During the time of Obj there was even more opposition and competition than what we see now. We had the PDP governors then, many of whom were divided between him and Atiku, of course there was the influence of Dr Odili whom many even thought would be presidential candidate because of how he toured the country and even won over the entire North. Atiku was also a big force before he decamped and of course the national assembly who largely opposed Obj (even his fellow PDP lawmakers then opposed him bitterly and at a point wanted to impeach him). In all these Obj kept quiet and only announced Yar'ardua as his anointed few Days to the PDP primaries and every other candidate fell in line with the C in C's wish.
In APC today, Buhari's wish is more like the alpha and Omega. Trust me once Buhari makes his choice known, everyone will fall in line. Those who don't like it would most likely decamp, like I foresee Tinubu doing. You can't fight against a sitting president in his party and survive, even the national chairman cannot.
