Cocoa prices seem to be coming under renewed pressure with supply growth expected in key producing states, with Nigeria indicating remarkable signs of improvement. Nigeria is fourth-largest cocoa producer in the world, dealing with difficulties as aging trees, pest infestations, and logistical bottlenecks, all of which has led to reduced production output in recent years. Good weather conditions combined with government initiatives to revitalize cocoa farms are beginning to show positive results. Key Indicators Government-Led Initiatives: The Nigerian government has set up programs to back cocoa farmers through the spread of high-yield seedlings and the offer of low-interest loans. These are targeted to boost productivity and maintain sustainable growth in the industries. Increased International Demand: In spite of supply overview, international demand for cocoa maintains robustness, with high consumption in emerging markets a key contributor and the ubiquity of dark chocolate in developed economies. The International Cocoa Organization (ICCO) estimates global cocoa demand to grow by 2-3% annually over the next five years. Increased Output: Cocoa production in the country is expected to rise by 10-15% in the 2024/25 season, reaching approximately 280,000-300,000 metric tons, up from around 250,000 metric tons in the previous season. This increase is driven by improved farming initiatives and greater access to fertilizers and pesticides. International Cocoa Prices: In the last quarter Cocoa prices globally have declined by 8-10%, trading at approximately $2,800 per metric ton as of March 2025, down from $3,100 per metric ton towards the end 2024. This reduction points to expected surge in supply from West Africa - Nigeria and Ivory Coast. Export Earnings: Nigeria earned approximately $1.2 billion from cocoa exports in 2024, contributing significantly to the country's non-oil export revenue. With the projected increase in output, export revenue is expected to grow by 5-7% in 2025. Challenges With positive supply projections Nigeria still faces issues like climate change, unpredictable global prices, and infrastructure deficits in Nigeria's cocoa-producing states could hamper growth over time. Farmers and stakeholders are demanding for investment in key variables like storages, transportation channels, and value-added processing to maximize the sector's potential. Nigeria's cocoa industry is poised for a return to form, adding to a more balanced global supply-demand dynamic. However, consistent efforts are needed to meet structural issues and take advantage of the current rise in demand for cocoa products.
