Business › Why ₦1 Million No Longer Feels Like Serious Money In Nigeria by yarofearless(op): 3:58pm On Aug 30
Having ₦1 million in the bank once felt like a major financial milestone. Today, that same amount can disappear surprisingly quickly after rent, food, transportation, electricity and other basic expenses are paid.

The reason is not that ₦1 million has literally become worthless. Its purchasing power has fallen as prices have risen, meaning the same amount of money buys less than it used to.

Nigeria’s latest official statistics show the scale of the pressure. The National Bureau of Statistics reported headline inflation of 15.43 per cent and food inflation of 20.31 per cent under its rebased Consumer Price Index.

That means households are still facing significant increases in the cost of essential goods and services, even as the headline inflation rate is far below the levels recorded during the earlier phase of Nigeria’s inflation crisis.

₦1 million can disappear quickly

Consider someone receiving ₦1 million as a one-off payment.

If that person has to pay rent, buy food, handle transportation, pay electricity and water bills, purchase household items and deal with unexpected expenses, the money can quickly shrink.

For someone living in an expensive city, rent alone can consume a substantial portion of the money.

For a family, food expenses can take another large share.

Then come school fees, healthcare, transport, phone bills, internet, fuel and other regular obligations.

The result is simple.

₦1 million may look large on a bank statement, but what matters is how much it can actually buy.

Inflation changes the meaning of money

Inflation does not take money directly from someone’s bank account.

Instead, it reduces what that money can purchase.

If the prices of the things a household regularly buys increase, the household needs more money to maintain the same standard of living.

This is why someone earning ₦1 million today may not necessarily feel as financially comfortable as someone who earned the same nominal amount years ago.

The NBS has also continued to publish monthly food-price data based on prices collected across all 774 local government areas and the Federal Capital Territory.

That data matters because national averages do not always reflect what individual households experience.

A family in Lagos may face a very different cost structure from a family in Bauchi, Kano or Enugu.

The salary problem

The biggest issue is the gap between income and expenses.

If wages rise more slowly than the cost of living, workers become poorer in real terms even when their nominal salaries increase.

A person can receive a salary increase and still feel financially worse off if food, rent, transport and other necessities rise faster.

This is one reason the phrase “₦1 million is not what it used to be” resonates with many Nigerians.

The number has remained the same.

The economy around it has changed.

Why young Nigerians feel it most

Young workers and entrepreneurs are particularly exposed to the problem.

Many are trying to pay rent, support parents, build businesses, save money and plan for marriage or home ownership at the same time.

Someone who manages to save ₦1 million may discover that it is not enough to accomplish any of those goals.

It may provide temporary breathing room, but it may not provide lasting financial security.

This has also changed how Nigerians think about wealth.

Owning a million naira is no longer necessarily viewed as evidence of financial independence.

For many people, the bigger question is:

How long can the money keep me going?

But ₦1 million is still significant

It is important not to confuse declining purchasing power with saying that ₦1 million is insignificant.

For millions of Nigerians, ₦1 million remains a substantial amount of money.

It can pay important bills, fund a small business, cover emergencies or provide temporary financial stability.

The problem is that it may not stretch as far as people expect.

And that distinction matters.

The real story is not that ₦1 million has become “small”.

The real story is that the cost of maintaining a normal life has become much more expensive.

The uncomfortable question

Nigeria’s economic debate often focuses on GDP growth, inflation rates, exchange rates and government reforms.

Those numbers matter.

But there is another measurement that ordinary Nigerians understand immediately:

What can my money buy?

The NBS says Nigeria’s real GDP grew by 3.89 per cent year-on-year in the first quarter of 2026, while the non-oil sector accounted for 96.08 per cent of real GDP.

Economic growth is important.

But growth alone does not automatically mean every household becomes financially comfortable.

For the average Nigerian, the ultimate test is whether income is growing fast enough to keep up with the cost of living.

That is why ₦1 million can feel both like a lot of money and not enough money at the same time.

The figure is still ₦1 million.

But the life it can buy has changed.

Crime › From Billionaire’s Son To Global Terrorist: The Shocking Story Of Umar Farouk by yarofearless(op): 1:13pm On Aug 30
On Christmas Day 2009, passengers aboard Northwest Airlines Flight 253 were preparing to land in Detroit after a routine transatlantic journey from Amsterdam.

Few knew that a 23-year-old Nigerian sitting among them was about to trigger an event that would reshape global airport security and become one of the most infamous terrorism cases of the 21st century.

His name was Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab.

Today, many Nigerians know him simply as the “Underwear Bomber.”

A privileged background

Abdulmutallab was not raised in poverty.

