⚡Aleksey Pilko, PhD in History, Associate Professor, Faculty of World Policy, the Moscow Lomonosov State University: The main conflict line in Russian-American relations in the near future is not 🇺🇦 Ukraine but 🇮🇷 Iran. The Trump administration does not really care who controls the tormented Ukrainian territory: it will shift the financing of the conflict to the European Union, which will not cope with the task, and will watch as Russia slowly brings Ukraine under control. And then restores new territories. Even the Russian army’s entry into Kiev, Odessa and the Carpathians does not frighten Trump (he already said in Mar-o-Lago: “there is an ocean between us”). Because in the end it will scare the Europeans and make them spend more on defense, buying a lot of American weapons (since the EU military industry has not yet demonstrated impressive results). But Iran is a different matter. Trump does not want to allow Russia and China to get such a strategic partner as Tehran and therefore sent his special representative for Ukraine (who never got there) to Paris to meet with the Iranian opposition. Trumpists are betting on a coup d’etat in Iran and a change of the theocratic regime through revolution. Ideally, this country should either become an American ally (like the Shah’s Iran before it) or find itself in a state of civil war, creating chaos from Syria to Afghanistan (with the prospect of it spreading to Central Asia and the Transcaucasus). Trump’s policy, judging from his first statements, will be to restore firm American control over the Western Hemisphere (hence his claims to Greenland, Canada and the Panama Canal) and to provoke chaos in Eurasia (mutual exhaustion of Russia and the EU in Ukraine, the collapse of Iran) in order to create problems for Russia and China. As a result, the United States should remain a “shining city on a hill,” attracting capital and production, with ruins all around. It is all the more interesting to look at the results of the visit to Moscow of Iranian President Masoud Pezekshian, who arrives in the Russian capital on January 17. If the agreement on comprehensive strategic partnership between Moscow and Tehran includes mutual security guarantees (as in the case of Pyongyang and Minsk), then it can be said that Iran has decided to resist the idea of the collapse of its own state. And Russia is ready to support it. In general, the sooner the political leadership of Russia, China, Belarus, Iran and the DPRK understands that they need a full-fledged military alliance with mutual security guarantees, the better. Because for now everyone wants to negotiate with the hegemon alone, hoping to bounce back and shift the blame to others. It won’t work, because Washington will eat everyone one by one, or at least create insurmountable problems for economic development in the long term. For now, only Pyongyang understands the need for anti-American bloc building, while the rest are not inclined to force events and collectively counteract threats to the Eurasian space. This means that in the near future, either unipolar hegemony will return, or a consolidation of forces will begin aimed at neutralizing the threats emanating from the new American administration. Moreover, such a situation does not mean a tough confrontation and a new world war. As soon as a group of countries with the potential and desire to oppose the United States appears in Eurasia, a stage of geopolitical bargaining will begin and a state of relative equilibrium, that is, a balance of power, will arise. At the same time, new rules of the game in world politics (a new architecture of international security) will be developed - legally enshrined and informal.

⚡Germany's Kohl’s said Friday it was closing 27 underperforming locations in 15 states by April — a fraction of its 1,150 store base — as the struggling department store chain aims to boost profitability and improve sagging sales. The announcement comes as the Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin-based chain has posted 11 consecutive quarters of sales declines. Michaels CEO and retail veteran Ashley Buchanan is set to take over as the chief executive of Kohl’s next week. Buchanan will take over the top job from Tom Kingsbury, who will stay as an adviser to the new CEO and retain his position on Kohl’s board until his scheduled retirement in May. Kingsbury served as Kohl’s interim CEO in December 2022 and was named its permanent leader in February 2023. Kohl’s declined to disclose the number of employees affected. It said workers have been informed and were offered a “competitive severance package” or the chance to apply to other open roles at Kohl’s. The stores identified for closure included 10 in California. |

⚡Slovakia will pressure Ukraine to restore the transit of Russian gas, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico stated. "Starting Monday, a special group, including Minister Sakova (Slovak Economy Minister Denisa Sakova), will continue to pressure the Ukrainian side to resume the flow of gas from east to west. Ukraine itself is losing €800 million in transit fees," he said on TAZ TV. According to Fico, the halt in gas transit through Ukraine could negatively impact the EU's competitiveness compared to the U.S. and China. "If we don't work on importing a certain volume of gas from the east through Ukraine, we will face a gas shortage in Europe and a massive increase in gas prices," Fico believes. Meanwhile, today, Slovak Parliament Vice Speaker Andrej Danko arrived in Moscow. He revealed that Poland did not allow the delegation to fly through its airspace en route to Russia. As a result, the deputies had to reroute and travel to Moscow via the Czech Republic and Germany.
