Art, Graphics & Video › Canon Eos R10 Review by xcyril(op): 4:13am On Jul 19, 2022
The Canon EOS R10 – with professional-level autofocus and speed, 4K 60p imaging and 120p slow-motion at 1080p – offers performance that punches well above its weight class. It seems churlish to bristle at the lack of in-body image stabilization or the crop at 4K 60p, but those are really the only drawbacks to what is a fantastic APS-C body for hybrid shooting.

Pros
- Pro-grade autofocus
- Pro-grade burst shooting
- 4K 60p and 1080p 120p

Cons
- No in-body stabilization
- 4K 60p is cropped
- No weather sealing

Canon never ceases to surprise us, but with the Canon EOS R10 it has truly outdone itself. Here we have a body that’s priced at under a grand in the US and UK, yet it offers shooting speeds that match or exceed those of the top pro sports cameras on the market.
No, we’re not suggesting that the Canon EOS R10 is the best professional camera you can buy. However, it is mechanically faster than the Canon EOS R3 and Sony A1, and it beats the Canon EOS R5 and Canon EOS R6 when shooting both mechanically and electronically.

We weren’t surprised to see an entry level EOS R camera, and we weren’t even surprised to see it in the form of an APS-C body. However, for it to pack this much firepower – making it, sensor size notwithstanding, a faster and higher resolution Canon camera than everything except the R5 and R3 – is quite extraordinary.

The manufacturer may have been late to the mirrorless dance, and it may have muddled some of the steps between the new APS-C EOS R line and the existing APS-C EOS M line. Now, though, seems to have a clear idea of the road ahead – and the Canon EOS R10 could be the ultimate Trojan horse to get people invested in its mirrorless vision.

CANON EOS R10: SPECIFICATIONS

CANON EOS R10: KEY FEATURES

Aimed at enthusiasts, travel photographers and lifestyle content creators, the R10 is designed to pack all the features that a photographer could want or need when graduating from a smartphone or DSLR while retaining a light, compact footprint. Which, in some ways, creates something of an overlap with the EOS M series of cameras… but more on that later.

At the heart of the Canon EOS R10 is a reworked version of Canon’s familiar 24.2MP APS-C image sensor, which has been re-engineered to deliver improved readout speeds – culminating in the lightning-fast 15fps mechanical / 23 fps burst shooting. In an astonishing move for an entry level camera, the R10 features the same Dual Pixel CMOS AF II found in the high-end R3, R5 and R6 bodies, with full subject tracking for humans, animals and vehicles.

Not only was the latter was previously exclusive to the pro-grade Canon EOS R3, but the camera also features AF case studies and can achieve autofocus down to an impressive -4EV. The R10 can capture 4K 60p, though this invokes a 64% crop (giving a frame similar to Super 35), and can capture 4K 30p oversampled from 6K, along with 1080p at 120p for slow-motion. Canon claims around 60 minutes of this kind of high-intensity shooting before overheating / recording limits kick in.
Canon EOS R10: Build and handling

The R10 is an incredibly small and lightweight camera, at just 122.5 x 87.8 x 83.4mm and 429g, giving it a feel not unlike the Canon EOS Rebel T8i / 850D. Pair it with the new Canon RF-S 18-45mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM kit lens or the Canon RF 16mm f/2.8 STM and you've got an ultra lightweight powerhouse.
Obviously it isn't as robust as something like the Canon EOS R7, and doesn't boast any weather sealing, so don't get too cocky with it in extreme environments.

You'll find a joystick on the back of the camera – which is a big addition for a body at this price point – though the Canon control wheel is absent. However, front and rear exposure dials give you full control over your imaging if you want to venture into full manual shooting. And quick-draw one-handed shooters will be happy that the power switch is on the right-hand side, on the rear dial. The camera also includes a microphone jack, which complements the fully articulating touchscreen to make it vlogging- and video-friendly, and also includes a pop-up flash built into the viewfinder hump.

CANON EOS R10: PERFORMANCE

The first thing we noticed about the R10 is just how effective the subject tracking and AF is. We've done a lot of shooting with the Canon EOS R5, to the point where we take for granted just how good the market-leading autofocus is (which is, effectively, a cheat code for wildlife photography.