Born in Lagos in 1986, he came from one of Nigeria’s wealthiest families. His father, Alhaji Umaru Mutallab, was a prominent banker and former chairman of First Bank of Nigeria. Abdulmutallab studied at elite schools before attending University College London in the United Kingdom.

Those who knew him described him as intelligent, quiet and deeply religious.

Nothing about his background suggested he would one day become the face of a global terrorism scare.

The Christmas Day plot

On December 25, 2009, Abdulmutallab boarded Northwest Airlines Flight 253 bound for Detroit with 289 people on board.

Hidden inside specially prepared underwear was PETN, a powerful explosive. Investigators later said he attempted to detonate the device as the aircraft approached Detroit. Fortunately, the bomb failed to explode as intended and instead caused a fire. Passengers and crew quickly subdued him before disaster could occur.

Authorities later revealed that the device contained enough explosive material to potentially cause catastrophic damage if it had functioned properly.

The warning that came before the attack

One of the most controversial aspects of the case emerged after the failed bombing.

Reports showed that Abdulmutallab’s father had previously warned U.S. authorities that his son had become radicalised and might pose a threat. Despite the warning, Abdulmutallab was able to travel and board the Detroit-bound flight.

The revelation triggered intense criticism of intelligence agencies and led to major reviews of terrorism watchlists and airline security procedures.

The trial and life sentence

In 2011, Abdulmutallab unexpectedly pleaded guilty to multiple terrorism-related charges, including attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction and attempting to murder everyone on board the aircraft.

A U.S. federal court later sentenced him to four consecutive life sentences plus 50 years without the possibility of parole. He remains incarcerated in a high-security prison in the United States.

How the attack changed air travel

The failed bombing had consequences far beyond the courtroom.

Governments around the world tightened airport security measures. Full-body scanners became more common at international airports. Passenger screening procedures were expanded, and intelligence agencies increased information sharing regarding potential threats.

Many aviation experts believe the incident exposed weaknesses in global security systems that authorities had previously overlooked.

Why the story still matters

Nearly two decades later, the Abdulmutallab case remains one of the most shocking examples of how a single individual nearly altered history.

Had the device worked as intended, hundreds of people could have died over American soil on Christmas Day.

Instead, a combination of technical failure, quick-thinking passengers and crew intervention prevented what might have become one of the deadliest aviation attacks since September 11.

For Nigeria, the case remains a reminder that extremism can emerge from unexpected places, even among individuals with privilege, education and opportunity.

And for the rest of the world, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab remains the man whose failed mission changed airport security forever.

Politics › Nigeria’s Richest Local Governments: The Councils Controlling Billions Of Naira by yarofearless(op): 11:17am On Aug 30
When Nigerians discuss wealth in government, attention usually focuses on the presidency, governors and federal ministries.

Yet some of the country’s most financially powerful public institutions are local governments.

Every month, Nigeria’s 774 local government areas receive allocations from the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC). Some also generate significant revenue through markets, businesses, property rates, permits, transportation activities and commercial taxes.

The result is a striking reality: a handful of local governments now control budgets running into billions of naira annually, making them wealthier than many public institutions across the country.

Why Lagos dominates the rankings

If there is one state that consistently dominates discussions about wealthy local governments, it is Lagos.

Data analyses of local government revenues show that Lagos councils receive the highest allocations and generate some of the strongest local revenues in the country due to population size, commercial activity and property values.

In fact, all 20 Lagos local governments ranked among the highest recipients of FAAC revenue during the first half of 2024.

The richest local governments in Nigeria

1. Alimosho (Lagos State)

Alimosho is widely regarded as Nigeria’s richest local government.

Home to millions of residents and thousands of businesses, it combines a large population with substantial commercial activity.

According to revenue analyses, Alimosho received about ₦11.13 billion in FAAC allocations in the first half of 2024 alone, making it the highest-earning local government in Nigeria.

2. Ajeromi-Ifelodun (Lagos State)

Located in metropolitan Lagos, Ajeromi-Ifelodun benefits from dense population, commerce and economic activity.

The council received approximately ₦8.90 billion in FAAC allocations during the same period.

3. Kosofe (Lagos State)

Kosofe has become one of the strongest revenue-generating councils in Lagos because of its strategic location and growing business environment.

It received roughly ₦8.80 billion in allocations.

4. Mushin (Lagos State)

Mushin remains one of Nigeria’s busiest commercial hubs, contributing to its strong financial position among local governments.

5. Oshodi-Isolo (Lagos State)

The presence of major transportation routes, markets and business activities has helped Oshodi-Isolo become one of Nigeria’s highest-earning councils.

6. Ojo (Lagos State)

Ojo’s strategic location and economic activities contribute significantly to its revenue profile.

