Buhari or whatever your name is...should not try anything stupid if he doesn’t want war in this country

The Coalition of United Political Parties on Saturday alleged that President Muhammadu Buhari is planning to suspend the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Mahmood Yakubu. Ugochinyere claimed the President was planning to name a National Commissioner, Amina Zakari, as the Acting Chairman, citing her experience as the oldest and most experienced National Commissioner. The coalition made the allegation in a statement made available to journalists by its spokesman, Imo Ugochinyere. Ugochinyere said, “The President is planning to use the excuse of inability to hold election today (Saturday) as a reason for the imminent suspension. ” Feigning ignorance of the real reasons behind the shift, the President in his earlier statement today did not have just a word for the shameful and despicable actions of security forces and the Central Bank’s staff who in obedience to Presidency’s directives deliberately sabotaged the distribution of sensitive materials in selected states. “We are aware that his hurried return to Abuja today from his home state, Katsina is to sack the INEC boss. But this should be resisted by all well-meaning Nigerians and the international community. “The sin of the INEC Chairman is that he refused to conduct staggered elections that will allow the President and his men to manipulate the process. “The Presidency had mounted pressure on the commission to conduct election today in states where there were no issues and postpone only the states with materials distribution issues. “The INEC Chairman insisted on conducting the election at the same time hence warranting the postponement of the entire election. “We hereby warn President Buhari that the position of the INEC Chairman is independent, hence, he cannot be removed from office via suspension. The 1999 Constitution in Section 157(1) states that the Chairman and members of the Commission may only be removed by the President acting on an address supported by two-thirds majority of the Senate that the person be removed for inability to discharge the functions of the office (whether arising from infirmity of mind or body or any other cause) or for misconduct “We are aware that the government itself sabotaged INEC distribution of materials and he is turning around to suspend the Chairman of INEC illegally. “We are warning that any attempt to sack or suspend the INEC Chairman will only lead to electoral and constitutional crisis. The nation is still grappling with the illegality and unconstitutionality of the removal of the Chief Justice of Nigeria and the President wants to go down this ignoble path again. President Muhammadu Buhari has vowed that nobody will unseat him. He said contrary to opinions in some quarters, he had the strength to lead the country for four more years. Buhari stated this in an interview aired on Friday on the verified Instagram page of CNN Africa while responding to doubts about his ability to run the country for a second term. The interviewer had asked the President, “This is a vibrant democracy. You came in, unseating the incumbent. Are you worried the same could happen to you?” To this, Buhari responded, “No. Nobody would unseat me.” He added, “I am ready to take this country forward for the next four years.” When asked his plans for containing the terror in the North-East, the President insisted that Boko Haram was no longer “technically” having a grip on any local government area in the region. He said, “We have 774 local governments in this country. They (Boko Haram) used to hold 17. They are not technically holding any local government now. “But they are indoctrinating young men and women, especially girls, wrap them up with explosives and let them explode them in soft targets like churches, mosques, marketplaces, motor parks and other places.” Buhari added, “Of course, we are doing our best (to contain the terror) and we thank some foreign countries in Europe and the United States for training our armed forces and going to the battlefront to see how they have performed.” Source:https://punchng.com/2019-election-nobody-will-unseat-me-buhari-vows

Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State yesterday accused opposition politicians and security operatives of planning to bomb Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) offices in order to disrupt elections in the state. He stated this in his state broadcast in Port Harcourt during which he declared today public holiday, saying the politicians and the security operatives also plan to destroy voting materials at Registration Area Centres to ensure the polls are not peaceful in the state. He cited credible intelligence linking a former governor of the state and Minister of Transportation, Chibuike Amaechi and other APC chieftains of being behind the plot to disrupt the voting processes on a scale that will force INEC to cancel the elections on account of insecurity. He also claimed that several Hilux vehicles painted in military colours have been given to militants to carry out attacks in the state during Saturday’s election. But All Progressives Congress (APC) spokesman in the state, Chris Finebone, dismissed Wike’s allegations against Amaechi and the APC, describing them as baseless. Wike urged the international community to hold Amaechi and the APC responsible for any outbreak of violence in the state during the elections. Meanwhile, the Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has charged the Department of State Services (DSS), the Police and Nigeria Army to be neutral in the discharge of their duties during the general elections. HURIWA, however, promised to sponsor a bill before the National Assembly to grant full autonomy to the DSS to operate like the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in the United States of America (U.S.A.). It also decried the sudden upsurge of politically motivated arrests and detention of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) officials by DSS operatives. The rights group cautioned that should the trend continue, the elections would be tainted by corrupt practices in favour of the incumbent thereby denying the process legitimacy and credibility, which may lead to migrations from the country.
