PoliticsJonathan Handed Over An Empty Treasury: I Almost Absconded - Buhari by yGist(op): 2:52am On Nov 04, 2016
President Buhari said he felt like absconding after taking over from Jonathan and was told that Nigeria had no savings. He made this known yesterday during a presidential parley and presentation of report on poverty reduction by Course 38 of National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, NIPSS, Kuru, Plateau State, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The president said: ‘’For 16 years and eight consecutive governments of the other party, you know that there was unprecedented revenue realized. The oil projection which can be verified was 2.1 million barrels per day. ‘’1999-2015, the average cost of each Nigerian barrel of oil was $100 per barrel. When we came it fell to less than $30 per barrel and is now oscillating between 40 and 50.

“Actually I felt like absconding because 27 out of 36 states in Nigeria cannot pay salaries and we know they have no other source than to depend on salaries. And I asked any savings? I was told there was no savings.”

Any solution in view?

CrimeUnbelievable! Soldier Shot Comrades And Civilians Over Argument by yGist(op): 12:26am On Nov 04, 2016
Silva Ribeiro, 23, turned his gun on colleagues as they slept at a military communications centre in April before also killing three civilians including two Spanish technicians as they arrived for work. He ended up killing 11 people including eight of his comrades over a petty argument. He was apprehended two days after the shootings at the Monte Tchota facility on the island of Santiago.

A military tribunal on the Atlantic archipelago heard that a minor disagreement over guard duty the day before ended with Ribeiro promising to kill his colleagues. Judge Ana Reis speaking at the military court said “the psychiatric report showed that the man behind this massacre demonstrated psycopathic behavioural patterns”.

Ribeiro was “fully aware” of what he was doing during the April 25 rampage, she said, ordering him to pay 11 million escudos ($110,000) to the victims’ families. He was also convicted of aggravated theft and illegal usage of a firearm, as well as abandoning his military post and was therefore jailed for 35 years.

Interestingly, Ribeiro kept quiet throughout the court session but at the end said: “I offer my apologies to the nation.”.

Can apologies raise the dead?

PoliticsEkiti INEC Secretary Kidnapped Today by yGist(op): 11:55pm On Nov 03, 2016
The Administrative Secretary of the Independent National Electoral Commission in Ekiti State, Muslim Omoleke got kidnapped by Thursday by unknown gunmen.”.

Omoleke was said to have been kidnapped at Iwaraja, a town near Ilesa in Osun State, at about 4pm. He was abducted and driven away into the forest of Ijesaland, along with his driver and his child.

Acording to the spokesperson of INEC in Ekiti, Alhaji Taiwo Gbadegesin, Omoleke had gone on visits to Ondo and Osun States respectively. He said they later released his child and the driver along with the vehicle but took him away and nothing has been heard ever since then.

He also said that security agencies in Ondo, Osun and Ekiti states had been contacted.

Shouldn't more security be provided for INEC Staff?

PoliticsBuhari Is Not A Mistake, He Is God's Choice - CAN Chairman by yGist(op): 11:26pm On Nov 03, 2016
The Chairman of Christian Association Nigeria in the 19 Northern States including Abuja, Rev. Yakubu Pam, said it was not a mistake that God chose President Buhari to lead the country at these challenging times.

Rev. Yakubu Pam said: “We are ready to support your administration to deliver good governance. You have good intentions for Nigeria, judging from the programmes that have been outlined,”. He also highlighted ethno-religious challenges in the country, freedom of worship, and herdsmen/farmers’ clashes in their discussion with the President.

The CAN leader commended the Buhari administration for the blow dealt Boko Haram insurgents, leading to comparative peace in the North-east, the return of 21 abducted schoolgirls from Chibok, and the anti-corruption war, which he urged “should be fought to the logical conclusion.”

The President, in a statement by the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, also promised to restore peace to all parts of the country: “Restoring peace is top priority. We will enable the law enforcement agencies to combat all forms of violent crimes, and ensure that our people live in peace.” He also said that the government would maintain the priority it has placed on agriculture and mines and steel development, “to kick-start the economy.”

Is Buhari still God's choice?