For an entry level camera have an autofocus system this sophisticated… it's just unheard of. This really is pro-level performance at an unbelievable position in the market, and it's a potential game changer for your photography. That said, while the burst speed is of a pro standard, the buffer capacity (21 RAWs / 123 JPGs) obviously isn't going to rival that of the best professional cameras. That said, while photographing professional ice skaters and skittish wildfowl alike, we were able to capture every frame we wanted – so the performance is definitely not to be underestimated.

While there isn't as much latitude here when pushing the ISO, particularly with slower lenses, there is plenty of pin-sharp detail in the images especially when you treat the sensitivity with respect. The 4K 60p crop is, in one sense, profoundly unwelcome, rendering your already 1.6x compromised lenses by a further 64% in terms of their focal length – so if you want to shoot wide, you're going to need a very wide lens as it is going to be much effectively longer.
At the same time, though, the same benefit of APS-C cameras to wildlife shooters – the way that the crop factor amplifies focal length – is only further embellished by the 4K crop, meaning that you can artificially extend your reach even further when shooting video. And of course, you can always shoot in 4K 30p to avoid the crop.

Canon has introduced a new line of lenses with the APS-C format in mind: RF-S lenses (taking their name from the EF-S standard, which was the APS-C version of EF-mount glass). However, the Canon EOS R10 uses the same RF mount as its full frame counterparts – which means that existing full frame RF lenses can be used natively, while EF and EF-S lenses can also be used via the Mount Adapter EF-EOS R. Do note, however, that EF-M lenses (APS-C optics designed for Canon’s other APS-C line, the EOS M system), will not work with the R7, despite them sharing the same sensor format.

CANON EOS R10: EARLY VERDICT

The Canon EOS R10 is a brilliant value proposition, offering some seriously advanced specs in a light, affordable, novice-friendly body. If you know what you're doing with this camera, you can get some seriously impressive results – and if you have no idea what you're doing, it will help you develop your skills.

It's a fantastic all-purpose camera, with powerful stills specs and impressive video capabilities – though if you want to shoot 4K 60p, this probably isn't going to be an ideal vlogging / presenting camera due to the combination of 1.6x APS-C effect and 64% additional crop.

If you're an existing APS-C mirrorless shooter, you probably want to look to the Canon EOS R7 as it's looking to be the best body on the market right now. If you're stepping up from an APS-C DSLR or smartphone shooter, though, this is a brilliant option to push your creativity and get great results from your photo and video.

Art, Graphics & Video › Parts Of A Professional Camera And Their Functions by xcyril(op): 3:32am On Jul 12, 2022
They say that to master any skill, you must know as much about it as possible. You need to know its intricacies to be able to execute that skill to your best abilities. Photography is no different. Knowing the basic parts of a camera and its functions is essential so that you can use them to your advantage and help you maximize the camera’s potential. After all, a camera is only as good as its operator.

Knowing Your Camera Inside & Out

Taking gorgeous photos can be done with the press of a single button thanks to the technological advancements of cameras nowadays. Additionally, modern cameras have accurate auto-focus, low light processing, burst speed shutter settings, and more. Their automatic mode is also capable of taking beautiful shots without much fiddling with its settings.

While these features are suitable for beginners, knowing how the basic camera parts work and how you can utilize them well can help you improve your skills tenfold and become an expert photographer in the long run.

Parts of a Camera and Their Functions

Modern digital cameras all have the same basic parts. Here are some parts of a camera, how they work, and what they contribute to the photo making process:

Viewfinder: The viewfinder is one of the most important parts of a camera. It is a rectangular-shaped part at the back of your camera that lets you see and frame your subject. Some viewfinders are fully digital, which shows you various details like your shutter speed, aperture, and ISO before you take the shot.

Pentaprism: The pentaprism is a mirror placed at a 45-degree angle behind the camera lens. The mirror projects the light captured from the lens to the viewfinder. Before pentaprisms, photographers always had to look downwards when taking photos. This is not ideal for some subjects and would only allow you to take photos at hip-level. Pentaprisms got rid of this problem and now defines single-lens reflex or SLR cameras.

Built-in Flash: A built-in flash is the part of the camera’s anatomy that produces a burst of light (i.e., a flash of light) when triggered. It has a fixed position on the front or top of the camera to allow it to illuminate the subject. The built-in flash fires only when the camera takes a picture.

Flash Button: The flash button is present on cameras with a built-in pop-up flash. Its main functionality is to force the flash to open before triggered. At the same time, on some cameras, if you hold press the flash button, you can adjust the intensity of the flash by setting the flash exposure compensation.

