I was exactly in this scenario months ago. When i tried to recover i was told someone on a cheap phone is the one using the account. The more i tried to reset code, the more whatsapp kept preventing me me from doing so untill I was told I could only reset the whatsapp code in the next one month. That is how i switched fully to another line.
For the hacking to be possible, it is obvious the sim was cloned and it got the code to log me out of my device and into his device. The guy used the opportunity to try and scam alot of my contacts but glad no one fell.
