Sony is taking a risky bet by entering the handheld console market again, following the commercial failure of the PlayStation Vita. However, the Japanese firm plans to adopt a new strategy with the Q Lite console. The machine is not entirely portable but instead based on Remote Play technology that Sony has been trying to develop in recent times. The Q Lite will still rely on the PS5 to work. And will be capable of streaming games at up to 60 frames per second in 1080p. It comes with an 8-inch LCD touchscreen and controls similar to those of the DualSense.

While the announcement of the ASUS ROG Ally has revived news in the portable console market, Sony is also making a significant move. According to Tom Henderson via Insider Gaming, the Q Lite is still in the quality test phase. And its marketing could be launched between that of the PS5 Slim and PS5 Pro. However, the relevance of the Q Lite console is questionable, given what it offers. And it could suffer the same fate as Logitech G Cloud and PS VR2. An official announcement from Sony is expected on the occasion of a possible PlayStation Showcase in June.

It is worth noting that the handheld console market has not been as popular in recent years due to the rise of mobile gaming. Smartphones and tablets have become the go-to devices for casual gamers. And this has resulted in a decline in the demand for dedicated handheld consoles. However, there is still a niche market for handheld consoles. And Sony is hoping to tap into that market with the Q Lite.

Furthermore, Sony has a history of success in the console market with their PlayStation brand. And they have a loyal fan base that will likely buy the Q Lite. If Sony can deliver on the promises of the Q Lite, it could be a successful addition to their lineup of gaming devices. However, his latest announcement was vaguer, stating that Sony was working on a new type of hardware that has not been the subject of rumors or announcements until now. This ruled out revisions to the PS5 as well as any future console wireless headphones. Fans then speculated about a new PlayStation portable console.

Another journalist, Jeff Grubb, heard rumors about a portable console dedicated to cloud gaming. Which is a recent idea on the market. This console would offer a physical controller, a screen, and an internet connection for game streaming. But without the computing power necessary to run games natively offline on the device. To promote its PlayStation Plus Premium, which provides access to a catalog of streaming PlayStation 4 games, Sony could develop a new device in its ecosystem alongside the PS5 and PS VR2. Such a device could also play “Remote Play” from a local console.

In summary, there are two rumors about Sony’s portable console. One suggests a PlayStation 5 accessory that uses remote play function and the other suggests a dedicated cloud gaming console. A PlayStation Vita 2 or Sony INZONE handheld gaming computer could be released at some point in 2023. In addition, it has been mentioned that this Sony handheld will turn up before the much-rumored PlayStation 5 Pro console. Interestingly, a prediction that a PlayStation 5 Portable device would hit the shelves this year was made back in 2017.

While there are a couple of PlayStation Portable rumors often floating around, usually they have less substance than oxygen. However, a couple of recent mentions of a Sony handheld or new Sony hardware have sparked life into the discussion, with fans wondering if a PS Vita 2 could finally be on the cards. It is unclear whether Sony might offer up a successor to its much-loved PlayStation Vita console that was discontinued in 2019 or perhaps produce something to go in its INZONE gaming repertoire. There’s even a chance that the new hardware could be a PS5 Portable, although it would have to be a much cutdown variant of the larger device otherwise it would cost a fortune and likely toast a few hands in the process.

Murmurings about this potential new Sony handheld have come via Reddit and tech insider Tom Henderson. Whereas Henderson simply states “a new piece of Sony hardware” is coming in a recent streaming session on YouTube, the redditor u/remy2fly goes all out with the comment “Asus employee aware of Sony handheld secretly being worked on”. So, while Henderson could have been referring to a new monitor or headset, the Reddit thread (a discussion about the new Asus ROG Ally handheld) offers a more specific direction: PlayStation Vita 2 incoming? Of course, it’s not obvious how Sony would approach this development, whether it would produce something akin to the Steam Deck for the INZONE line or come up with something more spectacular that would offer at least native PS4 gaming.

There are two more interesting takeaways to be had here, as well. Firstly, Henderson also reckons this new hardware from Sony will turn up before the PS5 Pro, which could be this year. He comments that he will know more about the PS5 Pro over the next few months, so if this is a PlayStation portable device of some sort that is coming then fans have every right to feel a soupçon of excitement. In addition, back in mid-2020 we reported on a prediction made by Goldman Sachs in regard to Sony’s gaming hardware. The financial services company predicted back in 2017 that the PlayStation 5 would come in 2020 (correct) and that a PlayStation 5 Portable would land in 2023. There was also a timeframe for the PlayStation 6 listed, with 2027 given as the year of release (although 2028 seems more likely at the moment).

As far as what is coming from Sony, the company is working on a new model of the PlayStation 5. The newest model could be a long-anticipated PS5 Pro with a release in 2024. The company has also been working on a version of the PS5 with similar hardware, but would feature a detachable disc drive.

Sony has yet to make any statement about a new handheld device.
