A breakdown of the newly commissioned cadet officers on geo-political basis revealed that 165 are from the North-west, about four times as many as those who were picked from the South-south (42).

The figures for the other other zones are North-east 100, North-central 66, South-west 57 and South-east 44.

This means that while 331 of the newly commissioned officers are from the 19 northern states and the FCT, less than half of the total intakes were from states in the southern part of Nigeria. See table and charts below for slots allocated to each state.

ABUJA-President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday failed to worship at the Presidential Villa, Abuja mosque. The reason for his absence was not known as at press time.

However Governors Ibikunle Amosun (Ogun State); Abdulaziz Yari (Zamfara State) and Abdulahi Ganduje (Kano State) were amongst those that worshiped at the Villa Mosque.

Yesterday Aso Villa has assured Nigerians that there is no need for apprehension over the health of our President, Muhammadu Buhari, despite concerns being raised in the media.

Education / UNN To Produce Laptops At New Tech Incubation Hub by TSS123: 5:30pm On Apr 27, 2017
The University of Nigeria, Nsukka(UNN) will soon be producing laptops and tractors at it new science and technology incubator called “Roar Nigeria Hub”.

The hub, which is embedded in the university, is the first of its kind in West Africa.
The launching was a dream come true for Professor Benjamin Ozumba, the Vice-Chancellor, who after visiting a science park in Sweden in 2016, vowed to establish same in the University of Nigeria.
“We want to turn Nigeria around with inventions and innovations” Ozumba said that “very soon; you will hear about students of UNN making laudable inventions in ICT and other fields of life”.
Ozumba took the first step of ensuring that students of the university are IT compliant in 2015 when he mandated that every student of the university must own a laptop computer in order to meet the demands of the 21st century tertiary education.
Although the policy attracted mixed reactions leading to the removal of the compulsory clause, Ozumba however believes that the university has the capacity to assemble its own laptop.
“In the next few months, made in UNN laptops will flood Nigerian market, this is the first mandate of Roar Nigeria Hub”, he said.
Laptops will not be the only products of the hub; the Vice-Chancellor said the university would soon start assembling tractors for agricultural use.
He challenged the Roar Nigeria Hub to come up with innovations that would curtail wastage of agricultural produce in the country.
Borne out of collaboration between the university and the Benefiting Our Community (BOG) Innovations, Roar Nigeria aims to produce new generation of innovators that will provide local technology-based solutions with global perspective.
The hub is built on the concept of triple helix, which is an interaction between the academia, the industry and the government to promote ideas, and marketable innovations among students and researchers.
The launching of Roar Nigeria Hub attracted foremost IT companies, including Google, Facebook, Huawei Technologies, Nigeria Communication Commission (NCC), National Information Technology Agency (NITDA), Computer Warehouse Group, and Exxon Mobil.
The mood of the event was set by an emotional opening prayers said by Professor Patience Osadebe, the Dean, School of Postgraduate Studies of the university.
The Professor pleaded with God to cast away the spirit of consumerism from Nigerians and grant the citizens the wisdom to be productive. “We are tired of benefiting from food is ready” Osadebe prayed God to “help us cook our own food for others to eat”.
Osadebe’s prayer was echoed by the Governor of Enugu State, Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuaanyi, who in his address noted that Nigeria would not attend the desired level of development if it continues to rely on technologies produced by other nations.
The governor, who was represented by the Enugu State Commissioner for Science and Technology, Engineer Greg Nnaji, said the concept of the hub was in line with the effort of the government to entrench information technology culture in the society to boost economic development and produce employment for the youths.
“By establishing this facility” the governor said that the “University of Nigeria, Nsukka has once again demonstrated its willingness and capacity to take up the challenge to deliver scientific and technological breakthroughs, which, with the support of the private sector, would impact on the economic fortunes of the nation”
Part of the promises of the hub, is to assist young innovators secure funds to set their ideas in motion; provide mentorship to young innovators, and support innovative ideas into marketable products.

“Roar Nigeria Hub is an ecosystem that supports upcoming entrepreneurs by providing professional support to enable the young minds convert their ideas to marketable products” said the Chairman/Director of Roar Nigeria, Okechi Igwebuike. He noted that the hub would enable the creation of indigenous solutions, jobs and economic growth within its environment.