PoliticsBuhari Has Considered The Inevitable Disintegration Of Nigeria - IPOB by yGist(op): 8:15pm On Nov 03, 2016
President Buahari had earlier said that “We are determined to make life comfortable and affordable to all Nigerians. If anybody has a country to go to, let him go, we will stay here and salvage our country,”. But the Indigenous People of Biafra reacted almost immediately to it on Wednesday in a statement entitled, “IPOB welcomes Muhammadu Buhari’s declaration on the impending disintegration of Nigeria, but says no to conditions”. This statement was jointly signed by Barrister Emma Mmezu and Dr. Clifford Iroanya.

The Pro-Biafra group further said that “We the IPOB are delighted with the comments attributed to retired Major-General Muhammadu Buhari, who seems to have bowed to international pressure to consider the inevitable disintegration of Nigeria, though with conditions we find inconsistent with common sense and logic.”

“The underlying objective in Buhari’s statement is to create the impression that the South-South is not part of Biafraland, hence the upland areas of Biafra, Igbo, can leave Nigeria while the riverine areas Ibibio, Efik, Izon, Itshekiri, Urhobo, Isoko will remain part of Nigeria.”.

“Successive governments of Nigeria have continued to deceive the gullible public that the reason we, IPOB, are agitating for Biafra is because of oil in the Niger Delta region, without making obvious the fact that oil was first found in commercial quantity in Imo State before Oloibiri in Bayelsa State. Sadly many people are still ignorant of the fact that active oil and gas extraction is happening today in Anambra, Imo, Abia and Igbo parts of Rivers State.”

Will South-South join IPOB to leave Nigeria?

PoliticsBoko Haram: Jonathan Was Unserious - Osinbajo by yGist(op): 8:46pm On Nov 02, 2016
Vice-President Osinbajo unravelled the mystery behind the victories of Boko Haram during Jonathan's government when he delivered a lecture at the Harvard University’s Weatherland Centre for International Affairs, United States titled: “The unravelling of Boko Haram and the rebuilding of the North-East of Nigeria”.

In his speech, Osinbajo said that, PDP found it convenient to claim that Boko Haram sect was sponsored by a northern-Muslim political elite so as to successfully discredit the government led by a Christian. He said this was done so as to weaken the only viable opposition (APC) as at then by giving it the outlook of the political wing of the Boko Haram sect. He said that many Nigerians believed the propaganda until President Buhari narrowly escaped death during an attack by the same sect in Kaduna.

Osinbanjo also believes that Jonathan and his cronies cynically seemed to have considered Boko Haram as a way of weakening the opposition since their attacks were more rampant in states where the opposition had strong base. That this also led to the extensive corruption in arms procurement estimated at about $15bn so that the military can be poorly equipped and demoralised.

He also said that the abduction of more than 200 secondary schoolgirls in Chibok were also as a result of Jonathan's inept handling of the insurgency and it took public outrage for Jonathan's attention to be fully drawn to it. But Buhari declared during the Presidential Election that he would defeat Boko Haram and restore peace to affected states. And within six months of Buhari’s Presidency, the sect had been dislodged from all the local governments they conquered and had retreated into Sambisa Forest and other northern border towns and villages.

Was Jonathan truly not committed?

PoliticsIgbos Don't Understand Politics, Only Good In Trading - Kalu by yGist(op):
Orji Kalu, a former Governor of Abia State, took a swipe at his people when he labelled them good in everything except politics. Kalu made this known recently while granting an interview with The Editor-in-Chief of The Interview magazine, Mr. Azu Ishiekwene.

Kalu said most of the Igbo elite were selfish and should blame themselves and not the Federal Government for their woes. Kalu said that Igbo politicians should go and learn the discipline of the Yorubas if they want to succeed politically.

Kalu who was obviously unhappy with successor, Theodore Orji wish his successor had showed the same discipline demonstrated by a former Governor of Lagos State, Babatunde Fashola when differences occurred with his predecessor, Bola Tinubu over Fashola’s second term.

According to him, “The Igbo have no discipline in terms of politics. They are very good traders; they’re good in anything they do, but they don’t understand politics.” Recalling his conversation with President Buhari, where the President wondered aloud “why previous high-profile Igbo appointees had done nothing for the region.”?

Is Kalu right about his claim?
