Nigeria is the third-largest debtor to the World Bank’s International Development Association as of June 30, 2024, following a significant increase in its borrowing from the institution.

A financial statement dated June 30 2024 but recently made public and obtained by our correspondent on Tuesday disclosed this.

The IDA, a key arm of the World Bank, provides concessional loans and grants to the world’s poorest countries. These loans, characterised by low interest rates and extended repayment periods, are designed to promote economic growth, reduce inequalities, and improve living conditions in developing nations.

According to the World Bank’s latest financial statements, Nigeria’s exposure to the IDA surged by 14.4 per cent, rising from $14.3bn in fiscal year 2023 to $16.5bn in fiscal year 2024.

This $2.2bn increase marks Nigeria’s first appearance among the top three IDA debtors, up from its previous position as the fourth-largest borrower in 2023.

During the fiscal year from July 2023 to June 2024, Nigeria received at least $2.2bn in new loans from the IDA under the administration of President Bola Tinubu.

Nairaland GeneralRetirees Receive N500 Monthly Pension by Trendburst(op): 11:51am On Sep 02, 2024
Alhassan Musa, described the situation as “pathetic,” highlighting the struggles faced by retirees who had sacrificed their lives and services for the nation.
The Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) has lamented the deplorable conditions of public sector retirees in the country, citing woeful monthly pension payouts of as little as N500. The union’s secretary in Kaduna State, Alhassan Musa, described the situation as “pathetic,” highlighting the struggles faced by retirees who had sacrificed their lives and services for the nation.

According to Musa, the worst affected are pensioners in Southern and oil-producing states, despite receiving substantial allocations from the federation account. In contrast, pensioners in some Northern states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) are receiving between N3,500 and N18,000 monthly pensions.

However, Musa noted that pensioners in Kaduna State are a rare exception, with a minimum pension of N30,000 per month implemented by the state government in 2020. The union is now pushing for a 50% increase in pension payouts, aligning with the new national minimum wage of N70,000.

Car TalkUber Will Add Driverless Cruise Vehicles To Its Fleet In 2025 by Trendburst(op): 6:02pm On Aug 27, 2024
After losing its California operating license last year over safety concerns, the autonomous vehicle company Cruise will soon partner with Uber to offer driverless transportation through the popular ride-hail app.

Cruise and Uber announced a multiyear partnership that will begin in 2025 and allow Uber customers to select a driverless Cruise vehicle for qualified trips. The partnership will begin in a single, unspecified city and will rely on Chevy Bolt-based autonomous vehicles.

Cruise idled its entire fleet in October after California regulators revoked the company’s license to provide driverless rides, alleging that the company mishandled a safety incident in which a pedestrian was struck and dragged by a Cruise vehicle in San Francisco.

The pedestrian, who was in the street after being struck by a car with a driver, was pinned under a Cruise vehicle and sent to the hospital with injuries. In 2018, a self-driving vehicle from Uber hit and killed a pedestrian in Arizona, causing the company to halt its driverless program in several cities. >>> more detail below

PoliticsOlumide Akpata: Edo PDP Government Wicked And Irresponsible by Trendburst(op): 3:54pm On Aug 27, 2024
During an interview with ARISE NEWS on Tuesday, the governorship candidate of the Labour Party in Edo state, Olumide Akpata launched a stinging criticism of the current People’s Democratic Party (PDP) government in Edo State, labelling it as “wicked and irresponsible.”
He made these remarks while speaking about the lessons he has learned in the course of dabbling into politics from commercial law. The Labour Party gubernatorial candidate was previously president of the Nigerian Bar Association.

Akpata said, “What I have learnt is that our government is wicked, irresponsible and I’m referring particularly to the current PDP government in Edo state and it’s quite disappointing because the individuals who run Edo state came from the private sector like I did.

“The lessons that have been reinforced is that everything rises and falls on leadership. It is the absence of leadership that has put us where we are. We have been victims of irresponsible leadership.”

Akpata also took issue with claims by PDP governorship candidate in Edo State, Asue Ighodalo, that there are improvements in the education sector, dismissing them as misleading. He said, “Asue mentioned yesterday, the schools are great, the teachers have tabs. That’s a joke. You can’t pick one or two schools in Benin city and tell me that is reflective of the reality in Edo state.”

Further speaking, he positioned the Labour Party as a beacon of hope for Edo state, asserting that his party is prepared to provide the leadership that the state desperately needs.