7. Ikorodu (Lagos State)

Rapid urban growth and industrial development have transformed Ikorodu into one of Nigeria’s wealthiest local governments.

8. Surulere (Lagos State)

Known for its commercial importance and real estate value, Surulere continues to rank among the country’s richest councils.

9. Ikeja (Lagos State)

As the capital of Lagos State and home to major corporate headquarters, government offices and the international airport, Ikeja remains a major revenue center.

10. Abuja Municipal Area Council (FCT)

Outside Lagos, the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) is frequently cited among Nigeria’s richest local governments because of its role as the administrative center of the Federal Capital Territory.

Where does the money come from?

The wealth of these councils comes from multiple sources:

Federal allocations (FAAC)
Property and tenement rates
Market levies
Business permits
Transportation-related fees
Local taxes
Commercial activities
Internally generated revenue (IGR)
Lagos councils enjoy a significant advantage because they operate within Nigeria’s largest urban economy. The concentration of businesses, industries and high-value properties gives them access to revenue streams unavailable to most local governments.

Does more money mean better development?

Not necessarily.

One of the biggest debates surrounding local government finances is whether increased revenue translates into improved roads, healthcare, education and public services.

Governance experts argue that while some councils have benefited from strong revenue growth, questions remain about transparency, accountability and service delivery. Studies examining local government revenue performance have found that revenue growth does not always lead to proportional development outcomes.

The bigger picture

The story of Nigeria’s richest local governments is not just about money.

It is about power.

The councils that control the largest revenues often wield significant influence over local development, infrastructure projects and grassroots politics.

As calls for greater local government autonomy continue across the country, the financial strength of these councils is likely to become even more important.

When it comes to local government wealth in Nigeria, Lagos remains in a league of its own.

Politics › Why Is Tinubu Fighting The Release Of His FBI Records? by yarofearless(op): 5:59pm On Aug 29
Few political controversies have generated as much debate in recent years as the ongoing battle over the release of records linked to President Bola Tinubu in the United States.

For months, courts, federal agencies and lawyers have been locked in a legal dispute over whether certain FBI and law enforcement records connected to decades-old allegations should be released to the public. Court filings show that the FBI and other agencies have argued that some records contain sensitive information protected under Freedom of Information Act exemptions.

The controversy has fueled a simple but powerful question across social media, political circles and public discussions:

Why does Tinubu oppose the release of the records?

What we know so far

First, it is important to separate allegations from established facts.

The current case before the U.S. court is primarily a Freedom of Information Act dispute. It is not a criminal trial and the court is not determining whether Tinubu committed a drug trafficking offence. Tinubu has not been convicted of drug trafficking in the United States.

What is being debated is whether government agencies should release documents requested by transparency campaigners and journalists.

Court records show that the FBI has argued that releasing certain materials could expose investigative methods, confidential sources and other protected information. The agency has relied on multiple legal exemptions to resist full disclosure.

Why would anyone oppose disclosure?

There are several possible reasons why a public figure might resist the release of government records.

The first is privacy.

American law recognizes that individuals can have privacy interests in government records, even when those records concern matters that were previously reported or investigated. U.S. courts have repeatedly weighed privacy concerns against public interest when deciding whether records should be released.

The second is reputation.

Even when no criminal conviction exists, the release of investigative records can reignite old controversies, generate damaging headlines and shape public perception.

The third is legal strategy.

Lawyers often challenge disclosure requests if they believe records could be incomplete, misleading, misinterpreted or unfairly presented outside their original context.

Why transparency advocates want the records released

Supporters of disclosure argue that Tinubu is not an ordinary private citizen.

He is the President of Africa’s most populous country.

They contend that information relating to allegations involving a sitting president is a matter of public interest and that citizens deserve access to as much information as the law permits.

This argument has gained traction because courts have frequently recognized that public officials have a lower expectation of privacy regarding matters connected to their public roles.

The political dimension

The controversy has become larger than the documents themselves.

Opposition figures view the case as a test of transparency and accountability.

Tinubu’s supporters argue that the issue is being amplified for political reasons and that decades-old allegations have already been extensively discussed in public.

As a result, the legal battle has evolved into a broader debate about public disclosure, political accountability and the limits of privacy for elected leaders.

The question that remains unanswered

The biggest mystery is not whether records exist.

Government agencies have acknowledged possessing records and have asked courts to allow some materials to remain protected under existing legal exemptions.

The real question is what information, if any, will ultimately become public.

Until the courts make a final determination, Nigerians are left with competing claims, political arguments and legal filings.

For many citizens, the issue is no longer just about old records.

It is about whether public officials should be able to keep potentially significant information out of public view and where the balance between privacy and accountability should be drawn.

