I don't think this is the only PLI test if successful, who else just recieved documentation mail. please how will one go about the utility bill, have been using prepaid meter and we don't pay for nepa bill rather we buy power online. The utility bill available for me is my street security fee from January to December, can I use that instead?

When did you write the test BTW?
Jobs/Vacancies / Re: Application For GTBank Entry Level Programme by Timmylehyn(m): 5:17pm On Aug 20, 2021
Omo, that test was difficult o. 20 questions for 15 minutes. You might finish before time, but you'd definitely be tensed. There are more logical and abstract questions than arithmetic. I didn't see any verbal questions like false/incorrect types.

Just practice with logical and abstract questions.

I must say this thread has been of great help. Had my zenith bank test on the 13th of July. The test format basically is the same. Verbal which comprises of comprehension, synonyms and antonyms, Numerical questions, quantitative reasoning questions, not forgetting the Abstract segment ( that is if you're fast enough to get to this segment).
Candidates get to know their fate immediately. I'd be grateful if anyone has tips as regards the interview stages.

Hello, I planted maize on 2/ha, on April 21, and apply paraquat+ atrazine which work well, sadly Iost the maize farm due to a long break in rainfall. Now I've ploughed, and planning to repeat planting soon. Do I need to apply pre emergency herbicides again? Because some of the maize that fail to germinate during the rain break are coming up, now that rain has commenced, and don't want to lose them. Please kindly advise me.

Yes, use the pre-emergence herbicide again. Replant as you intend to. Don't count on the new maize sprouting as they may not do very well commercially. Regards.

Your theory has been proved in the book outliers. Success in life 98 percent geographical environment while the rest of the 2 percent is up to your personal effort. Imagine Bill gates being born in Somalia, a country that had no ATM until 2014. His school in the USA already had computers when everyone in Africa didnt even know what is a computer.
Outliers was an average book about great people, written for average people to be content with their average lives.

PS: I'm not replying the senseless mentions above.
Travel / Re: Destiny Can Be Destroyed By Geography. by Timmylehyn(m): 12:25am On Mar 26, 2021
This is absolute rubbish! Yes, you have greater chances of being financially better in a saner environment/country. But no, Obama didn't change the world. And Trump is a testament that being US president doesn't necessarily mean you are smart or sane even.

The Bill Gates story is a good but weak argument. Without early access to computers, the world might not have Microsoft today. Yet, you overlook the fact that Gates is an entrepreneur. Entrepreneurs solve problems. They push human race forward. The bring new and better solutions. Gates only saw the kinda solutions he could see with the problems around him. Aliko Dangote is doing exactly what Gates did. Just different industries, but they're solving the problems they see. Mukesh Ambani, Carlo Slim, and several others. The Bill Gates and computers argument is weak. If Gates was born in Nigeria, he definitely would never be one of those repairmen at Computer Village. He might have been one of the founders of the big banks (FUGAZ), a telecom entrepreneur, or a big industrialist himself.

Japa with sense!

Local farmers told me maize kills watermelon when intercropped. Dunno how true this is.

As a corp member thinking out of getting job after the service, Agriculture always comes to mind. Cassava has been where I want to start due to its resistance and available expertise (many do plant it), The land(1 hectare) is available but my though is is it really worth waiting a year for?

I know nothing is constant in agriculture but forecast is possible everywhere. Please like how much will I spend In cultivating a cassava(leaving no stone unturned)farm (1hectare)and how much is the possible return?

1. You should start applying to jobs even before NYSC. GTB graduate vacancy is presently on and applications end soon. But the positions won't be filled until after months of tests and interviews. So, start applying to jobs now.

2. I am not a Cassava grower and do not hope to be. Historically, cassava has really poor monetary value to the farmer except maybe those that are able to have yields of 30 tonnes per hectare or sth close. Most Nigerian farmers don't even have yields of 10 tons per hectare. It is usually inter-planted with maize and sometimes melon (egusi), giving the farmer more room to make more in a year on the same piece of land. In the past year tho, Cassava has been very good financially for those who grow it as you should know that the price of garri has tripled. For smallholder farmers, Cassava may be worth it because they hardly pay for labour. And it also requires less energy. But, less energy = less profits. You hardly come across big commercial farmers growing Cassava. It's just not worth their time and investment, although less risky than most crops. The Cassava space is also crowded. The supply is high whereas the demand is quite stable. In the past year, supply has been lower with stable demand which is the reason the price has gone up. Basic economics.

3. Like I said, I'm not a Cassava grower. For a youth like me, 12 months is too long to do nothing. So, I don't know much about the profits and costs, but the cost is very similar to maize which is sth I grow often. The profit isn't similar to maize tho. I wouldn't want to give you a quote here on a public platform cos it might be skewed. But we can have a chat on email or phone. Timmylehyn@gmail.com

4. You can try the Cassava and see how it goes. Just be diligent and do the right thing at the right time. Although I believe Cassava price will go down a bit again since many farmers will grow more of it because of current prices, I don't think it would go as low as previous years. But that is provided that supply doesn't massively overwhelm demand. And the higher prices also reflect the current trend in high labour and input costs.

Let's talk.