Lens Mount: A lens mount is the mechanical fitting that allows the lens to attach to the camera. You can only use lenses that match your camera’s lens mounting system. Some camera manufacturers use proprietary lens mounting systems to ensure clients will use their lenses.

Lens Release Button: The lens release button unlocks the lens mount and allows you to detach the lens. Although you can attach the lens in one step, as a safety measure, you can only detach it by pressing the lens release button. You’ll find it on the front of the camera, near the lens mount.
Mode Dial: A mode dial is one of the most used parts of the camera. It is a small cogwheel situated on the top-right of the camera that switches between the camera’s modes (i.e., ways of operating). Additionally, a camera may have multiple modes, including manual, automatic, and semiautomatic settings, and scene-based.

Focusing Screen: A camera’s focusing screen is the glass surface on which the camera’s mirror projects the image. The focusing screen helps in achieving various focus effects such as sharp and high-contrast shots to blurs and bokeh.

Condenser Lens: A condenser lens has two matching convex lenses. This part uses a simple method for correcting color fringing or aberration that is a common problem encountered when using traditional camera lenses.

Digital Sensor: The digital sensor of a camera is one of its most delicate parts. This sensor captures the light coming from the lens to create an image. Modern cameras use either a charged-coupled device (CCD) or a complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) imager for capturing images.

Grip: The grip is the right side of a camera, which has a special curved design to allow you to comfortably handhold the camera. It usually provides space to place your fingers and securely hold the camera. The grip usually has a different texture than the rest of the camera.

Shutter: The shutter is an opaque piece of metal or plastic that controls the amount of light that reaches the camera sensor. Additionally, the length of which your shutter stays open will determine how your exposure will look like. You can activate this using the shutter release button and adjust it accordingly using your camera’s shutter speed setting.

Display: The camera display shows the user helpful information about the photos and the camera. Here you will see the different camera settings you can tweak to alter your exposure, ISO, shutter speed, and more. You can also access other menus using this display to change the settings on your camera. Most camera displays nowadays let you see how your image will appear before you press the shutter release button. This feature revolutionized digital cameras as it helps photographers in creating consistent shots.

Electronics: Your camera’s electronic components are divided into three separate categories: photo capture components, camera controller, and user interface components. The controller elements control all the electronic components of the camera. Its photo capture elements are responsible for the recording of images. Meanwhile, the user interface elements are responsible for letting the user interact with and control the camera.

Remote Control Sensor: A remote control sensor is an electronic device (usually an infrared device) that allows you to connect the camera to remote controls. Once you make the connection, you can use the remote control to trigger the shutter from a distance or at a predetermined moment.

Shutter Button: The shutter button is one of the most iconic parts of a camera. The button tells the camera to release the shutter and take a picture. DSLR cameras assign a second functionality to the shutter button: the button triggers the camera’s autofocus system when it is half-pressed.

Autofocus System: One of the advantages that digital cameras have over traditional film cameras is their ability to focus on a particular subject quickly and automatically. This is possible thanks to the autofocus sensor, one of the parts of a lens that sends information to the computer inside the camera and commands the lens to adjust its focusing elements to render a sharp image.

Reflex and Relay Mirror: The reflex mirror is in any SLR or DSLR camera. Unlike rangefinder cameras, the lens of a DSLR is not on the same axis as the lens, which is why this type of camera needs a mirror. The reflex mirror is a mirror positioned at a 45-degree angle to reflect light from the lens to the viewfinder, enabling you to see what the lens sees.

Aperture: Aperture is one of the three pillars of determining the exposure of your photographs. Additionally, aperture is the opening in your lens through which light passes through. This part has small, thin blades that shrink or expand depending on how much light you want in your exposure. It also determines the depth of field of your camera, which is a vital factor in how much background blur you want.

Main Dial: The main dial is a cogwheel situated on the front part of the camera that allows you to adjust aperture, shutter speed, exposure compensation, and other parameters. On some cameras, the main dial can help you navigate through the images on the memory card.

Hot Shoe: The hot shoe, a U-shaped metal bracket situated on top of the camera, is among the basic parts of a camera. It is a mechanical fitting that allows you to connect an external flash unit and other accessories such as radio triggers, external microphones, and light meters.

Zoom Elements: If you just bought your first ever camera, chances are you got a zoom lens with it. Zoom lenses allow you to shift between focal lengths, from wide to telephoto, depending on your lens’ focal range, by turning the lens rings.

