Babalola at a media briefing in Ado Ekiti expressed worry that the 2023 general elections will be conducted under the 1999 constitution against his advice saying the poll will only reproduce those who have brought Nigeria to a sordid state. “It is not who can make a difference that will win this election, I repeat, it is not the person who has all it takes – age, health, education, and patriotism, that will win the election; the winner of this election I can bet it, is going to be the person who has made money in this country. “It is the person who has the money that will win,” the legal icon buttressed. In his opinion, the recent endorsement of Peter Obi of the Labour Party by former President Olusegun Obasanjo does not factor in the role money bags will play in the election. He bemoaned the huge and crippling debt owed by Nigeria in addition to worsening security and economic challenges, insisting that only a new constitution with stringent conditions for political candidates, will save Nigeria from a total collapse. “A man who wants to rule the whole country or any part of the country, ought to be screened. Has he ever worked before, what type of work did he do, did he steal there, was he a good manager, does he pay his taxes regularly, what contributions has he made to society? “You cannot just come from nowhere and become president, become governor, become member of house; these are transactional business men. “I still stand by my suggestion that any election conducted under the present 1999 Constitution cannot and will not produce new leaders with new ideas, rather any election conducted with the 1999 Constitution will merely result in recycling people who have brought Nigeria to grinding poverty, unemployment, under-funded education, and insecurity,” the educationist emphasized. |
Pelé, the Brazilian king of soccer who won a record three World Cups and became one of the most commanding sports figures of the last century, died Thursday. He was 82. The standard-bearer of “the beautiful game” had undergone treatment for colon cancer since 2021. The medical center where he had been hospitalized for the last month said he died of multiple organ failure as a result of the cancer. “Pelé changed everything. He transformed football into art, entertainment,” Neymar, a fellow Brazilian soccer star, said on Instagram. “Football and Brazil elevated their standing thanks to the King! He is gone, but his magic will endure. Pelé is eternal!” A funeral was planned for Monday and Tuesday, with his casket to be carried through the streets of Santos, the coastal city where his storied career began, before burial. Widely regarded as one of soccer’s greatest players , Pelé spent nearly two decades enchanting fans and dazzling opponents as the game’s most prolific scorer with Brazilian club Santos and the Brazil national team. His grace, athleticism and mesmerizing moves transfixed players and fans. He orchestrated a fast, fluid style that revolutionized the sport — a samba-like flair that personified his country’s elegance on the field. He carried Brazil to soccer’s heights and became a global ambassador for his sport in a journey that began on the streets of Sao Paulo state, where he would kick a sock stuffed with newspapers or rags. In the conversation about soccer’s greatest players, only the late Diego Maradona, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are mentioned alongside Pelé. Different sources, counting different sets of games, list Pelé’s goal totals anywhere between 650 (league matches) and 1,281 (all senior matches, some against low-level competition.) The player who would be dubbed “The King” was introduced to the world at 17 at the 1958 World Cup in Sweden, the youngest player ever at the tournament. He was carried off the field on teammates’ shoulders after scoring two goals in Brazil’s 5-2 victory over the host country in the final. Injury limited him to just two games when Brazil retained the world title in 1962, but Pelé was the emblem of his country’s World Cup triumph of 1970 in Mexico. He scored in the final and set up Carlos Alberto with a nonchalant pass for the last goal in a 4-1 victory over Italy. The image of Pelé in a bright, yellow Brazil jersey, with the No. 10 stamped on the back, remains alive with soccer fans everywhere. As does his trademark goal celebration — a leap with a right fist thrust high above his head. Pelé’s fame was such that in 1967 factions of a civil war in Nigeria agreed to a brief cease-fire so he could play an exhibition match in the country. He was knighted by Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II in 1997. When he visited Washington to help popularize the game in North America, it was the U.S. president who stuck out his hand first. “My name is Ronald Reagan, I’m the president of the United States of America,” the host said to his visitor. “But you don’t need to introduce yourself because everyone knows who Pelé is.” Pelé was Brazil’s first modern Black national hero but rarely spoke about racism in a country where the rich and powerful tend to hail from the white minority. Opposing fans taunted Pelé with monkey chants at home and all over the world. “He said that he would never play if he had to stop every time he heard those chants,” said Angelica Basthi, one of Pelé’s biographers. “He is key for Black people’s pride in Brazil, but never wanted to be a flagbearer.” Pelé’s life after soccer took many forms. He was a politician -- Brazil’s Extraordinary Minister for Sport -- a wealthy businessman, and an ambassador for UNESCO and the United Nations. He had roles in movies, soap operas and even composed songs and recorded CDs of popular Brazilian music. As his health deteriorated, his travels and appearances became less frequent. He was often seen in a wheelchair during his final years and did not attend a ceremony to unveil a statue of him representing Brazil’s 1970 World Cup team. Pelé spent his 80th birthday isolated with a few family members at a beach home. Born Edson Arantes do Nascimento, in the small city of Tres Coracoes in the interior of Minas Gerais state on Oct. 23, 1940, Pelé grew up shining shoes to buy his modest soccer gear. Pelé’s talent drew attention when he was 11, and