Ghana COVID-19 case count update || The country's COVID-19 case count is up to 11,964.

President Nana Addo Dankwa confirmed this in his 11th address on Sunday night, June 14th, 2020.

“Understandably, more focus has been placed on the rise in the total number of confirmed cases of covid-19. As at midnight of 13th June 2020, the overall number of positives, cumulatively, stands at  (11,964) eleven thousand, nine hundred and sixty-four out of the two hundred and fifty-four thousand three hundred and thirty-one (254,331), tests conducted.”

President Nana Addo Dankwa indicated that 4,258 covid-19 patients had fully recovered and have been discharged home.

Comparing Global COVID-19 statistics to Ghana’s, President Nana Addo Dankwa pointed out that “with fifty-four  deaths currently reported by the Ghana Health Service thus far in Ghana, the ratio of deaths to positive cases stands at 0.4%, compared to the global average of 5.5%, and the African average of 2.6%.”

“The number of coronavirus patient severe and critically ill also continues to be low. I am relating all these figures not to engender any false, feel-good factor, but as statements of fact that must provide the context for us, when we examine our figures.” -he said

“If, indeed, we are to be guided by the data we have, then we must look at the data in all its ramifications, not just one particular aspect of them. That is the proper way to do justice to the data,” the President Nana Addo added.

The latest update comes barely 24 hours after the Ghana Health Service had confirmed that 304 more people had tested positive for covid-19.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has disclosed that Nigeria has expressed interest to be part of the global Coronavirus drug trials and the process will soon be initiated.



Fiona Braka, officer in charge of WHO Nigeria said over 100 countries have joined the solidarity clinical trial and over 1,200 patients have been randomised from the first five countries to evaluate the safety and efficacy of drug combinations.

President Nana Akufo-Addo says that the government will fully cover the bills of low-income consumers of electricity in the country for April, May and June

The remaining consumers who fall outside of this category will enjoy a 50 percent reduction in the cost of electricity for the same period.

The President disclosed this in his sixth national address to the nation on the novel coronavirus on Thursday, April 9, 2020.

“We have decided further measure of mitigation for Ghanaians for the next three months… Government will fully absorb electricity bills for the poorest of the poor, ie: lifeline consumers. This will cover persons who consume 0 to 50-kilowatt hours per month for this period.




This forms part of relief interventions by the state amid the novel coronavirus pandemic. Other categories of consumers will enjoy a 50 percent discount within the same period. For all other consumers, residential and commercial, the government will absorb 50 percent of your electricity bill for this period using your March 2020 bill as the benchmark,” he noted.

Ghana has announced the closure of all its borders effective, March 22, 2020.

The President, Nana Akufo-Addo who announced this Saturday said the decision is to help reduce further escalation of the infection rate in the country.

It was his third address to the nation on the coronavirus pandemic.

He said all the country's borders- land, air and sea- will be closed at midnight on Sunday.

The closure will, however, not apply to goods.

Ghana has confirmed 19 cases that tested positive of the disease also known as COVID-19 with one death recorded in Kumasi, the country's second-biggest city.

The index case of Coronavirus in Nigeria, an Italian man, has tested negative and has been discharged from the Isolation centre of Yaba Mainland Hospital where he was quarantined and treated.

Lagos Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu disclosed this on his official Twitter handle this night.

As the COVID-19 Incident Commander for Lagos, I am glad to inform you that the index case; the Italian gentleman is now negative. Through a combined effort of Lagos, Ogun State and Fed Health Authorities, we were able to limit the transmission of the virus to a single contact.

This involved aggressive contact tracing and containment strategies. However we now have several new imported cases and we hope we can apply the same contact tracing strategy along with social distancing to slow down the outbreak which may be brewing from these new cases.

The index patient consented to donating one unit of white blood (plasma) before he was discharged today. The blood plasma is rich in antibody proteins that target #COVID19 virus. The white blood plasma is frozen in our Bio-bank and will be useful in handling new cases.