Education › 10 Courses Producing The Highest-Paying Jobs In Nigeria In 2026 by yarofearless(op): 11:07am On Aug 29
For many students, choosing a university course is one of the biggest decisions they will ever make.

While passion remains important, earning potential has become an increasingly important factor as families grapple with rising living costs and a competitive job market.

The truth is that no course guarantees wealth. However, some degrees consistently lead to industries where salaries are significantly higher than the national average. From oil and gas to technology and medicine, these fields continue to produce some of Nigeria’s highest earners.

1. Computer science and software engineering

Technology has created more new millionaires in Nigeria over the last decade than almost any other sector.

Software developers, AI engineers, cybersecurity specialists and data scientists are increasingly working for international companies while living in Nigeria. Many earn salaries in dollars, making tech one of the most attractive career paths today.

2. Medicine and surgery

Medicine remains one of the most respected and financially rewarding professions in Nigeria.

Doctors, surgeons and medical specialists continue to enjoy strong demand both locally and abroad. The global shortage of healthcare professionals has further increased opportunities for Nigerian-trained doctors.

3. Petroleum engineering

Despite the global energy transition, Nigeria’s oil and gas industry remains one of the country’s highest-paying sectors.

Petroleum engineers working with major energy companies often earn salaries far above the national average.

4. Law

A law degree can open doors to corporate law, oil and gas law, technology law and international arbitration.

While earnings vary, top lawyers and legal advisers working with major corporations often command substantial salaries.

5. Accounting

Accounting remains one of the safest and most versatile career choices.

Professionals who combine a degree with certifications such as ICAN or ACCA are highly sought after by banks, multinational firms and consulting companies.

6. Data science and artificial intelligence

Data is becoming one of the world’s most valuable resources.

Banks, fintech companies, telecommunications firms and international employers are aggressively hiring data scientists and AI specialists, making this one of the fastest-growing high-income careers.

7. Pharmacy

Pharmacists continue to enjoy strong employment opportunities in hospitals, pharmaceutical companies, research institutions and regulatory agencies.

The healthcare sector’s continued expansion has strengthened the profession’s earning potential.

8. Electrical and electronic engineering

Nigeria’s power, telecommunications and infrastructure sectors continue to create opportunities for skilled engineers.

Professionals with expertise in renewable energy, telecommunications and industrial systems are particularly in demand.

9. Economics and finance

Economics graduates who acquire additional financial qualifications often move into investment banking, financial analysis, risk management and corporate finance.

These positions are among the highest-paying roles in Nigeria’s financial sector.

10. Nursing science

Nursing has become one of the most internationally mobile professions available to Nigerian graduates.

Countries including the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and the United States continue to recruit Nigerian nurses, creating opportunities for significantly higher earnings abroad.

What students should know before choosing a course

Experts caution that salary should not be the only factor when selecting a degree.

Skills, professional certifications, work experience and adaptability often matter as much as the course itself. A graduate from a lower-paying field with strong skills may outperform someone from a traditionally lucrative profession.

The job market is also evolving rapidly. Fields linked to artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, renewable energy and digital services are expected to create some of the highest-paying opportunities over the next decade.

For students preparing for admission, the smartest approach may be to combine personal interest with market demand. In today’s economy, the most valuable graduates are often those who possess both specialised knowledge and practical skills employers are willing to pay for.

NYSC › NYSC Batch C Registration Begins September 7: Step By Step Guide by yarofearless(op): 3:58pm On Aug 28
Thousands of Nigerian graduates are preparing for the next phase of their National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) journey following reports that registration for the 2026 Batch C mobilisation exercise is expected to begin on September 7. Prospective corps members are advised to monitor official NYSC channels for confirmation and updates.

For many first-time applicants, the registration process can be confusing. Errors made during registration can delay mobilisation, affect deployment or create challenges at orientation camp.

Here is a complete guide to help prospective corps members register successfully.

Step 1: Confirm your name is on the Senate list

Before attempting registration, ensure your institution has uploaded your details to the NYSC Senate/Academic Board list.

If your name is not on the approved list, you will not be able to proceed with online registration. NYSC has repeatedly stressed that only graduates whose details have been uploaded by their institutions are eligible to register.

Step 2: Visit the NYSC registration portal

Go to the official NYSC portal and select the registration option for Prospective Corps Members. The portal can be accessed through:

Create an account using a valid email address and phone number that you can access throughout the mobilisation process.

Step 3: Complete your biodata

Fill in all required personal information accurately, including:

Full name
Date of birth
State of origin
Local government area
Marital status
Contact information
Academic details
Any mismatch between your school records, NIN details and NYSC information could create delays later.

