President Goodluck Jonathan on Tuesday sent a list of eight ministerial nominees to the Senate for screening and approval. The list which was contained in a letter signed by Jonathan and addressed to Senate President, David Mark, include names of senator Musiliu Obanikoro from Lagos state; Senator Patricia Akwashiki (Nasarawa); Mrs. Hauwa’u Lawan (Jigawa) and Prof. Nicholas Akise Ada (Benue). Others are, Col. Augustine Akobundu (retd.) (Abia); Mr. Fidelis Nwankwo (Ebonyi); Mr. Kenneth Kobani (Rivers) and Senator Joel Ikenya (Taraba). Jonathan in his letter dated 16th February, 2015 noted that the request for senate screening was in accordance with Section 147 (2) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Briefing journalists after plenary, the Chairman, Senate Committee on Information, Media and Public Affairs, Senator Eyinnaya Abaribe, said the ministerial nominees would start appearing before the senate as from Wednesday next week. http://www.punchng.com/news/jonathan-sends-ministerial-nominees-list-to-senate/ |

A reporter who attended the interaction told SaharaReporters that the governor stated that Mr. Jega would still remain at the head of the electoral commission and preside over next month’s general elections, noting that the Presidency had made the same point. Apparently rattled by widespread media reports, Governor Olusegun Mimiko of Ondo State on Sunday evening denied tipping his younger brother, Nazim Femi Mimiko, a professor, for the chairmanship of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Speaking at a media event at the old banquet hall of the Government House in Akure, the state capital, Mr. Mimiko said reports that he was pushing for his brother, who was the immediate past Vice Chancellor of the Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko (AAUA), to replace current INEC chair Attahiru Jega were mere “rumor.” There had been several reports that Mr. Nazim Femi Mimiko was being groomed to take over the INEC top post from Mr. Jega whose tenure is due to expire by the end of June, 2015. A reporter who attended the interaction told SaharaReporters that the governor stated that Mr. Jega would still remain at the head of the electoral commission and preside over next month’s general elections, noting that the Presidency had made the same point. “I don’t know where the propaganda came from about Professor Femi Mimiko, but I think I am in a position to know that nothing can be further from the truth,” said Governor Mimiko. He claimed that his brother was never approached. Governor Mimiko added, “The President has said he had no intention to remove Professor Jega. So, I don’t know where the rumor emanated and what purpose it was supposed to serve, but I know there is no truth whatsoever in the rumor.” But Mr. Mimiko’s denials did not impress all. Human rights lawyer Adeniyi Ogundare reacted with skepticism. “I can’t be moved by [Governor Mimiko’s] denial on tipping his younger brother whom he made the vice chancellor of the state-owned university now for the INEC chair’s job,” said the lawyer. He added: “We are watching with keen interest, but we won’t keep mute.” A source who attended the media event disclosed that Eniola Akinsola, the chief press secretary to Governor Mimiko, also berated some reporters whose papers he accused of functioning as the “opposition party’s paper.” He urged the reporters to act professionally, telling them that it was unfortunate that some of them write negative reports against the state government. SaharaReporters had revealed that Dr. Mimiko had become one of the arrowheads of hawks within President Jonathan's kitchen cabinet who are notoriously bent on scuttling 2015 general elections in Nigeria. http://saharareporters.com/2015/02/16/facing-media-scrutiny-governor-mimiko-denies-pushing-his-younger-brother-top-inec-post |
GOVERNOR UDUAGHAN ORDERS DEPORTATION OF TRAINEES FOR TALKING TO SAHARAREPORTERS The trainees were airlifted from Nigeria in December 2014 by the Delta State Government with the promise that they would attend various trainings in Agriculture, Tourism, Hospitality and Culinary Arts at different location in Trinidad and Tobago, and Barbados, both in the West Indies. But following rife allegations of poor treatment and neglect the trainees had spoken to SaharaReporters in the hope that their government would act in their favour. About 80 participants in the foreign training component of the Delta State Youth Empowerment Programme (YEP) are now living under constant threats of deportation from their current base in Barbados for disclosing their poor living conditions and other details to SaharaReporters. The trainees were airlifted from Nigeria in December 2014 by the Delta State