Limitations of Disadvantages of E-Commerce Though e-commerce offers many advantages to customers, business, society and nation, there are still some areas of concern that need to be addressed. The following are some of the limitations or disadvantages of e-commerce. 1. Security The biggest drawback of e-commerce is the issue of security. People fear to provide personal and financial information, even though several improvements have been made in relation to data encryption. Certain websites do not have capabilities to conduct authentic transactions. Fear of providing credit card information and risk of identity limit the growth of e-commerce. 2. Lack of privacy Many websites do not have high encryption for secure online transaction or to protect online identity. Some websites illegally collect statistics on consumers without their permission. Lack of privacy discourages people to use internet for conducting commercial transactions, 3. Tax issue Sales tax is another bigger issue when the buyer and seller are situated in different locations. Computation of sales tax poses problems when the buyer and seller are in different states. Another factor is that physical stores will lose business if web purchases are free from tax. 4. Fear People fear to operate in a paperless and faceless electronic world. Some of the business organizations do not have physical existence, People do not know with whom they are conducting commercial transactions. This aspect makes people to opt physical stores for purchases. 5. Product suitability People have to rely on electronic images to purchase products. Sometimes, when the products are delivered, the product may not match with electronic images. Finally, it may not suit the needs of the buyers. The lack of ‘touch and feel’ prevent people from online shopping. 6. Cultural obstacles E-commerce attracts customers from all over the world. Habits and culture of the people differ from nation to nation. They also pose linguistic problems. Thus, differences in culture create obstacles to both the business and the consumers. 7. High Labour cost Highly talented and technically qualified workforce are required to develop and manage the websites of the organization. Since internet provides a lot of job opportunities, business organizations have to incur a lot of expenses to retain a talented pool of employees, 8. Legal issues The cyber laws that govern the e-commerce transactions are not very clear and vary from country to country. These legal issues prevent people from entering into electronic contracts. 9. Technical limitations Some protocol is not standardized around the world. Certain software used by vendor to show electronic images may not be a common one. It may not be possible to browse through a particular page due to lack of standardized software. Insufficient telecommunication bandwidth may also pose technical problems. 9. Huge technological cost It is difficult to merge electronic business with traditional business. Technological infrastructure may be expensive and huge cost has to be incurred to keep pace with ever changing technology. It is necessary to allocate more funds for technological advancement to remain competitive in the electronic world. ... E-commerce Lacks Personal Touch Not that all physical retailers have a personal approach, but I do know of several retailers who value human relationship. As a result, shopping at those retail outlets is reassuring and refreshing. Clicking on "Buy Now," and piling up products in virtual shopping carts, is just not the same for me. Different people sing to different tunes. The demise of the personal touch in online transactions can be the biggest disadvantage of e-commerce. E-commerce Delays Goods Unless you are using a website to merely order a pizza online, e-commerce websites deliver take a lot longer to get the goods into your hands. Even with express shipping, the earliest you get goods is usually "tomorrow" (with the exception of some Amazon services). But if you want to buy a pen because you need to write something right now, you cannot buy it off an e-commerce website. Likewise with candy that you want to eat now, a book that you want to read tonight, a birthday gift that you need this evening... You get the idea. An exception to this rule is in the case of digital goods, e.g. an ebook or a music file. In this case, e-commerce might actually be faster than purchasing goods from a physical store. Many Goods Cannot Be Purchased Online Despite its many conveniences, there are goods that you cannot buy online. Most of these would be in the categories of "perishable" or "odd-sized." Think about it, you cannot order a popsicle (also referred to as an ice pop or ice lolly) or a dining table set. Well, you could order both of them online, but consider the inconvenience. The popsicle would have to be transported in refrigerated trucks. Unless the seller was willing to make a huge loss, the cost of shipping that popsicle would far exceed the cost of the popsicle. Likewise, a dining table set can certainly be purchased online. In some cases, the cost of logistics is bearable. But if you have to return the furniture, you will get well-acquainted with the inconvenience of e-commerce. E-commerce Does Not Allow You to Experience the Product Before Purchase You cannot touch the fabric of the garment you want to buy. You cannot check how the shoe feels on your feet. You cannot "test" the perfume that you want to buy. You get the idea. In many cases, customers want to experience the product before purchase. E-commerce does not allow that. If you buy a music system, you cannot play it online to check if it sounds right? If you are purchasing a home-theater system, you would much rather sit in the "experience center" that several retail stores set up. Anyone Can Set Up an e-Commerce Website We live in an era where online storefront providers bring you the ability to set up an e-commerce store within minutes. I have tried it, and it is possible to set up a basic store in under 10 minutes. But if anybody can set up a store, how do I know that the store I am purchasing from is genuine? The lowered barriers to entry might be a great attraction to the aspiring e-commerce entrepreneur. But for the buyer, reliability can be an issue. This could lead customers to restrict their online purchases to famous e-commerce websites. Security When making an online purchase, you have to provide at least your credit card information and mailing address. In many cases, e-commerce websites are able to harvest other information about your online behavior and preferences. This could lead to credit card fraud, or worse, identity theft. ... E-Commerce disadvantages can be broadly classified in two major categories: Technical disadvantages Non-Technical disadvantages e-commerce disadvantages Technical Disadvantages There can be lack of system security, reliability or standards owing to poor implementation of e-Commerce. Software development industry is still evolving and keeps changing rapidly. In many countries, network bandwidth might cause an issue as there is insufficient telecommunication bandwidth available. Special types of web server or other software might be required by the vendor setting the e-commerce environment apart from network servers. Sometimes, it becomes difficult to integrate E-Commerce software or website with the existing application or databases. There could be software/hardware compatibility issue as some E-Commerce software may be incompatible with some operating system or any other component. Non-Technical Disadvantages Initial cost: The cost of creating / building E-Commerce application in-house may be very high. There could be delay in launching the E-Commerce application due to mistakes, lack of experience. User resistance: User may not trust the site being unknown faceless seller. Such mistrust makes it difficult to make user switch from physical stores to online/virtual stores. Security/ Privacy: Difficult to ensure security or privacy on online transactions. Lack of touch or feel of products during online shopping. E-Commerce applications are still evolving and changing rapidly. Internet access is still not cheaper and is inconvenient to use for many potential customers like one living in remote villages. ...... Any one, good or bad, can easily start a business. And there are many bad sites which eat up customers’ money. There is no guarantee of product quality. Mechanical failures can cause unpredictable effects on the total processes. As there is minimum chance of direct customer to company interactions, customer loyalty is always on a check. There are many hackers who look for opportunities, and thus an ecommerce site, service, payment gateways, all are always prone to attack. .... The Disadvantages #1. Security Customers need to be confident and trust the provider of payment method. Sometimes, we can be tricked. Examine on integrity and reputation of the web stores before you decide to buy. #2. Scalability of System A company definitely needs a well developed website to support numbers of customers at a time. If your web destination is not well enough, you better forget it. #3. Integrity on Data and System Customers need secure access all the time. In addition to it, protection to data is also essential. Unless the transaction can provide it, we should refuse for e-commerce. #4. Products People People who prefer and focus on product will not buy online. They will want to feel, try, and sit on their new couch and bed. #5. Customer Service and Relation Problem They sometimes forget how essential to build loyal relationship with customers. Without loyalty from customers, they will not survive the business. The disadvantages are not impossible to avoid. If we have enough management on risks, we may really get a lot more advantages from e-commerce. The advantages are surely teasing, and we will enjoy such easy transaction these days. Enjoy more your internet browsing and enjoy more your e-commerce activities! .... |