Batteries: Lastly, the battery is one of the most important parts of the camera. Most of its components will not work if not powered by one. Having a long-lasting battery lets you shoot more photos and shoot for extended periods, allowing you to find the perfect shot.

Understand How Your Camera Works

To master any art form, you need to know the tools that you will be using. As with cameras, knowing the parts of a camera and how your camera works lets you control your exposure and depth of field, letting you render beautiful shots and adapt to any situation and environment. If you are looking to become a master photographer, take the time to understand the parts of a camera and their functions.

Art, Graphics & Video › How To Use Manual Mode On A Camera by xcyril(op): 4:56am On Jul 08, 2022
Pursuing photography as an amateur can be intimidating. As new technology arrives, second-hand professional cameras become a viable option for those who want to foster a new hobby in photography. Older models of newer cameras produced in the last 5-10 years are still capable of taking artistic photographs and are a cheaper investment for someone on a tight budget. In conjunction with a vintage lens, you have all the tools necessary to take professional-looking photos. As a new photographer, taking photos using your camera’s “auto” setting may be appealing, but learning how to shoot in full manual is a valuable skill to know.

UNDERSTANDING YOUR CAMERA'S CONTROLS

Looking at your camera, it may be overwhelming to see all of the buttons and knobs scattered around. There are some basic controls on your camera that you need to locate and be familiar with before you start taking photos. These controls change what mode your camera is in and control the basic settings that allow your camera to take a proper photo.

1. Find the mode selector: The mode selector has different letters and symbols that represent what mode your camera will take photos in. Manual mode is typically denoted by the letter M. This mode will allow you to set all the parameters for a photo.

2. Look for the aperture knob: The aperture knob adjusts how much light can pass through the lens. Aperture is represented by "f/" and a number. A larger aperture (lower number) means more light enters the lens, and a narrower aperture (higher number) means less light enters the lens. Additionally, a wider aperture produces more background blur, which is better for portraits. A narrower aperture produces a greater depth of field. Ignore this knob if your lens has an aperture ring.

3. Locate the shutter speed knob: The shutter speed knob adjusts how long the lens shutter will be open. Shutter speed is denoted in seconds, and the shutter is typically open for a fraction of a second. Depending on the lighting of a shot, a longer shutter speed will create a brighter image, and a shorter shutter speed will result in a darker image. If the camera is not steady, a longer shutter speed may result in motion blur.

4. Identify the ISO knob. Adjusting ISO changes your camera’s sensitivity to light. A higher ISO creates a brighter image, and a lower ISO leads to a darker image. However, a higher ISO can lead to noise in an image, resulting in unwanted grain. So, adjusting ISO should be done after the aperture and shutter speed is set.

5. Look for the shutter button. The shutter button is what triggers your camera to take a photo. You press the shutter button once you are satisfied with your photo composition.

UNDERSTANDING YOUR CAMERA LENS

Vintage lenses are an excellent option for beginner photographers because they offer the same functionality as a modern lens, at the fraction of the cost. Depending on the condition of your vintage lens, they should have the same photo quality as any modern lens. Some vintage lenses may even add unique characteristics to photos that you may find appealing. Fundamentally, all prime lenses have the same controls that adjust aperture and focus.
1. Identify the aperture ring: The aperture ring on your lens functions the same as the aperture knob on the camera body. Rotate the ring to your desired aperture by lining up the number to the mark.

2. Look for the focus ring: Turn the focus ring back and forth until your subject is clearly in focus. Markings below the ring signify the distance between your camera and the subject in meters and feet.

TAKING PHOTOGRAPHS

Now that you are familiar with the controls on your camera, you are ready to start taking photos in manual mode with your vintage lens.

1. Find and position your subject: Place your subject in a spot where there is suitable light. If there is too little light your camera adjustments may still not be able to compensate for the darkness.

2. Set your focus using the focus ring: While remaining steady or using a tripod, twist the focus ring until your subject is clear.

3. Adjust the aperture with the aperture ring. Twist the aperture ring until you reach the desired brightness or background blur. If you are satisfied with your background blur but your image is still too bright or too dark, continue to change the other settings. For images with larger or more subjects, keep your aperture narrower so you can have more in focus.

4. Set the shutter speed: Rotate the shutter speed knob until you reach the brightness you want. If you are holding the camera with your hands, or if your subject is moving quickly, keep the shutter speed as low as possible to reduce the chance of motion blur. For long exposure shots, set your camera on a tripod and utilize a remote or timer so that your hands don’t shake the camera.