Step 4: Upload required documents

Applicants may be required to upload:

Passport photograph
Academic credentials
Professional certificates where applicable
Supporting documents for special requests
Foreign-trained graduates will have additional credential verification requirements.

Step 5: Capture biometrics

Biometric capture is one of the most important parts of registration.

Ensure:

Fingers are clean
Scanner captures all fingerprints properly
Information displayed matches your records
Biometric issues are among the most common reasons registrations fail.

Politics › Wike’s Ally, Former BCDA Boss And A $878,659 US Mansion: What We Know by yarofearless(op): 12:40pm On Aug 28
A property linked to former Border Communities Development Agency Director-General Dakorinama Alabo George has raised fresh questions about the assets of a Nigerian political appointee whose career has taken him from the Rivers State government to a federal agency.

Property records cited in a new investigation place George as the owner of a five-bedroom residence in Katy, Texas, with an estimated value of $878,659.

But the headline figure requires some context.

The available records do not, by themselves, establish that George paid $878,659 to acquire the property.

What they show, according to the documents cited in the investigation, is a residential property associated with George that has an estimated market value of $878,659.

That distinction is important in any fact-based examination of the allegation.

What the property records show

The property is identified as a single-family residence in the Pine Mill Ranch area of Fort Bend County, Texas.

The house reportedly sits on a 0.24-acre lot and contains approximately 5,048 square feet of living space.

It has five bedrooms, three bathrooms and an attached two-car garage.

Records cited in the investigation indicate that the property was built in 2013 and is owner-occupied.

The reported address is 4307 Lone Creek Hill Ct, Katy, Texas 77494.

The property is said to have an estimated value of $878,659, while the surrounding area has a substantially lower median home value.

The investigation also places George’s ownership of the property at roughly 11 years and nine months, suggesting an acquisition around 2014.

That timing is one of the most important details in the story.

Who is Alabo George?

George is a Rivers State politician and construction professional whose rise in public life has been closely associated with former Rivers State Governor and current Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike.

Before joining the Rivers State cabinet, George worked at the Niger Delta Development Commission.

Wike later appointed him Commissioner for Works in Rivers State, placing him at the centre of the state’s infrastructure administration.

George subsequently pursued the Rivers governorship.

He contested the Peoples Democratic Party governorship primary in 2022 and finished behind Siminalayi Fubara.

He later moved to the federal level after being appointed Director-General of the Border Communities Development Agency.

His political career returned to the spotlight in 2026 after he became involved in the contest for the All Progressives Congress governorship ticket in Rivers State.

George eventually withdrew from that race.

President Bola Tinubu subsequently appointed former lawmaker Abdulrazak Sa’ad Namdas as his replacement at the BCDA.

The change triggered an unusual leadership dispute after George continued to insist that he remained the lawful occupant of the agency’s office.

The Presidency rejected that position and maintained that Namdas remained the new head of the agency.

Why the Texas property matters

Owning property abroad is not, by itself, evidence of corruption or wrongdoing.

That point needs to be made clearly.

Nigerian public officials are not automatically prohibited from owning houses or other assets outside the country.

The important issue is whether the property was properly declared and whether its acquisition can be legitimately explained by the official’s lawful income, investments, gifts or approved financing arrangements.

That is where Nigeria’s asset declaration framework becomes relevant.

Public officers covered by the relevant provisions are required to declare their assets and liabilities.

The Code of Conduct framework also provides for declarations at specified stages of public service.

Where questions arise about an asset acquired after declaration, the circumstances surrounding its acquisition become critical.

Therefore, the existence of George’s Texas property does not establish a criminal offence.

The questions are more specific.

Was the property declared?

When exactly was it acquired?

How was it financed?

What was its purchase price at the time?

What was George’s income and financial position when the transaction occurred?

And does the information contained in his official asset declaration correspond with the property records?

Those are the questions that would need documentary answers.

The $878,659 figure needs to be understood

One of the easiest ways for a corruption story to become misleading is to confuse an asset’s present estimated value with its original purchase price.

The two figures can be dramatically different.

A property purchased more than a decade ago can appreciate substantially because of changes in the local housing market, inflation, development and demand.

Consequently, saying that George “purchased an $878,659 mansion” would require evidence showing that $878,659 was actually the amount paid at the time of purchase.

The available reporting reviewed for this article does not establish that.

What is established in the cited property information is the reported estimated value of the residence.

That makes the underlying ownership question more important than the headline valuation.

The 2014 timeline raises another question

The reported acquisition period is around 2014.

That predates George’s appointment as Rivers State Commissioner for Works in 2015.

This is another important piece of context.

It means the existence of the property cannot automatically be presented as an asset acquired while he was serving as a commissioner.