a local professional player brought him to Santos’ youth squads. It didn’t take long for him to make it to the senior squad. Despite his youth and 5-foot-8 frame, he scored against grown men with the same ease he displayed against friends back home. He debuted with the Brazilian club at 16 in 1956, and the club quickly gained worldwide recognition. The name Pelé came from him mispronouncing the name of a player called Bilé . He went to the 1958 World Cup as a reserve but became a key player for his country’s championship team. His first goal, in which he flicked the ball over the head of a defender and raced around him to volley it home, was voted as one of the best in World Cup history. The 1966 World Cup in England — won by the hosts — was a bitter one for Pelé, by then already considered the world’s top player. Brazil was knocked out in the group stage and Pelé, angry at the rough treatment, swore it was his last World Cup. He changed his mind and was rejuvenated in the 1970 World Cup. In a game against England, he struck a header for a certain score, but the great goalkeeper Gordon Banks flipped the ball over the bar in an astonishing move. Pelé likened the save — one of the best in World Cup history — to a “salmon climbing up a waterfall.” Later, he scored the opening goal in the final against Italy, his last World Cup match. In all, Pelé played 114 matches with Brazil, scoring a record 95 goals, including 77 in official matches. His run with Santos stretched over three decades until he went into semi-retirement after the 1972 season. Wealthy European clubs tried to sign him, but the Brazilian government intervened to keep him from being sold, declaring him a national treasure. On the field, Pelé’s energy, vision and imagination drove a gifted Brazilian national team with a fast, fluid style of play that exemplified “O Jogo Bonito” -- Portuguese for “The Beautiful Game.” His 1977 autobiography, “My Life and the Beautiful Game,” made the phrase part of soccer’s lexicon. |
Lionel Messi said he felt "disrespected" by Netherlands coach Louis van Gaal and blasted the referee after Argentina beat the Dutch 4-3 on penalties in a thrilling World Cup quarterfinal at Lusail Iconic Stadium in Qatar on Friday. Messi assisted Argentina's first goal for Nahuel Molina and then scored a second from the penalty spot as Argentina took a seemingly commanding 2-0 lead in the 73rd minute. But two late goals from Dutch substitute Wout Weghorst, the second off the back of a free kick in the 11th minute of stoppage time, sent the match to extra time and eventually a penalty shootout. The contest, though, got increasingly heated. At one point Leandro Paredes blasted the ball in the direction of the Netherlands bench before Dutch captain Virgil van Dijk responded by knocking Paredes to the ground. After his goal, Messi directed a celebration toward the Dutch coaching staff and then confronted Van Gaal after the match. "I feel disrespected by Van Gaal after his pregame comments and some Dutch players spoke too much during the game," Messi told reporters. Van Gaal had suggested ahead of the quarterfinal that Messi did little to help his team when they don't have the ball. "Van Gaal sells that he plays good football and then he puts forwards in the box and starts throwing long balls," Messi said of Van Gaal's tactics. "We deserved to go through and that's what happened." Goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, who was the hero for Argentina in the shootout by saving the Netherlands' first two efforts from Van Dijk and Steven Berghuis, similarly had strong words for Van Gaal. "I heard Van Gaal saying 'we've got an advantage on penalties, if we go to penalties we win,'" Martinez said. "I think he needs to keep his mouth shut." - Ogden: World Cup better for Messi ensuring Argentina didn't implode Both players were also fiercely critical of the performance from Spanish referee Antonio Mateu Lahoz. "I don't want to talk about the referee because you can't be honest," Messi told Argentine TV. "If you talk they sanction you; FIFA must think about it, they can't put a referee who isn't up to the task for these instances." Added Martinez: "I thought we controlled the game really well. We went 2-0 up but the ref started to give everything to them. "All of a sudden a good header for them and all turned upside down. The ref added 10 minutes for no reason. "He gave free kicks outside the box for them two, three times. He just wanted them to score, that's basically it, so hopefully we don't have that ref anymore. He's useless." Argentina's win puts them through to their fifth World Cup semifinal and second in the past three tournaments, where they will take on Brazil's conquerors Croatia. "We didn't expect to go to extra time, let alone to penalties," Messi said. "We suffered, but we are playing a World Cup quarterfinal. "Argentina shows game by game that we know how to play. We came out with intensity and desire and we understood the moments of the game. "We needed this and we are happy the whole country is celebrating now. [Martinez] once again showed that he's the best saving penalties. "Croatia is a great team. They move the ball very well, they have been working together for a long time, it will be very hard" |
Tesla CEO Elon Musk explained why he bought Twitter in a tweeted note in which he spoke about promoting a "digital town square" where various beliefs can be expressed within limitations. "The reason I acquired Twitter is because it is important to the future of civilization to have a common digital town square, where a wide range of beliefs can be debated in a healthy manner without resorting to violence," he wrote in a tweet on Thursday, addressing advertisers. Musk visited Twitter's headquarters in San Francisco on Wednesday and asserted his presence as he walked into the offices carrying a sink and later updating his Twitter bio to describe himself as "Chief Twit." His $44 billion planned deal to take over the company is expected to close on Friday. The billionaire previously tried to pull out from the deal, which prompted the company to sue him in response. In his Thursday note, Musk explained that he bought Twitter to promote the opportunity for dialogue, which he said was "lost" because of the way media "fueled and catered" to "polarized extremes" with the intent that it would generate revenue through the "relentless" pursuit of clicks. "There is currently a great danger that social media will splinter into far right wing and far left wing echo chambers that generate more heat and divide our society," he said, adding that Twitter will be warm and welcoming under his ownership. He also explained that he didn't purchase Twitter "because it would be easy." "I didn't do it to make more money. I did it to try to help humanity, whom I love. And I do so with humility, recognizing that failure in pursuing this goal, despite our best efforts, is a very real possibility," he said . |
