HealthMetabolic Syndrome Markers. Are You At Risk? by Wazoblog(op): 5:37am On Jul 14, 2017
Metabolic syndrome could be described as a group of factors that could increase your risk for heart disease, stroke, and diabetes,
The name for these risk factors is termed: metabolic syndrome.

The first risk factor is a large waistline, or excess fat in the belly area, medically know as checking your ' >9.0 waist-hip ratio' according to the U.S. National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute.
This is the only visible sign.
The second risk factor is high triglycerides, a type of fat found in your blood. The third is a low level of HDL known as high-density lipoprotein -- cholesterol, the so-called good cholesterol.
The fourth risk factor is high blood pressure, and the fifth is a high level of sugar in your blood (diabetes)

The best way to prevent metabolic syndrome is to get to and maintain a healthy weight, improve your diet, and stay physically active. Goals for both preventing and treating metabolic syndrome are a BMI -- or body mass index -- of less than 25 and a waist measurement below 35 inches for women or 40 inches for men.
It only takes three of these risk factors for you to be diagnosed with metabolic syndrome. And once you have metabolic syndrome, you're twice as likely to develop heart disease and five times more likely to get type 2 diabetes, which is why it's often thought of as pre-diabetes.
Keeping regular visits to your physician will help you keep track of your blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar levels which are important indicators of improving your health.
With time, if these predisposing risk factors are not well in check, a need for medication might arise.

HealthSenate Wants Genotype As Compulsory Test For Intending Married Couples by Wazoblog(op): 9:59am On Jul 12, 2017
The bill seeks to provide for compulsory haemoglobin-Genotype screening before a marriage is conducted under the Marriage Act and before registration of new births under the Birth, Death etc Compulsory Registration Act.
Leading debate on the bill, Ogembe who noted that the objective of the bill was to establish a clear
legislative framework for effective management of Sickle Cell disease, which results from mismatch of couples’ genotype, said that the bill has become necessary following the untold pains suffered by people living with Sickle Cell disease.

He said: “We simply want to avoid human anxiety, pains and death as related to Sickle Cell disease. We want to improve the lives of often forgotten citizens who live with it. Unknown to many, it is one of the biggest public health problems in Nigeria. Nigeria from reports, is known to have the greatest number of sickle cell disease in the world.

“The picture is brought into sharper focus when we consider the finding by the American Centre for Disease Control and Prevention that slightly above 300,000 babies globally are born with sever sickle cell diseases. 225,000 are born in Sub-Sahara Africa, representing 75 per cent of the global figure.

“This bill when passed will reduce the incidence of the disease to the barest minimum in our nation and allow families to live in joy. Research has shown that only five per cent of children born with sickle cell disease live past the age of 10 years in Nigeria,” he said.
Senator Ogembe who decried that while the life expectancy of persons living with sickle cell disease in advanced countries is between 40 and 60 years, the case is not the same with Nigeria, said that there was an urgent need for a solution to the problem, adding that, “a situation where, in every two babies born in the world with sickle cell, one is a Nigerian is not encouraging.”

According to him, there was a need for compulsory testing and increased awareness to reduce the menace of the disease in the country, adding, “This disease causes serious pains that interfere with many aspects of the patients’ lives including education, employment and psychological development.

“It is a lifelong ailment. A person suffering it will likely live with the complication and recurrent pain for life. This effect is more manifest and severe when proper care is not given.”
He said that the disease could be avoided with proper awareness, stressing that it would be unfair to bring children into the world to live in unbearable pain all their lives.

On whether or not the bill contradicted the provisions of the Constitution, the lawmaker said it was founded on strong constitutional basis, adding,” With regard to the legal basis, a few may think that this bill may breach the right to private and family life as enshrined in Section 37 of the 1999 Constitution. This is not correct.

“Section 45(1) of the Constitution states that nothing in Section 37 shall invalidate any law that is reasonably justifiable in a democratic society in the interest of defence, public safety, public order, public morality or public health.
Contributing, lawmakers lauded the bill, saying it would help to protect unborn children from the excruciating pains associated with the disease, just as they described the disease as an unnecessary, as it could be avoided with proper awareness on the need for intending couples to undergo test.

According them, while the prevalence of the disease is on the decrease in other countries, same is not to be said of Nigeria, which according to records has the highest number of people living with the disease.

In his remarks, Senate President Bukola Saraki who referred the bill to the Committee on Health to be returned to Senate in four weeks, urged the committee to merge the bill with one currently before it to come up with a single bill that would address the problem.

HealthNew Powder Discovered To Reduce Sickle Cell Crisis by Wazoblog(op): 9:47am On Jul 12, 2017
A new powder formulation known as Endari (L-glutamine oral powder) for treatment of the debilitating disorder has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The new formulation is approved for patients aged 5 years and older to reduce severe complications associated with the blood disorder.

Sickle cell disease affects millions of people across the world, especially those of African descent and Nigeria has the largest number of persons living with the disease in the world. About 25 per cent of adults throughout the country have the sickle cell trait, AS, while an estimated 150,000 babies are born with sickle cell disease in Nigeria every year.

A person with sickle cell disease has red blood cells that are hard, sticky, and sickle-shaped. These cells clog smaller blood vessels resulting in pain as well as increased risk for infection, acute chest syndrome and stroke.

Painful crises are a common feature of sickle cell disease and Endari (L-glutamine) has been shown to reduce the number of crises in patients. Several treatments have been mooted in the past for sickle cell disease, including an experimental gene therapy that is offering hope to those who suffering from the disorder. Dr Richard Pazdur, the Acting Director of the Office of Hematology and Oncology Products in the FDA’s Centre for Drug.