If the approximately 2014 acquisition date is accurate, the relevant financial circumstances would have to be examined from that period rather than simply linking the property to his later public appointments.

George’s career before joining the Rivers State cabinet included work with the NDDC.

That background may be relevant when examining how the property was acquired and financed.

But it would be improper to infer the source of the funds without documentary evidence.

The bigger question is transparency

This is ultimately less about whether a Nigerian public official is allowed to own an expensive American house and more about transparency.

If the property was acquired lawfully and properly declared, documentary evidence should be capable of establishing that.

If it was not declared, or if the declared information conflicts with verifiable property records, that would raise a different and more serious issue.

The appropriate authorities would then have grounds to examine the circumstances surrounding the acquisition.

The Code of Conduct Bureau is particularly relevant because asset declarations by public officers fall within its mandate.

Any proper investigation would therefore need to compare the property records against George’s official declaration rather than relying solely on the property’s estimated market value.

George’s political history adds public interest

The controversy comes at a politically sensitive time.

George has been at the centre of a dispute over the leadership of the BCDA after President Tinubu announced Namdas as his replacement.

The Presidency has maintained that Namdas remains the appointed Director-General, while George has disputed the circumstances surrounding his supposed resignation and replacement.

That dispute has already placed George’s public role under scrutiny.

The emergence of questions about a US property therefore adds another layer to the scrutiny surrounding a politically connected former federal appointee.

But political controversy should not be allowed to substitute for evidence.

The property issue needs to stand on its own facts.

What has not been established

Several things remain unproven based on the information currently available.

There is no established evidence in the material reviewed showing that the property was purchased with stolen Nigerian government funds.

There is also no evidence establishing that George acquired the property through corruption.

The reported $878,659 figure should not be described as the amount he necessarily paid for the house without a purchase document confirming it.

There is also an unanswered question over whether the property appeared in his official asset declaration.

Those questions require documentary verification.

What should happen next?

If the property is properly declared, the matter should be relatively straightforward.

The declaration should provide a basis for establishing when and how the property was acquired.

If there is a discrepancy between the declaration and the property records, the Code of Conduct Bureau can determine whether further action is warranted.

For a public official, transparency is ultimately the strongest defence against allegations surrounding unexplained wealth.

The central fact, therefore, is not simply that a Nigerian political figure is linked to a nearly $900,000 property in Texas.

It is whether the ownership, acquisition and financing of that property are consistent with his documented financial history and statutory asset declarations.

Crime › Charge Me To Court: Verydarkman Fires Back At Police Over Checkpoint Kidnapping by yarofearless(op): 1:20pm On Aug 27
Social media activist Martins Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), has escalated his confrontation with the Nigeria Police Force, daring authorities to take him to court over his controversial remarks linking some police checkpoints to kidnapping operations across Nigeria.

The latest clash follows a formal demand by the police for evidence supporting claims allegedly made by the activist during discussions at the 2026 Nigerian Bar Association Annual General Conference in Port Harcourt. During the event, VeryDarkMan argued that certain criminals obtain information about travellers through checkpoint activities, raising concerns about possible security breaches that could aid kidnappers.

The Nigeria Police Force swiftly rejected the allegations, describing them as unsubstantiated and damaging to an institution responsible for protecting millions of Nigerians. The force invited the activist to provide proof of his claims and stated that any credible evidence submitted would be investigated thoroughly.

Rather than retreat from the controversy, VeryDarkMan responded defiantly, insisting that his comments reflected concerns shared by many Nigerians who have long questioned the effectiveness of highway checkpoints amid persistent kidnapping incidents. According to reports, the activist challenged the police to pursue legal action if they believed his comments were defamatory.

Police defend checkpoint operations

In its response, the police maintained that checkpoint personnel are deployed to prevent crime, detect criminal activities and protect travellers.

The force also noted that officers have frequently become targets of attacks by bandits, terrorists and kidnappers, arguing that it would be illogical to suggest institutional collaboration with criminal groups that routinely kill police personnel.

Police authorities acknowledged that individual officers found guilty of misconduct would face disciplinary measures and prosecution. However, they warned against sweeping accusations that could undermine public confidence in security institutions.

A debate that resonates with many Nigerians

The dispute has reignited a wider national conversation about insecurity and public trust in law enforcement.

Nigeria continues to grapple with kidnapping, banditry and violent crime in several regions. As a result, public frustration has grown over the years, particularly among citizens who regularly pass through multiple checkpoints on major highways while security challenges persist.

At the NBA conference where the controversy emerged, discussions reportedly focused on insecurity, accountability and the role of security agencies in protecting citizens. The exchange between VeryDarkMan and police representatives quickly became one of the most talked-about moments of the event.

