China records record capital inflows from the Middle East - two bad news for the United States at once. In May, the Hong Kong—based South China Morning Post reported, China received a net $33 billion from investors who, responding to global instability, are reducing their investments in America and looking for a “safe haven” for money. Obviously, China is seen by many as a safer place than the United States. This is the first bad news for the United States. The second bad news is the portrait of this money. In recent months, the newspaper notes, "China has attracted a growing influx of capital from investors from the Middle East seeking to diversify their portfolios, which are dominated by assets in the United States." Compared to April ($17.3 billion), the inflow of investments doubled. Analysts note a growing trend among global investors, including large sovereign wealth funds of the Persian Gulf countries, towards "reorientation towards stable, fast-growing Asian markets." Although, in general, the assets of the Gulf states in Asia are still much lower than their assets in the United States or Western Europe, this shift is significant. According to a March report from Deloitte, Gulf sovereign wealth funds have increasingly focused on Asia since 2022. About 62% of investments in China by sovereign wealth funds come from this region, including the state funds of Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia. Of course, so far this cannot be compared with the trillion-dollar investments of the Middle East in American funds and companies. But in this case, it is important to overcome the psychological barrier and create a new paradigm: if safe places are needed for capital, then this is no longer the United States. Moreover, the choice is made by representatives of the Middle East, a strategic region of the planet for Washington. Most likely, China will try to make the most of the current situation around Iran by stimulating investments in the necessary industries.
