This morning I woke up on the bright side, hopeful about starting my journey after NYSC.

I saw the notice about Kaduna Polytechnic and prepared myself fully. I borrowed ₦5,000 just for transport and photocopying, since they said we must bring 10 photocopies of all credentials. I printed my CV, wrote an application letter, and made 10 copies each of my NYSC certificate, statement of result, and other documents.

This was my first application after NYSC, so I gave it my all.

When I got to the Central Administrative Block, to my shock, they simply told me it was closed.

Just yesterday, there was no notice of any deadline. Today, I’m left stranded — transport wasted, photocopies wasted, money wasted.

Right now, I honestly feel depressed. I struggled to put this money together, only for everything to go down the drain without even getting the chance to submit.

Sometimes it feels like the system doesn’t care how much we struggle as young people trying to build our future.

I’m currently doing many things at the same time. I have a target for myself, but I don’t have a specific plan. The reason is that I’m not really a fan of making plans because they might change, and I don’t want to feel disappointed.

Here’s where I am right now:

Hi everyone,

I’m 24 years old, and I’ll be finishing my NYSC in August. I studied Biochemistry and graduated with a 2:1. During my service year, I worked as an administrative assistant. I’ve also done some freelance work as a blog post writer and scriptwriter, and I enjoy playing around with WordPress. I’ve written a few research papers too, and I have some basic data analysis skills.

Right now, I feel overwhelmed and confused about my next steps. I plan to apply for a graduate trainee program in a bank and work for a year while processing a scholarship for my master’s abroad. But I’ve been hearing how competitive these programs are, and I’m starting to doubt if it’ll be that easy. The reality of no more alawee is hitting hard, and the thought of going back to live with my parents is making me feel like a failure—even though I know it’s not pride.

Most of my fellow corps members have big plans, and I feel like I’m just floating. I don’t have savings, and the phone I’m using is even on credit.

Please, what advice would you give someone in my position? What should I be doing right now to stay on track and not fall behind?

Continue with your current plan until you are no longer able to or have to adjust it here or there. Take a break if you need to and get back on the path when you can.

It is quite OK if your plans don't work out since you have the freedom to make new ones or tweak the ones you once had. There is no need to get anxious about that since pretty much all of us end up having to do that like uncountable number of times throughout our lives.

So what do you advice is the way forward?

But everyone who does that is wrong! No one is a failure because they moved back home at 25, or 30, or 45, or even 50. No, failures are those who refuse to realize that to move forward, they need to take a step or more backwards to realign themselves, or even begin again or change directions.

2. If big plans are all that is needed to succeed in life, then over 170 million Nigerians today wouldn't be mired in abject poverty. You need more than big plans to succeed in Nigeria and in life.

The fact that plans are not enough is what is a scaring me. What if my plans don't materialize.

Kobojunkie:
I heard that too back in 1998 when I was in college and looking for my first job. And here I am today telling you that it is not your fault, and so you should not let it deter you from applying for jobs anyway or pushing forward with your goals.

3. You'd better swallow your pride and move back home with your parents if you need to. Even here in the United States, we all do the same when things get too hard and we need a chance to start over or something. I never understand it when people in Nigeria pretend they are too big to do what even those in advanced nations do.

It’s not pride, Sir/Ma. Everyone makes it seem like, at my age and with the fact that I’m a graduate, I’ll be a failure for going back. All my fellow corps members have big plans, and I’m just there.

The simple answer is yes. You are headed in the right direction towards your current goal.

You have a plan, and in the absence of any other, stick to it.