The challenge ahead

The police have made it clear that allegations of collusion between officers and kidnappers require concrete evidence rather than public assertions. VeryDarkMan, on the other hand, appears unwilling to retract his comments and has instead doubled down on his position.

Whether the dispute develops into a legal battle or prompts a broader investigation remains uncertain. What is clear is that the confrontation has once again placed the spotlight on Nigeria’s worsening insecurity and the growing demand for accountability from both public institutions and outspoken critics.

Celebrities › Who Is Hajiya Mariya Dantata? The Life, Wealth And Legacy Of Dangote’s Mother by yarofearless(op): 11:42am On Aug 27
When Nigerians talk about wealth, business and philanthropy, the conversation often turns to Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote.

But behind the billionaire industrialist stands a woman whose influence stretches across generations of one of Nigeria’s most powerful business dynasties.

That woman is Hajiya Mariya Sanusi Dantata.

While many know her simply as Dangote’s mother, her story goes far beyond that title. She is a respected businesswoman, philanthropist and member of the legendary Dantata family, a dynasty whose wealth and influence predate Nigeria’s independence.

Born into Nigeria’s most influential business family

Hajiya Mariya was born into the famous Dantata family of Kano.

Her father was Alhaji Sanusi Dantata, one of Northern Nigeria’s most successful businessmen and a son of Alhassan Dantata, the merchant widely regarded as one of the richest men in West African history.

The Dantata family built its fortune through trading, transportation, agriculture and real estate long before Nigeria became independent.

For decades, the family controlled major trading networks across Northern Nigeria and West Africa, creating a business empire that has survived multiple generations.

The mother of Aliko Dangote

Hajiya Mariya married Mohammed Dangote, a businessman from another respected Kano trading family.

Their union produced Aliko Dangote, who would later become Africa’s richest man and founder of the Dangote Group.

Many accounts of Dangote’s rise credit his mother with helping shape his discipline, business mindset and commitment to hard work.

According to several reports, she played a significant role in guiding and supporting him during his formative years in business.

A successful businesswoman in her own right

Unlike many wealthy women who remain behind the scenes, Hajiya Mariya established herself as a respected figure in Nigeria’s business community.

She has served on the boards of several major companies and has long been regarded as one of the most influential women in Northern Nigeria’s business landscape.

Her reputation within Kano’s elite business circles extends far beyond her relationship with the Dangote family.

Those who know her often describe her as humble, disciplined and deeply committed to community development.

The philanthropist known for helping thousands

Perhaps no aspect of Hajiya Mariya’s life has earned more admiration than her philanthropy.

Over the years, she has funded schools, supported healthcare projects and assisted countless vulnerable families across Kano and beyond.

One of her most notable contributions was the donation of a hospital she built in Kano to the state government.

Reports also indicate that she sponsored the construction of a multi-million-naira mosque and regularly supports feeding programmes for thousands of people.

Her charitable work has earned her widespread respect among community leaders, religious organisations and beneficiaries.

Recognition and honours

In recognition of her contributions to society, Bayero University Kano awarded Hajiya Mariya an honorary doctorate degree.

The honour reflected decades of service in business, philanthropy and community development.

She is also widely regarded as one of the most influential women ever produced by Northern Nigeria’s business community.

The woman behind a business dynasty

Today, the Dantata family remains one of Africa’s most powerful business dynasties.

Its members include prominent entrepreneurs, industrialists and philanthropists whose influence extends across banking, construction, manufacturing, agriculture and energy.

At the heart of that legacy stands Hajiya Mariya Dantata.

While her son Aliko Dangote built one of Africa’s largest business empires, many believe the values that shaped his success were inherited from a mother who embodied discipline, generosity and entrepreneurial excellence.

For many Nigerians, Hajiya Mariya Dantata is more than the mother of a billionaire.

She is a symbol of the quiet influence, strength and vision that helped shape one of Africa’s greatest business success stories.

Politics › 10 Nigerian Politicians Who Faced Corruption Allegation But Remained Influential by yarofearless(op): 9:59am On Aug 27
Corruption remains one of Nigeria’s most persistent political issues. Over the years, numerous high-profile politicians have faced allegations, investigations, court cases, or public scrutiny over financial misconduct. Yet many have continued to dominate political conversations, win elections, secure appointments, or maintain influence within the country’s power structure.

It is important to note that allegations do not automatically imply guilt. Several politicians denied wrongdoing, while some cases were dismissed, withdrawn, unresolved, or remain before the courts.

Here are 10 Nigerian politicians who faced corruption allegations but continued to wield considerable political influence.

1. Bola Ahmed Tinubu

President Bola Tinubu has been the subject of scrutiny for decades over questions relating to his financial history and past investigations in the United States.

