The Yaba College of Technology declares 22-day holidays for elections (YABATECH) Lagos, has directed its full-time and part-time students to proceed on a 22-day holidays to enable them exercise their civic rights during next month’s general elections. This is contained in a bulletin signed by Mr Charles Oni, Head, Public Relations Unit of the college. According to the bulletin, the holidays would start from Feb. 11 and end on March 4. It also stated that hostels and lecture theatres would be under lock and key throughout the period. The bulletin quoted the rector of the college, Dr Margaret Ladipo, as appealing to the students to comport themselves during the holidays. Mixed reactions, however, trailed the announcement, as some students said the holidays would disrupt the second semester academic calendar. Others commended the management for being safety conscious and allowing students who are not resident in Lagos to travel for the elections. Miss Ronke Adeyemi, a National Diploma , Science and Laboratory Technology part-time student told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), that it was a good decision. “It is a good decision and I am happy with it. It is very risky for us to stay on campus during the elections because anything can happen. “I will use the period to read and prepare for my test because as soon as we resume in March, we are starting our test,’’ she said. Another student who pleaded anonymity, said that the holidays was too long and would deny the students the opportunity to receive enough lectures and prepare for examinations. The National Diploma Textile Technology student said that the holidays should be reduced to 10 days in the interest of the students. (NAN) #Source: Dailytrustnews |

Federal University, Oye Shut Down Indefinitely Over Staff Protest Brouhaha Erupts in Federal University, Oye Ekiti, on Monday as staff of the institution went on rampage and shut the institution to protest the alleged continuous detention of their colleagues arrested by the State Security Service. The aggrieved staff decline to simmer down despite plea from the spokesperson from the institution, Mr. Chris Ukaegbu. They also protested against alleged plot by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Isaac Asuzu, to sack some of them and arrest those who participated in the December 18, 2014 protest against him. The aggrieved staff that accused Asuzu of being behind the arrest of some of the staff by the DSS during the week ordered their colleagues in the lecture room to vacate. It was learnt that a lecturer who defied the order was rough-handled by his colleagues that saw him as a traitor. A staff, who spoke under anonymity said, “What caused the latest crisis is that, during the week, some perceived arrowhead of the December protest were arrested by men of the SSS. “Later, the Vice Chancellor used his influence to release those he believed could have a change of heart among them leaving behind those that can fight the cause of the staff. This actually angered the staff and they decided to protest for them to effect the release of their members.” But the spokesperson of the institution, Mr. Chris Ukaegbu, denied that any of the staff was in the detention of the DSS. He also denied that there were plans to sack the staff who participated in the December protest. He said, “Nobody was or has been arrested. Maybe some people felt what they have done may attract some sanctions, so they are trying to attract public sympathy. “The VC is a peace-loving man who would not intimidate anybody. There is a procedure for sacking people. Has any of them been queried on the matter?” There was heavy presence of anti-riot policemen at the main gate when our correspondent visited. Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Victor Babayemi confirmed the development but said he was yet to be properly briefed. |
