Samsung unveiled its two new flagship phones Sunday at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. The smartphones look very similar to the Galaxy S6 line, but offer an array of features and improvements that are truly impressive. The S7 will have a 5.1-inch screen while the S7 Edge will boast a 5.5-inch screen. They will both pack a 12-megapixel rear-facing camera and a 5- megapixel front-facing camera. Samsung claims the camera is better than the iPhone 6S, since it focuses better and can take better night scene photos. The two phones will also have a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor and a larger battery that Samsung says will let users watch a whole season of "Game of Thrones" in one sitting. The S7 and S7 Edge will also have wireless charging. The new processor and battery will also let users play more games with high graphics. Samsung introduced "Game Mode," which will use the hardware to optimize the screen and allow for longer game play without any interruptions. However, the two most notable features are water resistance and expandable memory. Both the S7 and S7 Edge can be submerged in five feet of water for up to 13 minutes — no other smartphone can do that. The phones also have a microSD slot for additional storage, which means that the 32GB internal memory can easily become 160GB with a 128GB memory card. Samsung will launch both phones on March 11 with all four major U.S. carriers. They will be available in Gold Platinum, Black Onyx, Single Titanium and White Pearl. Those who preorder either phone will get a free Gear VR headset, which usually costs $100. Pricing has yet to be announced, but Samsung said to expect similar prices as last year's S6 line. So, don't expect the S7 and S7 Edge to come cheap. Based on last year's prices, they'll probably cost $600 to $800. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vr72vVo0PqQ |

5G mobile network AT&T Testing Superfast 5G Mobile Network AT&T announced plans Friday to begin testing a superfast fifth generation, or 5G, mobile network with speeds up to 100 times faster than the most rapid existing connections. The US telecom group said it would begin the field tests later this year in collaboration with US semiconductor giant Intel and Swedish networking group Ericsson. Global telecom operators are readying for 5G deployment in 2020 but some carriers appear to be moving ahead of schedule. The new 5G networks could open up a range of services by delivering data at much faster speeds, enabling services such as remote surgery or driverless cars and allowing customers to experience video and virtual reality with ease. “New experiences like virtual reality, self-driving cars, robotics, smart cities and more are about to test networks like never before,” said AT&T chief strategy officer John Donovan. “These technologies will be immersive, pervasive and responsive to customers. 5G will help make them a reality.” AT&T said it would begin lab tests of 5G starting in the second quarter and outdoor tests in Austin, Texas, before the end of the year. “The trials will help guide our 5G standards contributions, and set the stage for widespread commercial and mobile availability once technology standards for 5G are established,” AT&T said. “We expect 5G to deliver speeds 10-100 times faster than today’s average 4G LTE connections.” US rival carrier Verizon has also announced plans for 5G testing in 2016. The International Telecommunication Union, a UN agency which works on interconnection among global carriers, said its member countries had approved a plan detailing how to harmonize standards for 5G, with the rollout expected for 2020. __________________ |

ERROR 53 FIXES |
Apple today released an updated version of iOS 9.2.1, exclusively available to those who use Apple's latest iPhones and iPads. The second iOS 9.2.1 update comes approximately one month after iOS 9.2.1 was first released to the public. Apple has launched the new version of iOS 9.2.1 to address the "error 53" message that some iOS users received after having their iPhones repaired by third-party services using components not sourced from the original device. These non-matching components cause the iPhone to fail a Touch ID validation check because the mismatched parts cannot properly sync. When the Touch ID validation check failed during an iOS update or restore, Apple disabled the iPhone, effectively "bricking" it in an effort to protect Touch ID and the related Secure Enclave that stores customer fingerprint information. Apple originally explained that error 53 was intentional, implemented as a way to prevent the use of a malicious Touch ID sensor that could be used to gain access to the Secure Enclave, but customers with bricked devices were not happy with the explanation and Apple found itself facing a class-action lawsuit. Today's update will restore iPhones and iPads that have been disabled due to "error 53" to full working condition and it will ensure that future iPhones that have had similar repairs will not be fully disabled. Touch ID will not, however, be accessible. Alongside the new version of iOS 9.2.1, Apple has also published a support document outlining how customers can resolve the "error 53" problem, and it has issued an apology, shared by TechCrunch. " Quote: Some customers' devices are showing 'Connect to iTunes' after attempting an iOS update or a restore from iTunes on a Mac or PC. This reports as an Error 53 in iTunes and appears when a device fails a security test. This test was designed to check whether Touch ID works properly before the device leaves the factory. Today, Apple released a software update that allows customers who have encountered this error message to successfully restore their device using iTunes on a Mac or PC. We apologize for any inconvenience, this was designed to be a factory test and was not intended to affect customers. Customers who paid for an out-of-warranty replacement of their device based on this issue should contact AppleCare about a reimbursement." The updated version of iOS 9.2.1 is available through iTunes and is not designed for customers who update their devices over the air. It can be downloaded on the iPhone 6, 6s, 6 Plus, 6s Plus, iPad mini 3, iPad mini 4, iPad Air 2, and iPad Pro. http://www.macrumors.com/2016/02/18/apple-ios-9-2-1-error-53-fix/ |
