connections and alliances and not necessarily public opinion, and besides we can't seem to pull it together as a people and put tribal differences aside for the sake of progress.
When we talk of DEMOCRACY, is not in our culture to be democratic, I agree with you. Given, from where Nigeria is coming from, DEMOCRACY adaptation is not an easy task to embrace. We are more or less as a country, just ten years into ''democracy'' and yet we are so anxious to be at par with WESTERN WORLD such as the US. Years of military rule has not helped this country in whatever means or capacity. Rather retrogression has been the order over the years. Corruption has eaten deep into the nation, and it seems like a mirage if it ever leave us.

If we go back to the early adoption of DEMOCRACY, history makes us to know, that, the Ancient Greeks were the first to adapt democracy. Early adaptation by the Ancient Greeks revealed that; Women and Slaves were not allowed to talk, and have a voice in the Assembly. They were not even regarded as citizens. Only Males were given this honor and regard. Is the Athenian Democracy of then, different from the Democracy obtainable with Nigeria - Africa (In general) today? NO! Cultures, religion, tribalism, sectarianism, greed, corruption have prominent voice over freedom of every citizen to be heard and make an input, which DEMOCRACY in its true and pure form entails.

In the UK, it is a parliamentary sovereignty of Government, which seems to work well with them. How far such a system would be sustainable is a matter of time to tell. In Nigeria, it is a system of the: a. Executive, b. Legislative, and c. Judiciary. In all sincerity, this is realistic and workable. Nigeria maybe 48years+, but just like how democracy has been adapted by various countries, and suited to their own taste, it is time Nigeria truly identifies that voices which suppress the freedom of the true electorates be destroyed.

Tatase:
We're so focused on the drama between tribes: The Yoruba people are always this and that, the Igbo's always want such and such and the Hausas always do this or the other, and as for the minorities like myself, we either just sit like we don't belong or take disruptive actions to get attention and then take whatever political bones the party in power is willing to throw us even as we talk smack about other tribes. And the sad thing is as long as we can't come together as one people, no single political system is going to work for us: Western Democracy or otherwise.
You are very right once more. But in my own opinion, it is best we find what flexibility in democracy can be adapted by Africans - Nigeria. Democracy creates room for flexibility. The democracy obtainable 508BC is not the same democracy obtainable in America or other Western World of today. Every nation has defined democracy to suit their own development over the years. Until we realize that, every voice deserves to be heard and not suppressed in Nigeria, we would continue to see the woes subsistent with democracy.

Taking a retrospective look at Nigeria within the last ten years, are the electorates allowed suffrage? NO! Even when we had the one of the most ''transparent'' election in Nigeria, it was destroyed sadly. Until we realize that, democracy is a the government held by its respective citizen within a free environment, truly fitted with the African culture, and not dictated or controlled by Western power, we would continue to wallow in our state of despondency in finding solutions to our problems.

Tatase:
Because the truth of the matter is that we're all working against each other and trying to sabotage one another so that this person from this tribe can be in power or that person from that tribe doesn't have the opportunity to steal as opposed to the thief from our tribe. So I don't think the problem is really with our ruling style. I think its with us. And thats where I disagree with Moonstone. The point is that yes the West has a lot to answer for, but at the same time, we need to move on and realize that blaming them is not the point or the solution. We as a country are what we are, like it or not, Nigeria is not and will never be made up of one single tribe and we need to figure out how we can come together as a country and make it work. Like I said, the problem is not with democracy, it's with us and how we let our personal arguments with one another change what democracy should be.
The West have nothing to answer for. We are truly accountable for our deeds and actions. If we are this exposed, and yet we cannot find our bearing and still think the West are accountable, then Africa will never develop. The tasks to making democracy work is in our hands, as electorates. If we have to make it work, it is possible.

After perusing the thread, I just noticed your rejoinder to me. My apologies for the late antiphon. Do you mean to say, posts are deleted on facebook as well?

I have not noticed that on the Dap Lam group on facebook. And again, while on facebook, I got the personal and official email contact of Dimeji Bankole from his group page, whom I earlier mentioned, and he replied my mail. So facebook in itself, has great propensity for networking with our current and potential leaders.