Despite repeated controversies and opposition attacks, Tinubu built one of Nigeria’s most formidable political networks, played a major role in the formation of the All Progressives Congress (APC), influenced multiple elections, and ultimately became Nigeria’s president in 2023.

His supporters argue that no Nigerian court has convicted him of corruption, while critics continue to demand greater transparency regarding historical records.

2. Atiku Abubakar

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has repeatedly faced allegations linked to public office and business dealings. Various accusations have emerged over the years, including claims raised by political opponents during election campaigns.

Atiku has consistently denied wrongdoing and has never been convicted of corruption. Despite the controversies, he has remained one of Nigeria’s most influential opposition figures and has contested for the presidency multiple times.

3. Orji Uzor Kalu

The former Abia State governor faced a long-running corruption case involving billions of naira in alleged diversion of public funds.

Although he was convicted by a Federal High Court in 2019, the Supreme Court later nullified the conviction on procedural grounds. Kalu retained his political relevance and continues to be a prominent figure within the Senate and national politics.

4. James Ibori

Former Delta State governor James Ibori remains one of the most discussed names in Nigeria’s anti-corruption history.

While Nigerian courts cleared him of several charges years ago, he was later convicted in the United Kingdom for money laundering offences. Despite the conviction, Ibori has continued to command influence in Delta State politics and remains a significant political figure in the Niger Delta.

5. Godswill Akpabio

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has faced allegations relating to financial management during his tenure as governor of Akwa Ibom State.

He has repeatedly denied wrongdoing and no conviction has been secured against him. Over the years, Akpabio has served as governor, minister, senator, and eventually rose to become President of the Senate, underscoring his enduring political strength.

6. Abdulrasheed Maina

Although better known as a public official than an elected politician, Maina became a politically connected figure after the pension fraud scandal that dominated national headlines.

Despite facing investigations and prosecution, his case exposed how individuals accused of major financial crimes could maintain access to influential networks for extended periods.

7. Ali Modu Sheriff

The former Borno State governor has at different times faced allegations and intense political criticism, including accusations relating to security issues in the North East.

Sheriff denied the allegations and was never convicted of terrorism-related offences. He remained politically active, leading political parties and participating in major national political negotiations.

8. Joshua Dariye

Former Plateau State governor Joshua Dariye was convicted on corruption charges related to the diversion of public funds.

Despite his legal troubles, Dariye remained politically influential for years and continued serving in public office before his conviction. His eventual presidential pardon reignited debates about accountability and political rehabilitation in Nigeria.

Crime › Odogwu Asaba’s Wife Breaks Silence: My Husband Had Affair With Her, Not Rape by yarofearless(op): 8:50am On Aug 27
The wife of embattled Delta-based content creator, Ifeanyi Ogbonna, popularly known as Odogwu Asaba, has publicly defended her husband amid the ongoing controversy surrounding the death of a 20-year-old woman who accused him of sexual assault before her death.

Speaking for the first time since the case gained national attention, the woman admitted that her husband had an affair with the deceased but strongly rejected allegations that he raped her.

According to her, while she was deeply hurt by the alleged extramarital relationship, she does not believe her husband forced himself on the young woman.

Her comments come weeks after the Delta State Police Command arrested Ogbonna following allegations that he sexually assaulted the woman after inviting her to Asaba under the promise of mentoring her in content creation. Police said the woman later returned home distressed and subsequently died after allegedly ingesting a poisonous substance. Investigations are still ongoing.

The case sparked outrage across social media after a video allegedly recorded by the deceased before her death surfaced online. In the emotional recording, she reportedly narrated her ordeal and accused the content creator of assaulting her.

However, Odogwu Asaba’s wife insisted that there was more to the story than what had been presented publicly.

She maintained that although her husband may have been involved in a relationship with the deceased, she does not believe the encounter amounted to rape.

Her remarks have further divided public opinion, with some Nigerians arguing that only a thorough police investigation and possible court proceedings can establish the truth surrounding the allegations.

The Delta State Police Command has continued its investigation into the matter since Ogbonna’s arrest. Authorities have stated that all aspects of the allegations, including the circumstances leading to the young woman’s death, are being examined.

Police spokesperson SP Bright Edafe previously disclosed that investigators received a petition alleging that the deceased travelled to Asaba after being invited by Ogbonna, who allegedly promised to support and train her as a content creator. The command said the suspect was arrested after preliminary investigations commenced.

The case remains one of the most talked-about stories on Nigerian social media, with many calling for justice and urging authorities to ensure a transparent investigation.

As of the time of filing this report, Ogbonna remains under investigation, while law enforcement authorities have yet to announce whether formal charges will be filed against him.