Government with the promise that they would attend various trainings in Agriculture, Tourism, Hospitality and Culinary Arts at different location in Trinidad and Tobago, and Barbados, both in the West Indies. But following rife allegations of poor treatment and neglect the trainees had spoken to SaharaReporters in the hope that their government would act in their favour. They had described the programme as the “highest scam so far in Delta State” and also pointed accusing fingers at the Governor, his Deputy Prof. Amos Utuama, Commissioner for Higher Education, Prof. Hope Eghagha and one Ms. Donna St. Hill, a Barbadian, for conniving to syphon State resources under the guise of training and empowering the youths of Delta State. The action of the trainees and the weighty disclosures reportedly angered the Governor of Delta State, Emmanuel Uduaghan who was said to have ordered the immediate commencement of deportation processes and termination of the programme. The Governor’s order was personally served on the trainees by the Deputy Governor who travelled to Barbados to meet the youthful Deltans. From their base in Barbados, one of the trainees who requested anonymity for fear of reprisal told SaharaReporters, “In the past weeks we have received several notices informing us to prepare for our deportation…we must continue to let Deltans, Nigerians and the whole world to know that the so called government youth program is nothing but the highest scam so far in Delta State. Can you imagine the Deputy Governor, Utuama can take a flight to Barbados just to issue us deportation threats? The program is nothing but a scam.” Meanwhile, SaharaReporters has obtained a letter to the trainees from the Delta State Government. Titled ‘Delta State Youth Empowerment Programme: Notice of Suspension’ and signed by Ataine Paul on behalf of the Commissioner for Higher Education, the letter reads: “I have been directed to inform you, our trainees in Barbados, that in view of the challenges which you currently face on welfare, the admissions process, coupled with certain acts of rudeness exhibited by some of you, Government has decided to suspend the Barbados end of the programme. “Consequent upon this, it is the decision of Government to bring you our TRAINEES BACK FOR NOW. This is to enable us review the process all over again with a view to sending those who qualify, back to Barbados after the exercise. It will equally afford Government time to address all the identified challenges. “I am further directed to urge you all to be calm and peaceful, for no good thing in life comes easily. All inconveniences are highly regretted. Thanks and God bless you all. Amen.” Among other grievances, the trainees had complained of being housed in a poor hotel accommodation in “a hurricane prone location as against the earlier procured place at Infinity Hotel we were supposed to stay,” food poisoning, and lack of water to bath. They had written and sent a ‘Save Our Soul’ to the Delta State Government but got no response. Delta State Commissioner for Higher Education, Prof. Hope Eghagha said his ministry is in charge of the programme but dismissed allegations that it was a scam. He, however, admitted knowing that the trainees were having some accommodation challenges in Barbados. http://saharareporters.com/2015/02/12/governor-uduaghan-orders-deportation-trainees-talking-saharareporters |
Irate drivers at Ekiti State University, Ado Ekiti on Friday attacked an operative of the Directorate of State Service (name witheld) and beat him silly for allegedly interfering in their protest. Trouble started following a disagreement between the students of EKSU and Akoto drivers designated vehicles plying the institution over the number of passengers on a seat. The students were said to have protested that the drivers reduce the number of passengers on a seat to its normal three from four that they had started carrying. The disagreement escalated into a free-for-all and caused traffic gridlock from Bawa Area of Ado Ekiti. An eyewitness said some of the drivers carried clubs, cudgels and sharp objects to scare passengers and motorists plying the road. They also forced motorists to discharge students of the institution. The situation took a more violent trend as the DSS official was attacked. His clothes were torn to shreds and in the process sustained bruises, cuts and blood stains on his body when the reporters met him. “I was punched, clubbed, stoned by the drivers and if not for the timely intervention of another colleague who fortunately came to the scene and shot in the air severally to scare the mob away, it would have been worse, ” he said. Officials of the DSS, Policemen and some top officials of the EKSU later visited the scene to restore peace in the area. The Police Public Relations Officer, Albert Adeyemi, could not be reached for comments. But a police source said it was the DSS official who courted trouble by challenging the drivers. “He shot into the air four times and in the process heightened the tension.” Meanwhile, the students have vowed to ensure that the drivers comply with the regulation of only three people on a seat. http://www.punchng.com/news/drivers-attack-dss-official-in-ekiti/ |