Igwebuike said the initiative was private sector driven would be taken to other universities across the country.
The hub started on a good note with three innovative groups presenting their proposals.
The first group called “AGROMESS” developed an app that will help farmers solve the problem of wastage of agricultural products. The app will help identify parts of the country that have surplus agro products and link them to areas where the products are scarce.
The second group called “Malicha” developed a mobile app that uses artificial intelligence to recommend hairstyle that will fit a particular facial make-up.
The third group called “Thrillers” developed an app that will notify people of events happening around them in their mobile phones. All the proposals were made by students of the University of Nigeria

Tension is high in Neke and surrounding communities in Isi-Uzo local government area of Enugu State over the reported invasion of the area by suspected Fulani hersmen.

DAILY POST learnt that the herdsmen, who stormed the border communities with sophisticated weapons, continued sporadic shootings from Monday night up till Tuesday.

The situation has thrown residents into panic and anxiety with residents reportedly fleeing the area.

As of the time of filing this report, it is still unclear if casualties have been recorded in the attack.

A native of Neke community, Mr. Chidi Odoh, who confirmed the shootings to journalists, said it‎ started since Monday night at Ndiagu Umuegwu, an area between Neke and Obollo communities.

“I even heard the gunshots not more than five minutes ago. They have been shooting there since last night but our people have mobilized to go there,” Odoh said.

The Security Adviser to Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, Gen. Fred Eze (rtd) however, said the situation was not as bad, based on the interim report he received.

Eze said it maybe herdsmen moving from the North to Ebonyi State, adding that he has mobilized both the army and the divisional police office at Ikem to the scene.

He said: “Based‎ on the interim report before me, there is no cause for alarm and security operatives have been dispatched to the area. I even spoke with the leader of heardmen in Isi-Uzo who told me he directed the herdsmen to leave Neke.

“I am also aware that Neke community has not had issues with herdsmen earlier than now and so the situation is being monitored.”

Also, the Caretaker committee Vice Chairman of Isi-Uzo local government, Engr. Samuel Ugwede stated that they were moving with security personnel to the area.

The development is coming few days after residents of Ndiagu-Umunafor, Mburubu, in Nkanu-East Council Area of the State, raised the alarm about the movement of armed herdsmen in their community.

It was gathered that the herdsmen, who are reportedly possessing dangerous weapons, took over farms in the community, destroying farm crops.

Foreign Affairs / U.S. Moves THAAD Anti-missile To South Korea by TSS123: 8:02am On Apr 26, 2017
The U.S. military started moving parts of its controversial THAAD anti-missile defense system to a deployment site in South Korea on Wednesday amid high tensions over North Korea’s missile and nuclear programs.

The earlier-than-expected move prompted protests by hundreds of local residents and was denounced by the frontrunner in South Korea’s presidential election on May 9.

A spokesman for Moon Jae-in said the decision “ignored public opinion and due process” and demanded the deployment be suspended until the next administration was in place and had made its policy decision.

The United States and South Korea last year agreed to deploy the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system to counter the threat of missile launches by North Korea. However the move has angered China, which says the advanced system will do little to deter the North while destabilizing the regional security balance.

South Korea’s defense ministry said some elements of THAAD were moved to the site on what had been a golf course in the south of the country.

“South Korea and the United States have been working to secure an early operational capability of the THAAD system in response to North Korea’s advancing nuclear and missile threat,” the ministry said in a statement. The battery is expected to be operational by the end of the year, it added.

Television footage showed military trailers carrying large units including what appeared to be launch canisters being driven into the planned THAAD battery site, about 250 km (155 miles) south of Seoul. Images showed local protesters hurling water bottles at the vehicles and police trying to block them.

The Pentagon said the deployment was a critical measure to defend South Korea and its allies against North Korean missile threats and it would complete it “as soon as feasible”.

The U.S. and South Korean militaries have been reluctant to publicly discuss the progress of the deployment ahead of the South Korean presidential election.

Moon, the favorite to win the race, has said the new South Korean administration should decide on whether to deploy the THAAD after gathering public opinions and having further discussions with Washington.

PROTESTS

More than 10 protesters were injured during clashes with police and some of them had bone fractures, Kim Jong-kyung, co-head of a group of villagers protesting the THAAD deployment, told Reuters. Kim said about 200 protesters, mostly residents in two towns near the battery site, rallied overnight and would remain near the location.

“We will continue our fight and there’s still time for THAAD to be actually up and running so we will fight until equipment is withdrawn from the site and ask South Korea’s new government to reconsider the plan,” Kim told Reuters by telephone.

A police official in Seongju, a town where THAAD is located, said police had pulled out from the location, and was unaware of the report on the injuries.

