El-Rufai: “Buhari Endorsed My Exit from APC After Tinubu Used Me to Become President”

Former Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai has revealed that former President Muhammadu Buhari gave his blessing when he decided to leave the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) for the Social Democratic Party (SDP). Speaking in an interview with BBC Hausa, El-Rufai said he met with Buhari before making his decision to switch parties.
“I met with him (Buhari) on Friday and told him about my plans to leave the party,” El-Rufai explained. “I sought his blessing and prayers and told him about the new party I was joining. He gave his blessing, prayed for me, and wished me success.”

When questioned whether his decision to leave the APC stemmed from bitterness over not being appointed as a minister by President Bola Tinubu, El-Rufai denied any such motivations. He clarified that he did not lobby for a ministerial position but instead, Tinubu had personally asked him to join his government.

“Tinubu publicly begged me in Kaduna to come and work with him,” El-Rufai said. Despite this public request, the former governor added that he did not immediately agree to work with Tinubu and insisted they have a private discussion before moving forward.

During that conversation, El-Rufai recalled Tinubu’s promise to solve Nigeria’s ongoing power issues, a challenge that El-Rufai believed was crucial to the country’s development. This made El-Rufai consider joining the government, as he thought Tinubu was serious about addressing the problem.

Although El-Rufai said he does not regret supporting Tinubu’s presidential bid, he admitted feeling disappointed with how things turned out.

In response to El-Rufai’s defection, presidential spokesperson Daniel Bwala dismissed it as the result of an “inordinate ambition” to unseat President Tinubu, predicting that El-Rufai’s efforts would ultimately fail.