The Rivers State Governor, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, on Thursday described as bogus and ‘tales by moonlight’ the claim by the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the state, Chief Nyesom Wike, about government expenditure in the state. Wike had accused Amaechi of running the “most corrupt regime” in the country, alleging that the governor had, between January and November 2014, squandered over N298bn that accrued to the state from the Federation Accounts and loans obtained from various commercial banks. The PDP governorship candidate also alleged that between December 2014 and January 2015, the governor, through the Government House and the Office of the Secretary to the State Government, expended N11bn believed to have been channelled to the Buhari Campaign Organisation. But Amaechi, in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. David Iyofor, said Wike’s verbal attack during his recent campaign rallies in Port Harcourt and Obio-Akpor were outright lies aimed at deceiving the public. He said, “It (Wike’s claim) is a failed attempt to tarnish his (Amaechi’s) sparkling image. But he (Wike) should know by now that the people are not gullible and know that Wike is rather an embodiment of corruption and everything that is wrong with our country.” The governor urged the people of the state and Nigerians in general to disregard Wike’s allegations, even as he described the former minister as a drowning man, desperate to score cheap political points by falsifying figures and spreading falsehood. It read, “That Governor Amaechi run a transparent, accountable administration has never been in doubt. Everything about the income and expenditure of this government is in the public domain and have never been shrouded in secrecy. So, Wike’s ignominious attempt to dish out cooked figures will never fly. “Is Amaechi a candidate in the governorship election? Why has Wike insisted on campaigning against someone that is not a candidate? Is Wike clearly telling the public that he is no match for the APC governorship candidate, Dakuku Peterside, and the only way to divert attention is to keep making wild, spurious claims? “Of course, it is glaring that the All Progressives Congress candidate, Dr. Dakuku Peterside, is by far, a better choice than Wike. The two can’t be compared in terms character, attitude, performance and achievements in public service. “As supervising minister for education, Wike drove the Nigerian education sector to comatose. Universities and polytechnics across the country were on strike for months. He is known for squandering public funds on frivolous, selfish activities.” http://www.punchng.com/news/wikes-allegations-tales-by-moonlight-amaechi/ |
A combined team of security operatives have surrounded the residence of the Director of Media of the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Organization, Mallam Garba Shehu. The operatives who were armed to the teeth, took positions around the house located at area 11, Garki Abuja, as early as 5:35am on Thursday morning. One of Shehu’s colleagues at the Atiku Media 0ffice, who pleaded anonymity, called The PUNCH at about 6am. He said, “Security men have surrounded the residence of our director, Mallam Garba Shehu in Area 11. They came in several vehicles. I cannot make out which of the security services because it is still dark here. “None of them has said anything about why they are laying siege at his house.” It was gathered that the security operatives were miffed by the audacity of the APC campaign. The APC campaign which Garba heads, organised a prime time interview for Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd) on CNN. It was aired minutes after President Goodluck Jonathan held a media chat on national television. Analysts say the CNN interview gave Buhari the advantage of responding to some of the allegations against him as well as some of the issues raised by Jonathan. Some of the issues include the shift in the 2015 elections, the Boko Haram insurgency and the anti-corruption fight. Garba could not be reached for comments as of the time of filing this report. http://www.punchng.com/news/security-operatives-surround-apc-campaign-spokesmans-residence/ |