Agriculture / Re: All Crops Grown In The North Can Be Grown In The South by Timmylehyn(m): 6:32pm On Mar 16, 2021
JeAgro477:
yes the yield was far more better than that of the north both in size and number but it was not as sweet as the one I do grow in the north as of ground nut I've never seen a place where twenty five bags of ground nut was harvested from just an acre of land apart from ekiti I was shocked and one funny thing was that the farmers that grow these groundnut were so primitive that they don't believe in fertilizer application and other GAP methods
I'll like to make a request. Can you please tell us how much each. we these bags are sold for? Like the beans you quoted, how much do farmers sell the 100kg bag? Groundnut too. This would help in getting market forecast right. Also, at what period does price go up or down? Would appreciate this info.

Maybe you can put this in a new thread.

Regards

Most crops can be planted anywhere, but I'm aware from my little knowledge of science that the lands in the middle belt/to northern part are more favourable to some crops.

I dont know of the specific crops though excuse my ignorance. So I want to ask was the yield the same as that of the northern lands.
Did the water melon taste the same, the size, the number per area, etc?

Ghanians plant groundnut too but compared to what I've eaten in the north. The Ghanaian groundnut no get that groundnut taste at all. It is very similar to the one I ate when I was in oyo many years ago.. it is not delicious ra ra ra!..

Lol. That has to do with the variety of the groundnut. Some watermelons are sweeter than others, and this has nthn to do with location so far you get the fertilisation and other things right. It's about the variety.

For the OP and any other farmers who read this familiar story of crop loss to rampaging cattle herds and their armed escorts, please check out my topic devoted to offering a peaceful, and powerful means of preventing cattle from coming anywhere near your farm, using readily available ingredients.

If you don't have time to read my entire discourse on this technique, then the summary is that COW BLOOD AND BONES, bought from the slaughter house, and HIDDEN WITH GREAT CARE around your farm, will guarantee that no cows will allow themselves to be guided towards your crop, for a month or more, by which time the cow blood may require "topping up" so as to maintain a strong enough odor.

Most significantly of all, the crop destroying cattle herds are not harmed or poisoned by that smell of cow death, but they will instantly lose their appetites upon getting close enough to your crop, to pick up the scent of that WELL HIDDEN blood, whose effect is to immediate panic and stampede cattle, which can be a joy to behold, from a safe vantage point, of course.

https://www.nairaland.com/5634064/fear-cow-blood-no-stress-cow

While this is good info if it works, it may not be the solution. Some of us grow tens and hundreds of acres. How do you get cow blood for and spread throughout say 50 acres?

This issue is clearly political.

watermelon is planted ten feet apart from each other it requires a lot of space this is because planting too close discourages bigger balls and encourages Downy mildew always put 3 seeds per hole so that even if insects or wild animals destroy some of the seeds some will remain
10 feet? I think you meant 3 feet that is, 1 metre.

in developed countries where government aids farmers watermelon yields as high as 10 thousand to 12 thousand balls per acre cause farmers are always provided with all it takes to grow watermelon successfully but in nigeria where every man is for himself/herself don't expect this yield as a practical farmer I always plant 3500 to 4500 seeds per acre and I always harvest not less than 2000 to 2500 balls per acre at times it's more than that figure but let's keep it at 2500 balls we all know the prices of watermelon in the market it ranges from 500naira downward depending on the size and season but let's keep it at 150naira for each ball now if you multiply 2500*150=375000 within 65 to 75 days in my next update I will be listing and analyzing the costs of planting watermelon on an acre of land

This is very good analysis. Waiting for the cost analysis. In my experience tho, watermelon can be very profitable. One acre of watermelon can give you better gross income than one acre of Cassava, and the cost of growing the melon is lesser than the cost of growing Cassava. Plus, you sell in 10 weeks unlike a year for Cassava. But, it's very risky. I hope to plant it again sometime in the year. Is your farm located in the southwest? Mine is. What period of the year do you think is best for watermelon (for farmers who don't have drip irrigation)?

Yes I intend selling fresh and to be sincere here in south west selling fresh is not a big deal , the only problem farmers have during sales is not making proper arrangements during planting .
For me the women who roast corn are already disturbing me following the progress of the farm.
1 week to sales I will be contacting as many of them but I don't intend selling all on the same day , I normally prefer selling 1 Hectare per day or at most 2 hectares per day this helps me to create artificial scarcity during sales
Omo! See my life. Lol. I sent you a WhatsApp message. I have lots to learn. Thanks for this tip!

So today 16 Jan 2021 , some of my farm assistants helping me to wet a 4 hectare maize farm came across a hole immediately water entered the hole they saw a mother land squirrel run out of the hole and soon this 3 younger ones followed but were unfortunate as they were killed by the workers .
Although am not interested in the kill but am happy they killed cos this land squirrel are very destructive they have already removed 1/2 plot of the farm .
The uproot and eat the germinating maize and if u poison maize and pour on the floor they will not eat but once they see a germinating one they will uproot and eat the maize seed and once this happens that particular maize will not grow again.

I have a question. Do you intend selling the Mia e frehs or dried? What's the possibility of selling 4 hectares of fresh maize here in the southwest with optimum plant population?
