The biggest seaport in Nigeria named the Apapa seaport terminal is actually sited on Ijaw land. Just like Ijawra (Ijora), Idumuagbo, Kirikiri (which means land in Ijaw) and other coastal communities in Lagos. Apapa is also owed by the earliest Ijaw settlers in Lagos. Matter of fact Apapa means groundnut in Ijaw language It was named by the minority natives who were fishing there when the seaport was built to export ground nut from kano . The sea port became known as groundnut port which is apapa port.

RISE UP GREAT SONS AND DAUGHTERS OF THE IJAW NATION. YOU CAN ACHIEVE AND ALSO ATTAIN WHATEVER HEIGHT YOU SET TO ATTAIN IN LIFE Many years ago, I am very sure Multitudes wouldn't have believed that an Ijaw young man from Engenni-Ogbogolo/Ogbia Community in Ahoada West Local Government Area of Rivers State can rule the global music scene. But today it is a reality. An illustrious son of the Ijaw nation; Damini Ogulu aka Burna Boy is ruling the world with his song 'TWICE AS TALL' which won the 'BEST GLOBAL MUSIC ALBUM' in the just concluded GRAMMY AWARD yesterday. Damini Ogulu aka Burna Boy was born into a hostile, polluted, devastated and degraded Niger Delta volatile environment. Beside environmental factor, peer pressure and influence, economic pressure and other challenges that would have limited his quest for greatness were all there. But in the midst of the above, he was focused on surmounting obstacles that may pose as threats or attempt to stop him from achieving his great goals. So, it is obvious that his determination to succeed in the midst of daunting challenges helped him to conquer his environment and today, he is celebrated all over the world. As a matter of fact, the world stood still for Burna Boy yesterday being Sunday 14th March, 2021. Presidents of countries, Billionaires, captains of industry, the high and mighty including the poor and downtrodden all over the world are celebrating the unprecedented success of Burna Boy. My dear Ijaw brothers and sisters, Ijaws are like Jews. We are like endangered species. Our unimaginable and unquantifiable blessings from Almighty God has become great sources of envy, jealousy and hatred. But in the midst of the above, we must strive to succeed and to survive. We are like travelers along the river and sea whose boat capsized and if we do not swim to safety, we shall perish. We need to rise up. We are all endowed with one talent, blessing or the other outside our educational pursuit and career. We must maximize our talents to add value to ourselves and society. We do not need to waste our God given talents, skills and prowess. We must discourage crime and criminality and in their place encourage creativity, productivity and hard-work. Let us indulge in meaningful ventures that will bring honour and pride to our families and the Ijaw nation and not on dishonourable, disgraceful and embarrassing unproductive and unrewarding ventures. We want the Ijaw nation to produce more Dr. Goodluck Jonathan GCFR, Prof. John Pepper Clark, Prof. Gabriel Okara, Prof. E.J. Alagoa, Timaya, Timi Dakolo, Diezani Allison-Madueke, Amb. Dr. Godknows Boladei Igali, Damini Ogulu aka Burna Boy, Barr. Blessing Ebizi Eradiri, Nengi Rebecca Hampson, Samson Siasia, Daniel Igali, Finidi George and others who are doing well in their various fields of endeavours. Congratulations once again to Damini Ogulu aka Burna Boy the worthy Ambassador of the Ijaw nation in the Music and Entertainment Industry that is ruling the global music scene. We love and cherish you Burna Boy. This is just the beginning of greater blessings to come. ~~~ Most Senior Comrade Wisdom Oniekpar Ikuli Mirror and Conscience of Society. * Former National Director of Mobilization & Chairman, Action Committee Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) Worldwide * Former Acting President Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) Worldwide * Executive Director Centre for Peace Advocacy and Social Rehabilitation (CPASR) * National President Niger Delta Nonviolence Agitators Forum (NDNAF)