5. Fix the ISO setting: Set the ISO setting to compensate for any minor changes to brightness. Try to change ISO settings last in order to reduce noise in your photos. If your photos come out noisy, adjust the aperture and shutter speed first.

6. Take the shot: Press your shutter button and listen for the camera shutter to open and close. Review your shot and change your settings as necessary.

Business › 13 Things I Wish I’d Known Before Starting My Photography Business by xcyril(op):
Written by Lauren Lim

We started our photography business in 2006. That’s almost 12 years ago, but it feels like a lifetime, especially when we look back on all that’s happened. And when we think about all the mistakes we’ve made, well, it feels more like two lifetimes!

But mistakes are just wonderful little learning opportunities in disguise. And while we’ve had our fair share of screw-ups, we’ve been able to learn and improve as a result. So we’re going to pull the curtains back, share a ton of our mistakes, and the things we wish we had known when we were just getting started.

We learned these lessons the hard way. Hopefully by sharing them with you, you’ll be able to avoid these mistakes, and have a smoother ride to success!

1. Learn To Shoot In Manual Mode Right Away

We shot our first year of weddings in Aperture Priority Mode. At the time, it seemed like the easier option. But we’ve since realized that it was actually making things harder on ourselves! See, the importance of learning to shoot in manual mode isn’t because modes like Aperture Priority and Shutter Priority are useless. They can be a solid choices in certain situations.

The real value of manual mode shooting is in how it forces you to understand what’s going on with your camera, and the light around you. Learning this early on will help you get more control over your images, and improve your shooting skills quickly.

Another bonus is that manual mode also lets you be more consistent in your exposures, which helps you save time with your editing! So this isn’t some photography snobbery here. Learning how to shoot in manual mode is going to help you in a ton of ways, and the sooner you can learn how to do it, the more benefit you’ll see!

2. You Are Not Just A Photographer

When we got started we thought that if we had great photography skills, we’d have a successful business. But that couldn’t be further from the truth. If you’re starting and running your own business, you need to wear a baker’s dozen of hats.

You are a photographer/customer service expert/book keeper/marketing director/social media whiz/branding dude/website creation person/secretary/treasurer/CEO/CFO/ and pretty much any other title you can think of.

The sooner you realize that you’re going to need to become good at a LOT of different things, the sooner you can start improving at them all.

Great photography skills are important, don’t get me wrong. But you need to have a LOT of other ones if you’re going to make a business out of it!

3. Be Patient

This is a lesson we still have to remind ourselves of constantly. When we first got started, we figured we’d have a wildly successful business rolling within a year. Fast forward 6 years, and we still didn’t feel we quite got there. It takes time to get good at photography. It takes time to get good at marketing. It takes time to get good at customer service. It takes time to get good at business organization…

Basically, it takes time to get good at the dozens of things you need to be good at to run a wildly successful photography business. So don’t beat yourself up if things aren’t happening as fast as you expected. If you stick with it, and keep improving, you’ll get there.

4. People Skills Are The Most Important Skills

Photography is a people business. Even if you’re a landscape shooter, your clients are people. And the better you can work with, and take care of, the people you do business with, the more success you’ll see.

We didn’t understand just how important this was until we read the book How To Win Friends & Influence People. From that point on, we saw that the more effort we put into being great with people, the more success we had. That book changed our business, and our lives. I know that sounds like an exaggeration, but I promise it’s not.

5. Unnecessary Gear and Business Purchases Can Be Crippling

It’s very easy to get caught in the never-ending cycle of buying things to “help your business”. With photography, it’s even more dangerous because the purchases are fun and exciting! It’s not hard to convince yourself that if you just had that better lens, you’d take better photos, and your business would be more successful.

I don’t even want to think about how much money we’ve wasted by buying gear that we didn’t really need. It all ended up collecting dust in our closet until we sold it for a serious loss. After a few years of that nonsense, we got wise and started being very, very, very thoughtful about purchasing anything.
Our gear might not get many jealous stares from other photographers, but as long as it’s creating the images we want, that’s all that matters.

It’s the same deal for business purchases. Think carefully before pulling out that credit card. It’s hard enough to make a solid profit with photography without huge expenses to deal with.

