Senator Kaka, PDP, others kick against Ogun bond bill

As the executive bill seeking an enabling law to raise bonds and other financial instruments passed through first reading at the Ogun State House of Assembly last Thursday, some stakeholders have kicked against the move.
The Peoples Democratic Party, the Peoples Party of Nigeria, the National Association of Nigerian Students, and Senator Adegbenga Kaka, have cautioned the Governor Ibikunle Amosun-led administration against using such financial instrument to access fresh loans.
Kaka, who is member of the Action Congressof Nigeria, spoke against the bill in Abeokutaalongside leaders of the PPN, the PDP and NANS.
He argued that state government should firstdetermine the value and economic viability of the projects it wanted to embark on before taking loans for the purpose in order not to further plunge the state into financial problems.
He challenged the Amosun administration to let the people of the state know the true andcurrent debt profile as well as the repaymentsources of the loans it planned to secure.
The lawmaker, however, stressed that the repayment plan for such loans should not exceed the lifespan of the current administration.
Similarly, the Ogun State PPN Director of Organisation, Deji Kalejaiye said the people of the state must resist the government’s plan to take fresh loans through bond.
Also, the Senator Oladipo Odujinrin-led PDP in Ogun State urged all well-meaning citizensof the state “To rise up against the plan to mortagage their lives by the ACN government in the state.”
The party in a statement by its Publicity Secretary, Bidemi Osunbiyi, said that the alleged plan by the state government to obtain loans through the bond would enslave the future generations in the state.
It recalled that Governor Amosun was one ofthose prominent Nigerians who called for mass action on the pages of newspapers in 2010 against his predecessor for wanting totake similar step.
NANS on its own part described as “desperate” the alleged move by Governor Amosun administration to access the capital market through the instrumentality of the bond.
The association in a communiqué issued at the end of its National Executive Meeting held at the Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro and jointly signed by its National Vice President, Adeyemi Azeez and Secretary General, Thomas Hilejime, urged the Ogun State House of Assembly members to reject such abill.
But in a reaction, the Ogun ACN Publicity Secretary, Mr. Sola Lawal, described the PPN utterances as that of a party seeking relevance.

Contrary to reports last week that the President of the United States of America, Barack Obama personally invited some members of the opposition Action Congress of Nigeria , led by Bola Tinubu to the just concluded Democratic National Convention (DNC), there are reports indicating the ACN delegation attended the event on a generic invitation extended to several others regardless of their political status or inclinations.
Speculation were rife earlier in the week that the US president extended a ‘Gold Card’ invitation to Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu to attend the just concluded DNC in Charlotte, North Carolina in his capacity as the leader of the opposition party.
This invitation was portrayed as an endorsement of the policies and ideological leaning of the Action Congress Nigeria (ACN) by President Barack Obama and by extension,the US government.
The source said Bola Tinubu is qualified to attend the DNC just like others who have donated more than $5,000 to the campaign organisation of President Obama who is expected to square-off with Mitt Romney in the November 2012 presidential election.
A top official of the US Democratic Party said:
“The United States government will never allow itself to be dragged into local politics ofany region or country. Several politicians from other parties in Nigeria also attended the Democrats’ convention in Charlotte with the same kind of invitation got by Mr. Tinubu because they had donated the required funds to the Obama campaign team.
“None of them, including Mr. Tinubu was given a special treatment during the convention. President Barack Obama did not privately meet with any of them to discuss the local politics in their country, so the issue of special interest or preference did not arise.”
Sunday Dare, one of Sen. Bola Tinubu’s media aides was quoted to have said that the former governor will be attending the DNC ona ‘Gold Card’ invitation alongside Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State, speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Adeyemi Ikuforiji, and former commissioner for Information and Strategy in Lagos State, Dr. Dele Alake