Washington and Pyongyang have been ratcheting up pressure on each other in recent weeks, with the United States sending a aircraft carrier group and nuclear submarine to the region and North Korea attempting more missile launches in defiance of layers of U.N. sanctions.

North Korea’s KCNA news agency said on Wednesday leader Kim Jong Un had supervised the country’s “largest-ever” live-fire drill to mark the 85th founding anniversary of its military, with more than 300 large-caliber, self-propelled artillery guns demonstrating their fire power at an event on its east coast.

The drill came instead of a nuclear test or the launch of a long-range missile as feared amid pressure from the United States and China, its sole major ally which has been irritated by Pyongyang’s weapons development.

“The brave artillerymen mercilessly and satisfactorily hit the targets and the gunshots were very correct, he said, adding that they showed well the volley of gunfire of our a-match-for-a-hundred artillery force giving merciless punishment to the hostile forces,” KCNA said.

A U.S. submarine designed to carry 150 Tomahawk cruise missiles entered a South Korean port on Tuesday as the USS Carl Vinson carrier group steamed towards the Korean waters in an effort to deter the North from a sixth nuclear test and more missile launches.

South Korea’s navy has said it plans to hold a joint drill with the U.S. strike group late this month.

U.S. President Donald Trump has vowed to prevent the North from being able to hit the United States with a nuclear missile and has said all options are on the table.

The United States began moving the first elements of the advanced missile defense system into South Korea in early March after the North test-launched four ballistic missiles.

Seoul and Washington say the sole purpose of THAAD is to defend against North Korean missiles, but China is concerned the system’s powerful radar can penetrate its territory and undermine its security.

South Korea accuses China of discriminating against some South Korean companies operating in China because of the THAAD deployment.

Politics / Nnamdi Kalu May Reject Bail Conditions by TSS123: 4:56pm On Apr 25, 2017
http://regulusnewsonline.com/2017/04/25/nnamdi-kalu-may-reject-bail-conditions/

A Federal High Court in Abuja on Tuesday granted bail to the leader of Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, on health grounds.

This has come as cheering news to many Nigerians as it’s currently trending on twitter.

However, a close look at the bail conditions indicates a prison away from the confines of Kuje prison walls.

The reason for granting Nnamdi Kanu bail according to the presiding judge is on health ground.

“Justice Nyako noted that she had observed that Kanu always had to sit down in the dock whenever he appeared in court, a development which she said could be an indication that he could be suffering from an ailment that could not be treated in prison.”

One would have expected a bail granted on “health ground” to be such that reflects the observation of the presiding judge, she notwithstanding, granted ‘sick Kanu’ bail in the sum of N100m with three sureties in like sums.

The judge also ordered that one of the sureties to be provided by the defendant must be a highly placed person such as a senator.

Kanu, having identified with Judaism, She directed that the other must be a highly recognized leader in the religion being practised by Kanu (Judaism).

The third surety, according to the judge, must be a resident of Abuja and who must have a landed property in the Federal Capital Territory.

The judge also gave a stern warning to the defendant not to participate in any rally or be found in a crowd of more than 10 persons in the course of the bail.

The judge would have simply spared Nigerians this unnecessary sensational Bail granting ruling by simply requesting that the accused be taken to the hospital by the prison officials to be treated and returned to Kuje.

This conditions if accepted by Nnamdi Kanu will possibly put him where the FG will have opportunity to further press more charges against him.

How can you release a figure like Nnamdi Kanu and demand he not engage or participate in any gathering of more than ten persons.

The judge should have seen such conditions broken right from the moment he exit the chambers, going by the number of followers who besieged the venue of the ruling, let alone the mammon crowd that awaits his arrival if at all FG allows his exit from Kuje prison.

Recall that The Leader of the indigenous People of Biafra IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu was granted bail On December 17, 2015, by Justice Adeniyi Ademola.

Adeniyi Ademola, a judge of the Federal High Court ordered Kanu’s unconditional release, a judgement FG did not obey till date.

This kind of bail condition must be condemned by all peace loving Nigerians as it will possibly put in motion the process for Kanu’s further conviction.

Killing of Nigerians anywhere is condemnable, thus, any action which will give our trigger happy Nigerian security personnel the avenue to use live bullets on protesting Nigerians must be avoided.

It will also be in the interest of Nnamdi Kanu and his followers for him to reconsider this bail conditions if it will indeed be beneficial.
