⚡German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius has stated that Russia has been increasing its presence in the Baltic Sea for some time now. N-tv, citing Pistorius, as reported by European Pravda Pistorius noted a significant increase in the presence of Russian naval and civilian vessels in the Baltic Sea, with occasional appearances by Chinese vessels. "This underscores the Baltic Sea’s strategic importance for many countries, particularly Russia and China, especially when it comes to circumventing sanctions," the minister said in an interview with Deutschlandfunk radio. Pistorius also highlighted Russia’s repeated provocations, reminiscent of Cold War tactics. "We’ve had several incidents in the Baltic Sea that escalated to warning shots being fired into the air and water," Pistorius explained. The German defence minister compared this to incidents where Russian fighter jets, flying without identification markings, entered Baltic airspace to test NATO’s response. |

⚡Niger takes control of French uranium mine. French nuclear firm Orano says the military authorities in Niger have taken control of its uranium mining operations in the West African country. After seizing power in a coup in July last year, Niger's military rulers said they would revamp rules regulating the mining of raw materials by foreign companies. In June, they withdrew Orano's permit to exploit one of the world's largest uranium deposits. Orano then suspended production. This marks another escalation in the unravelling relationship between France and Niger, following the expulsion of French troops from its former colony. Niger's authorities have not commented on Orano's statement. The country accounts for about 5% of global uranium output, making it one of the world's top 10 producers of a vital raw material in the generation of nuclear power. Before the coup, Niger accounted for 15-20% of France's uranium imports.