ON the eve of the 20th Chinese Communist Party congress, which later confirmed a historic third term for President Xi Jinping, the US announced its National Security Strategy, reiterating its overwhelming priority is to “outcompete China”. The timing may have been coincidental. But it was telling that while President Xi was proclaiming China’s global power had increased, the US was resolving to deal with its “greatest geopolitical challenge” — China. Asserting that the post-Cold War era is over, the NSS said competition was now underway between the major powers to shape the future of the international order in the “decisive decade” ahead. The US document affirmed that the country’s principal strategic goal was to prevail in the competition with China, the only nation with the economic, military, diplomatic and technological muscle to reshape the global order. To pursue this aim, it sought to strengthen coalitions it was building, through Nato, the AUKUS security partnership, the Quad, Five Eyes group as well as its Indo-Pacific policy. Russia needed to be constrained but the challenge it posed was different. While it constituted an immediate threat evidenced by the Ukraine war, it lacked China’s broad-spectrum capabilities. Given the politically fractured and polarised state of the US today, the NSS acknowledged America needed to fix its damaged democracy to be able to compete abroad. Claiming the national security strategy had “broken down the dividing line between foreign and domestic policy”, it said internal shortcomings would have to be remedied. Apart from a challenged democracy, it mentioned the threat from “domestic violent extremists”, including those “motivated by racial or ethnic prejudice”. Building internal strength meant investment in innovation, infrastructure, industrial and technological progress. The theme of building domestic strength dominated President Xi’s address to the party congress. With development the top priority, his emphasis was on renewing “high-quality” economic growth by focusing on innovation and education and accelerating self-reliance in science and technology. |
Kim Jong-un says Pyongyang has "nothing to talk about with enemies" following joint US-South Korean military drills The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) does not see any point in engaging in talks with the US and South Korea, the country's leader, Kim Jong-un, has said. In a report released by North Korean state news agency KCNA on Monday, Kim is quoted as saying the " enemies have still been talking about dialogue and negotiations while posing military threats to us. " He went on to state that Pyongyang has " nothing to talk about with our enemies, and we do not feel the need to do so. " According to KCNA, Kim stressed that a clear signal should be sent to the nations escalating the situation in the region. Speaking during an inspection of the country's tactical nuclear operation units' drills held from September 25 to October 9, he noted that the DPRK will keep a close watch on the " unstable security situation on the Korean Peninsula and all military moves by the enemies. " Pyongyang will take " all military countermeasures, if necessary, " Kim was reported as saying. Commenting on the multiple launches of ballistic missiles by the North Korean military in recent weeks, the KCNA report said the decision to conduct them was made in late September in response to large-scale military exercises by the US and South Korea. The firing of the rockets, including one which flew over Japan and landed in the Pacific Ocean last Tuesday, is said to have been a test of Pyongyang's deterrence capabilities. Kim warned that the "irresponsible aggravation of the situation by the U.S. and South Korean regimes" will elicit an even stronger response from North Korea. He reiterated that the country's nuclear combat forces fulfill the role of defending the " dignity, sovereignty and right to survival of the DPRK. " In late September, the US, South Korea, and Japan began a joint anti-submarine drill in the Sea of Japan - the first such exercise since 2017. The maneuvers featured the USS Ronald Reagan nuclear-powered aircraft carrier along with three other warships. Representing Japan was an Asahi-class destroyer, while South Korea deployed the destroyer Menmu the Great. |
The City of Washington D.C. in the United States has proclaimed October 1 as Nigerian-American Day. The declaration is in consonance in celebration of Nigeria’s 62nd Independence Day anniversary. The proclamation was made in a statement by the Mayor of Washington DC, Muriel Bowser. Bowser noted that the District of Columbia had one of the largest Nigerian immigrant populations in America. The Mayor hailed the contributions of Nigerian-Americans some of whom are civic leaders, innovators, and entrepreneurs. Bowser said Nigerian music and art, particularly Afrobeats and Nollywood, enrich the cultural economy and strengthen cultural ties. The Nigerian Center provides a platform for heritage preservation and expands the pathways for Nigerian immigrants to become Nigerian-Americans. “The city’s Office on African Affairs works with the Nigerian Center to foster economic inclusion and advancement and to promote Nigerian culture”, Bowser noted. The Nigerian Center is the first immigrant and cultural center for the Nigerian diaspora in America. The establishment offers financial inclusion and social justice opportunities for members of the Nigerian-American community in the U.S.. |
