Kunle106: There are indications that the on-going strike embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Nigerian Universities might be called off next Thursday.

Governor of Benue State, Mr Gabriel Suswam who dropped this hint Friday said ASUU and the Federal Government had reached agreements on all the contentious issues that led to the industrial action except two.

Suswam who was appointed as Chairman of the Needs Assessment Implementation Committee of the Federal Government said after next Thursday’s deliberations between his Committee and the various agencies of government funding tertiary education, all the contentious issues would likely be resolved.

Speaking to news men in Abuja after attending a meeting between the Federal Government’s delegation and ASUU, Suswam said that agreements had been reached by both parties on all issues except two.

Said he: “We reached agreements on all issues except two. These two issues are those of earned allowances of lecturers and intervention for the federal universities. These are the only issues that are still outstanding.”

The Benue Governor further said he believed that by next week after his Committee would have arrived at an agreement on all the issues, ASUU would call off the strike.

He continued: ”The SGF would meet with the leadership of ASUU on the issue of earned allowances by next Monday.

Then my committee which is dealing with the issue of the needs assessment of the universities would meet again next Thursday and take another look at all the infrastructural deficits which the federal universities are facing.

If you go to our universities, you would agree that they are facing infrastructural deficits and that is why my committee would meet with all the funding agencies next Thursday for the purpose of prioritizing all the projects that need to be executed. We are going to invite all the agencies that are involved in the funding of the universities including the Central Bank of Nigeria.”

Suswam further stated that the issues on agreements have been reached include: those of retirement age for university lecturers- which has now been increased from 65 to 70 years; the constitution of the governing councils of the universities which has already been done by the Government; the setting up of a pension administrator and the issue of persuading companies operating in the country to set up research centers in the universities.

Said he: “As far as I am concerned, if the issues concerning intervention and earned allowances are resolved next week, then the strike could be called off”

Among those who attended the meeting were Secretary to the Government of the Federation Senator Anyim Pius Anyim, Minister of Labour, Hon. Emeka Wogu, Minister of Education, Prof. Ruqayatu Rufai and President of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Dr Nasir Fagge.

UPDATES FROM THE STRIKE! Both parties( federal govt and ASUU) are meeting today..

ABUJA— THE Federal Government and the Academic
Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, will meet today on
the ongoing strike embarked upon by university
lecturers over the non- implementation of the 2009
FG/ASUU agreement.
This came against the backdrop of Minister of Labour
and Productivity, Chief Emeka Wogu’s denial of a
newspaper report that the Federal Government
agreement with ASUU could not work.
The minister said he never made such a statement
and that he only appealed to the union to return to
the classrooms while negotiations continued.
Last week, the two opposing sides had met with the
Senate and House of Representatives Joint
Committee on Education to find a solution to the
crisis, so students could go back to school, but the
meeting ended in deadlock and the two groups were
told to go back and review their positions to come
back on a latter date.
But the Minister of Education, Professor Ruqayyatu
Rufa’I, while fielding questions from newsmen,
yesterday, disclosed that the Federal Government
had no other option than to meet with the union to
resolve the crisis, so students can return to school.
Prof. Rufa’I said: “Government has no option but to
make efforts to resolve ASUU crisis. Mr. President is
concerned, everybody is concerned, definitely, efforts
will have to be made to have students back in
classrooms.
“So we are pleading with our colleagues in ASUU to
call off the strike but we are meeting with them, we
are meeting tomorrow (today).
President of Academic Staff Union of Universities,
ASUU, Dr. Nasir Fagge, has said Nigeria’s economy
had been taken over by Chinese as leaders in Nigeria
have refused to provide quality education to the
people, while the Chinese government trained its
people in all sectors with the necessary facilities.
Dr. Fagge in an interview with Vanguard said
Nigeria’s economy will continue to dwindle except
leaders of the country provided universities with
adequate facilities to give qualitative education to
the youths.
He said: “The thing about it is that, if other countries
are investing about 28-30 per cent of their annual
budget in education, typically Ghana, even this year,
Ghana has committed 28 per cent of its total budget
to education, if they can do it, why not Nigeria.
“Is it because we are under the dictates of IMF and
World Bank, don’t we want to do what is right, must
our children continue to go to Ghanaian university for
education, must our people be leaving our country,
be brain-drained to other countries to go and develop
their economies, must we continue this way”?
“Even now, what is happening is that the Chinese
have taken over our economy simply because they
have trained their people, they have educated their
people and their people can compete any where in
the World that is why our President is going to China
to go and sign MoU (Memorandum of Understanding)
.
“Why cant we do the same, why cant we train our
people and give them quality education so that we
will also be exporting them to go and carry out
assignments in other countries and then bring
foreign exchange for our country and then we will not
need to be importing people to come and do some
sundry projects in our country.
“Most of the key contracts now are being forwarded
to Chinese companies; all our companies are down
simply because we have not paid high premium to
our education sector that is what we are saying. Are
we happy with what we are producing as graduates?
We are not that is what we are crying out for.
“Let people understand that it is the pride of an
intellectual to produce a well rounded intellectual
who is even better than himself, but that is not what
we are having. We are having people because we
don’t have the facilities to give them state of-the-art
training and we are crying out and people are telling
us all sorts of things.”
ASUU president, who expressed optimism that the
agreement the union entered into with the federal
government would be implemented, also decried the
moving in droves of Nigerian students to Ghana,
since he country paid more attention to the
education sector.
“This thing that they are saying agreement cannot
be implemented, we have heard it before. Prof. Ben
Nwabueze was always in the media when he was the
Minister of Education saying that it was an
agreement of imperfect obligation,” he said.

Harbosede02: summarise it pls
The concise message of the news is that, the talks between federal government and ASUU is now yielding result rather than the former state of quagmire that is said to av gone viral on the social media...the minister also debunked the misinformation passed by the media that jonathan government cannot implement d demands..he denied saying such, but claimed that he only said that the federal govt will look for an alternative to call off the 3 weeks strike...hope that helps?
EducationRe: OOU 2013/2014 Admission by Yaungdee(op): 10:35am On Jul 25, 2013
MINISTER of Labour and Productivity, Chief Emeka
Wogu, has said the ongoingnegotiation on the 2009
Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU)
agreement with the Federal Government is yielding
fruits.
Also, in a statement signed by the Assistant Director
(Press) in the ministry, Mr Samuel Olowookere, the
minister said the headlines credited to him in two
national newspapers on Wednesday thatthe ASUU
agreement could not be implemented was not the
true representation of what he said.
Olowookere said the minister was misquoted, as he
did not say the government would not implement the
agreement, but assured that the crisis would be
resolved soon through the ongoing negotiation.
He referred Nigerians, especially the ASUU members
and other stakeholders, to reach out to other media
that captured the event.

Ekennovative: Pls. if you've successfully printed out your registration form, kindly assist me.
I followed this procedure as indicated on the site;
1. Filling of pin, serial jamb reg no.

2. Upload and submission of passport.

3. Filling jamb result details

instead of seeing a 'print application' link, the only link is saw was 'OK' with instructions above it that said something about re-checking jamb reg. No.

I need help, i can't still see the final printout section or did i miss any procedure?

this is the response I got

“Jamb data stored. Please re-check your UTME Registration No. If it is wrong, correct it and then re-submit the Page to display your Post UTME Application Form.

You are required to fill the Application Form and submit it to display the Summary Page where you print your Application Form by clicking on [PRINT APPLICTION FORM].”
After each page make sure u save, and the final page requires u to submit ur data so as to save it on the data base of the school, afterwhich u will be able to do a print-out of ur slip...
