ANDREW2EIC: This question was last yr's jamb. Well, the solution is as follows:
The melting point of ice is 0 degree celsius. In order to melt the ice at -30 degree celsius, u've got to apply a certain amount of heat to increase the temperature to 0 degree celsius. Hence, the qty of heat applied(H1) = mass of ice*specific heat capacity of ice*temperature rise(final - initial,i.e, 0-(-30) = 30 degree celsius) Thus:
H1 = 1*2.1*10^3*30 = 6.3*10^4J.

Again, melting the ice requires heat which is equal to the product of mass of ice and specific latent heat of fusion. Hence, H2 = mL, substituting:

H2 = 1*3.5*10^5 = 3.5*10^5J.

Therefore, total heat required(i.e, H) to melt the ice at -30 degree celsius = H1+H2 = 6.3*10^4 + 3.5*10^5 = 41.3*10^4J. That's the final answer.

in accordance to my own idea,i think the formula is just given to be used for derivation of velocity and acceleration at minimum and maximum point where a=amplitude and x=distance...