Ukraine says it’s seized nearly 600 Russian POWs in Kursk attack

He said, “The classic definition of democracy has ‘people’ mentioned three times, for good reason, but you have governments over time that have totally taken the people out of the equation. That is my problem, that leadership is the issue. For me, we need to take charge. A leader must take charge. A leader must understand that you are there to serve the people. I have gone round Edo state five times now and it is the same story across the state. Our leaders have abdicated.

“It’s about leadership and Labour Party is here to provide leadership and the people know this.”

CrimeDeath Of Female Participant At Burning Man 2024 Under Investigation by Trendburst(op): 2:03pm On Aug 26, 2024
A female participant died on the first day of the 2024 Burning Man Festival in Nevada’s Black Rock Desert on Sunday, the event and local authorities announced.

Burning Man emergency service personnel responded to a report of an unresponsive individual at 11:29 a.m in Black Rock City, the Burning Man Project said in a news release. Life saving measures were “attempted but were unsuccessful,” officials said. Black Rock City is a temporary city erected for the annual festival.

The Pershing County Sheriff’s Office said it was notified about “the potential death” of a participant at 11:37 a.m. Sunday by the festival and deputies responded and confirmed the death of a female participant.

The participant’s name and age were not released pending next of kin notification. The death is under investigation pending autopsy results to determine the cause and manner of death.

“Our thoughts and condolences go out to the family and friends affected by this loss,” the Burning Man Project said. The event said support is available to festival participants including peer support services at Black Rock Rangers headquarters and outposts, and via Black Rock City’s Emergency Services Department’s Crisis Support team.

“The safety and well-being of our staff and community are paramount,” the festival said. “We are cooperating fully with local authorities as they investigate this incident. The Pershing County Sheriff’s office investigates all deaths that occur in its jurisdiction.”

It comes after the festival temporarily closed gates to the event early Saturday due to rain for about 12 hours.

Last year, 32-year-old festival-goer Leon Reece, 32, of Truckee, California died after he was found unresponsive on the festival grounds, authorities said. Drug intoxication was suspected in his death, a coroner’s office said in September.

Nairaland GeneralPersistent Traffic Gridlock Intensifies Hardship For Lagosians by Trendburst(op): 10:11pm On Aug 24, 2024
Every day, 27-year-old Adisa Olawale, a marketing executive living in Lagos, rises at 5:00 a.m., well before the city fully awakens. The early start is a necessity, not a choice, as he prepares for the daily challenge of navigating through Lagos’s notorious traffic.

Adisa’s journey takes him from his home in Ojodu Berger, a bustling suburb, to Victoria Island, the heart of Lagos’s business district.

The trip, which ideally should take about 45 minutes, often stretches into a two-hour ordeal. As he drives through the quiet streets of Ojodu, the commute starts smoothly, but as soon as he hits the Berger-Oworonshoki Expressway, traffic grinds to a halt.

The highway, packed with cars, buses, and motorcycles, becomes a sea of frustration. Adisa braces himself for the familiar struggle—an hour of inching forward, surrounded by honking horns and thick exhaust fumes.

The gridlock turns into a marketplace, with street vendors selling everything from snacks to phone accessories. Adisa sometimes buys plantain chips, not out of hunger, but to break the monotony of the endless wait.

By the time he reaches his office, the day has only just begun, but the traffic has already drained his energy. He sits at his desk, battling fatigue, knowing that the evening will bring another round of the same exhausting commute.

Also read: Sancho Must Compete For His Position –Ten Hag

Adisa’s story is far from unique. Millions of Lagosians endure this daily grind, navigating a city where traffic, coupled with a rising cost of living, is a test of both patience and resilience.

The traffic congestion in Lagos is exacerbated by the city’s rapid urbanisation and inadequate infrastructure.

The increasing number of vehicles on the roads, (1.6 million vehicles ply Lagos roads on a daily basis according to an official data in 2019), coupled with the limited capacity of the existing road network, has led to severe traffic congestion.

Judge Greg Mathis and his wife, Linda Yvette Mathis, are parting ways after almost four decades together.

Linda Mathis filed for divorce from the “Judge Mathis” star Thursday in Los Angeles County Superior Court, citing “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for the split, according to court documents reviewed by The Times.

In the filing, she listed their date of separation as July 17 and noted that they have no minor children. She also applied for spousal support while asking that the court waive her husband’s right to request support from her. It is unclear whether the couple had a prenuptial agreement in place.

She also requested that Greg Mathis cover her legal fees.