The blood plasma will be beneficial for the treatment of new patients in the absence of a defined therapeutic drug for #COVID19 yet. The patient appreciated the exceptional care and support given to him by staff of the infectious Disease Hospital,Yaba and all members of the EOC

The EOC team was extremely happy to bid the patient farewell. Once again, we will like to convey the enthusiasm of the team to do the very best possible in handling incidents of #COVID19'' the governor wrote of Twitter

The first group of medical assistance teams departed Wuhan, Hubei province, the nation's epicenter of the novel coronavirus pneumonia outbreak, on Tuesday as the epidemic situation markedly improved in the hardest-hit city.

The 3,787 medical workers belonging to 49 medical teams from across the country returned to their homes as only one confirmed infection was reported in the city on Monday.

Vice-Premier Sun Chunlan, who heads the special work group sent by the central government to Wuhan for epidemic control, praised the medical workers as the "most admirable people in the new era" for their great dedication and sacrifice in protecting people's lives, safety and health.

Speaking to the members of the national emergency medical rescue team who were leaving Wuhan on Tuesday afternoon, Sun said teams from across the country will withdraw in a gradual, orderly and safe manner.

Those who still have work in treating patients will stay for the time being, and those treating critically ill patients will be the last to leave, she said.

Wu Mengmeng, 30, a respiratory therapist at Binzhou People's Hospital in Binzhou, Shandong province, came to Wuhan as part of the Shandong medical assistance team on Feb 9. Since then, Wu had been working at a temporary hospital in Hanyang district.

"I really think it's an honor to be able to go through the difficulties with the people of Wuhan," Wu said, adding that as the time of departure approached, he felt a little reluctant to leave.

"Some of my patients have become my friends. One of them named Wang Yang, who was transferred to Huoshenshan Hospital for treatment a few days ago, talked with me over the phone last night for a long time. Xie Yingzhu, 27, a doctor from Chengfei Hospital in Chengdu, Sichuan province, said he valued having worked as part of Sichuan's medical assistance team.

"In the temporary hospital, I felt the suffering of the people. I hope normal life here will resume as soon as possible," Xie said. He added that the "unforgettable" days made him better understand the responsibilities shouldered by medical workers.

Ma Fuchun, head of the Shaanxi province contingent, said his team of 43 doctors and nurses managed 988 beds and treated 1,235 patients, together with colleagues from Wuhan and Henan province.

"Thankfully, we had zero patient deaths and zero medical worker infections," Ma said. "Our presence not only reduced the burden of local medical workers but, more importantly, brought confidence to ill Wuhan residents."

Wuhan's cumulative number of confirmed infections reached 50,004 as of Monday night, and 39,220 of those patients had recovered and been discharged.




The National Health Commission said early this month that 346 medical teams had been mobilized to aid prevention and treatment efforts in Wuhan. The teams included 42,600 personnel, including 19,000 medical workers dedicated to treating the severely ill.

Nigerian dancehall artist Patoranking has partnered the African Leadership University (ALU) to launch the ALU Patoranking Scholarship Programme.




The scholarship aims to provide financial assistance to several young exceptional leaders and change makers from across Ghana and give them the tools, skill set and connections to succeed at ALU.

The idea for the collaboration was born from a conversation between Patoranking and Fred Swaniker, the founder of ALU and one of the world’s 100 most influential people, according to TIME magazine.

Patoranking recalled being accepted into the University of Cape Coast (UCC), but due to lack of funds, he wasn’t able to further his education.

He has taken it upon himself to discover and help more entrepreneurial spirits who would bring positive change to their home country and contribute to the world as a whole.




“I believe exceptional leaders and changemakers can come from anywhere. Financial constraints should not prevent the next great African innovators from gaining the tools, skill sets and networks to bring their ideas to life,” Patoranking said while speaking at a school he visited in Lagos, Nigeria.

The students chosen to be the inaugural ALU Patoranking scholars must be resilient, driven, innovative, creative, mission-driven, have demonstrated positive impact in their communities and come from a lower-income background.

Beginning the ‘Fall’ semester in September 2020, the scholarship would cover education and accommodation expenses towards ALU at either its Mauritius or Rwanda campuses.

For consideration, applicants must first apply and be admitted to ALU before applying to ALU Patoranking Scholarship. The closing date for applications is on March 17.