6. Branding Is Important, But Stationary Is Not

Along with our collection of rarely used equipment is a BIG collection of outdated print materials. Brochures, packaging, and thousands (yes, thousands) of business cards. All of them are totally useless, and a big waste of money and paper. When it comes to your branding, creating something personal, unique and consistent is super valuable. It helps you stand out from other photographers, and communicates who you are.

But when it comes to ordering branded printed products, be careful. Don’t think that the huge order will save you money, because chances are you won’t ever use it all. This is especially true near the start of your career, when you’ll potentially change your branding a couple times before finding the right fit.

Try to find ways to print smaller runs, or print on demand. We’ve gone from ordering thousands of business cards, to printing out a couple dozen at a time on our home printer. If you run out, then you know you’re actually using them, and can order a slightly larger batch.

7. Get Outside Inspiration

When we first got into professional photography, we were wedding shooters. We spent countless hours looking at the websites and blogs of other wedding photographers. We spent tons of time on forums with other wedding photographers. We read wedding magazines, and watched shows about weddings. We basically immersed ourselves completely in that world.

Don’t get me wrong, you can definitely learn a ton from the people who share the same profession as you. But if you don’t look for inspiration outside of that realm, you will find yourself just doing the same as everyone else.

Great businesses and photographers don’t just do the same. They find ways to stand out! As a photographer, the sources of inspiration are nearly endless, so don’t limit yourself to looking at photographers who do the same work as you. Study the work of the great photographers of history, check out the new work being made in different genres, read about painters, watch movies, flip through comic books — artistic inspiration is everywhere, so open yourself up to it!

The same goes for business inspiration. You can learn tons from internet marketers, copywriters, and pretty much anyone in business. After all, it’s all about helping your customers get value out of what you do. The end results differ, but the fundamental concepts are more similar than you might realize!

8. Referrals Are Essential

Word of mouth referrals are the most powerful sources of bookings for photographers. People are way more likely to trust the recommendation of a friend than an ad in a magazine. You need to be working hard to get referrals. At first, we didn’t realize that we actually had to encourage referrals. Sure, you’ll get some just because folks like to talk about great companies. But many clients probably have no idea just how valuable their referrals are to you!

There are lots of ways to encourage referrals. You can set up a formal referral program that rewards clients for sending new business your way. Or you can simply give them a stack of business cards along with their photos, and let them know just how much you appreciate them telling their friends about you. Or do both!! However you do it, just don’t neglect those referrals. They will be the backbone of your business!

9. Market Or Die

Does this sound familiar? You start something up. A blog. A website. A business. You’re sure you have a brilliant idea, and that it will be wildly successful. You make a gorgeous logo. You create a stunning online presence, filled with witty writing and enticing images. You press publish, sit back, and wait for the inquiries and comments to pour in. And then nothing happens.

It took us a loooong time to realize that, in general, no one cares about what you’re doing. Unless you make them care about it. And that, quite simply is what marketing is all about. Showing people that what you’re doing is interesting and valuable. You could have the most amazing photography in the world, but unless people know about it, you will not see any success.

So look at this way. Getting your business all set up with a website and name and logo and all that stuff — that’s what gets you to the starting point. Then the real work begins. You need to get out there and tell people about it, and market yourself!

10. Your List Is Crazy Valuable

One of the most valuable marketing assets you can create is a newsletter list. These days it’s really ridiculously easy to send out updates with emails, giving you a direct link to your best customers! We never put enough effort into building a newsletter list for our photography business, and have always regretted it. We just didn’t realize how important it was.

A great list can help you get more out of your marketing promotions, book sessions when you’re going out of town, get feedback on how to improve your business, and more.
The sooner you start building your list, the more it will grow, and the more power it will have for your business.

11. Develop Off-Season Income

For many years we struggled with this one. We’d have a great summer, shoot tons of weddings, portraits, and the money would be flowing. Then, come fall, things would slow down, and by winter it was silent. There were months with no income coming in, and things would be super tight by the time spring rolled around.

If you live in a place where the shooting is seasonal, try to figure out a way to develop income year round. There are no simple answers here, and it will really depend on the type of photography you do, and what other skills you have. But if you can get even a small stream of cash flow in the off-season, it will make things far more comfortable.

12. Go Outside The Box

It’s easy to do things the same way everyone else does. It feels safe and proven. But it can actually make things harder for you, because you don’t stand out, or offer anything unique to clients! At first we offered the same products, the same packages, and had our business organized the same way as most wedding and portrait photographers worldwide.

And it was boring. It didn’t reflect how we felt about photography, and how we wanted to work with our clients. So we stopped being so afraid, and started offering different products. We started shooting in different ways. And we were way happier, and so were our clients! Try something new. Be creative. Be bold. Get outside that box, and you’ll see just how much fun it is out there!

13. Think Big

If you’re going to start a business, don’t be afraid to think and dream big. When we first got into wedding photography, we were talking about how our first season would go. I was hoping that we booked at least 5 weddings. Rob was expecting more around 15 – 20. I thought he was crazy, and just thinking about those numbers made me scared.

Well, we ended up shooting nearly 30 weddings that year. But if we stopped trying after 5, because we figured that was enough, we would have never been able to go full-time right off the bat. So go ahead and think big. With some patience and creativity, and a lot of hard work, chances are you’ll surpass even your wildest dreams! Whew! Is your mind spinning?? I know mine is.

Career › 28 Ideas For Aspiring Photographers To Make Money Online by xcyril(op):
You’ve got a camera, and a computer, but one thing you don’t have enough of is cash. With the right skills, you can earn money doing what you love — taking pictures. But there’s more than just the traditional career paths like wedding photography. Thanks to the internet, there are more options available to you than ever before, some are good for a bit of spending money whilst others can pave careers.

We’ve done all the brainstorming for you. Here are 28 ways to earn money as a photographer online.

1. Sell Stock Photos

Stock photography grew quickly within the internet age, and it’s still a viable way to earn a little spending money. (After all, photography tends to be an expensive hobby). Stock photos are used by advertising agencies, websites, bloggers, publications and more. You can sell stock photos of pretty much any genre — to really gain some ground, try to shoot photos on subjects that aren’t yet well covered.

2. Sell an eBook

Another way to share your photo knowledge is to write and sell an eBook. Look to see what’s already out there before deciding on a subject. Platforms through Amazon and Barnes and Noble make it possible to get your title in popular online stores. 'How to' guides often do well, but you’re only limited by your imagination.

3. Create a travel guide

Not into the 'how tos'? If you’ve got a lot of photos of one location, from either your travels or because you live there, you can put together a travel guide to sell as an eBook. Include photographs of all the must-see locations along with a few travel tips.

4. Sell a printed coffee table style book

Got the photos but can’t do a lot of writing? Sell a coffee table style photo book featuring your own images. Blurb.com is an excellent platform for doing just that.

5. Sell prints

Selling online doesn’t mean just selling digital goods — you can sell prints too. You can create your own website or sell them through a service.

6. Take pictures at local events and sell them online

Parents love pictures of their kids t-ball games. Offer more than a cellphone snapshot, and you’ll likely have quite a few people wanting to buy your shots online. From games to fairs and festivals, there’s a lot of options, you’ll just need to do the groundwork. Upload your images to a website like Pixieset.com and they’ll take care of the printing and shipping for you.

7. Sell photojournalism prints to news publications

If you’re in the right place at the right time, your image could be worth quite a bit for the right publication. Location or newsworthy events often determine what publications might be interested in the shot.

8. Edit photos

No, it’s not taking photos, but chances are if you’re good at photography you’ve also accumulated some Photoshop skills either through real life practical experience or through learning via an online photoshop course. Search job boards for people looking for some photo editing, or reach out to publications.

9. Sell your photo on a greeting card

Toss in a touching bit of prose or a joke, and your images could make excellent greeting cards. You can pitch card companies, or create and sell them yourself on places like Etsy.

10. Build a following on social media

This option works well mixed with other ideas, to promote an eBook, for example. But that’s not always the case. Popular Instagrammers are often paid to take pictures of a product and share it with their followers.

11. Sell fine art prints

If your photos are wall-worthy, sell them as fine art prints on your own website. Building your own website may be a bit more work, but may also pay off more in the long run.

12. Work as a photography tutor

Work one-on-one with new photographers as an online tutor teaching the basics and critiquing their shots. You can work for a tutoring company or create your own website. You can also tutor locally and find leads online.

13. Write 'how to' photography articles

Knowledge is power—err, cash. Publications from websites to magazines often pay for a good how-to article, so it’s another good avenue for sharing your photography know-how.

14. Start a photography blog

If you’re as good with words as you are with the camera, combine the two and create a blog. You can earn money through advertising, but you can also generate additional hype for another income avenue like an eBook.

15. Share affiliate links

If you do build a photography blog or popular social media page, sign up for your favorite photography stores affiliate program. You can check out our online blogging course if you need more direction with respect to creating a professional photography blog. When you share a link to recommend a particular item, you’ll receive a small percentage. Amazon has a popular affiliate program.

16. Take product photography photos

The growth of the internet means a growing number of online stores, and those stores need good images of their products. Pitch websites that operate locally, or work with a company willing to ship products to you.

17. Join online job boards

Photography-related jobs are sometimes posted on job boards like Upwork and Freelancer. Join and keep an eye on the opportunities. Some positions are local, though there’s often some that can be done from anywhere on the globe.

18. Generate potential job leads with Flickr and 500px

By building a big following on photo sharing websites, many photographers have generated paid leads. Sure, you won’t earn money simply by uploading to Flickr, but you could begin building a following that will later lead to paid work.

19. Sell photos to magazines

Magazines need a variety of different high-quality photos. Search for different publications to pitch to online. Take a look at the magazine first to get an idea of the type of images they publish.

20. Sell canvas and other wall art on Etsy

Photography is an art—so why not sell on the arts and crafts focused platform, Etsy? It’s a popular option for wall art, but you could sell anything you can create with your images here, including greeting cards.

21. Snap photos for local businesses websites

Photos speak volumes, and so do bad photos. Drop off business cards at local businesses and let them know you’ll snap magazine-worthy shots for their website.

22. Create and sell a calendar

Sell a calendar featuring your images, either through an established company, or by creating your own. If you create your own, choose a theme for the calendar, like a location or type of image.

23. Offer consultation and image critiques

New photographers may be able to tell that their images aren’t the best, but aren’t sure exactly why. Offer to review photos with tips for improvement for a small fee.

24. Sell images on eBay

Don’t forget one of the most popular online marketplaces—you can auction your images on eBay too. Prints, canvases—again, there are a lot of options here.

25. Sell fine art shots on online galleries

It can be hard to sell fine art prints without a following. Online galleries can help introduce people to your work, and do the selling work for you too. Some of the popular options are Fine art America and Image Kind.

26. Create T-shirts and other products with your images

You’re not limited to just selling prints and canvas. Put your shot on a T-shirt, a coffee mug or a postcard. Companies like Zazzle and Cafe Press are popular options.

27. Sell images from your own website

Keep more of the profit for yourself and sell your photos from your own website. Platforms like Photocrati and Photoshelter are popular options.

28. Bid on local work

Even if you’d like to work locally in a more traditional photography career path, you can use the internet to find new work. Sites like Thumbtack allow photographers to bid on work for a small fee.
Photography is creative, so, why not be creative with your income and pursue a non-traditional photography income online? While some options are only good for a bit of spending money, many photographers have made their entire careers thorough other online options. Now, get to work!

This One-Day Phonics workshop for teachers is design to train teachers on phonics and the steps for teaching the 44 sounds in English language and their most common spelling pattern. Through these programs, teachers can learn how to introduce phonics to students through various phonological activities in order to ensure the literacy development of children. Phonics training for teachers unlocks every teacher’s potential to achieve greater success in the classroom while teaching the English language to the children.

WHAT IS PHONICS?

Scientific studies have repeatedly found that explicit systematic phonics instruction is the most effective way to teach children how to read. Without it, some children will end up having serious reading difficulties. But what is explicit systematic phonics? Let’s break this term down.

Phonics – teaching children the sounds made by individual letter or letter groups (for example, the letter “c” makes a k sound), and teaching children how to merge separate sounds together to make it one word (for example, blending the sounds k, a, t makes CAT). This type of phonics teaching is often referred to as “synthetic phonics”.

Explicit – directly teaching children the specific associations between letters and sounds, rather than expecting them to gain this knowledge indirectly.

Systematic – English has a complicated spelling system. It is important to teach letter sound mappings in a systematic way, beginning with simple letter sound rules and then moving onto more complex associations.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?

Phonics instruction teaches children how to decode letters into their respective sounds, a skill that is essential for them to read unfamiliar words by themselves. Keep in mind that most words are in fact unfamiliar to early readers in print, even if they have spoken knowledge of the word. Having letter-sound knowledge will allow children to make the link between the unfamiliar print words to their spoken knowledge.

Another aspect that is rarely discussed is that the letter-sound decoding process itself is a learning mechanism. Phonics is important not only because this knowledge allows children to read on their own, but it is also a learning mechanism that builds up a good print word dictionary that can be quickly accessed.
