Nollywood star Monalisa Chinda has said actresses are often quiet about incidents of sexual harassment over the fear of stigmatisation and the resultant effect on their careers.


Chinda said this while appearing as a guest on The Other News, a satirical show hosted by comic-actor Okey Bakassi on Channels Television.

The Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) had recently expressed its determination to put an end to all forms of sexual harassment in Nollywood.

When asked to weigh in on the subject, Chinda said many actresses are not comfortable enough to open up about such incidents, while adding that she’s never been a victim.

She said:


“It’s a bit uncomfortable for someone to come out and say I was cornered to sleep with a producer because of a role,”

“They keep quiet about it because of their careers. Apart from that, the society stigmatises these women. So you just swallow your pride.

“When you are outside the shores of Africa, women are heroes for coming out to speak about sexual abuse, but here.”

Speaking further, Chinda expressed her standpoint on domestic abuse and also urged women to avoid “provoking” their husband or instigating violence.

On-Air personality, radio and television, Toke makinwa, has revealed how she was advised to withdraw from the University of Lagos (Unilag) due to poor performance and negligence.
She said this at the conclusion of her book tour ‘’On Becoming ‘’ which took place yesterday at the University of Lagos.

According to her, she decided to end the tour at her alma mater because she had trouble studying at the school.
She said she was using the medium to inspire someone with her kind of story, as she believes sometimes a shared story can inspire someone to believe in themselves.

Reacting to the speech by the National secretary to the APC youth group, Mr Collins Edwin, Rugged man said via his Twitter handle that it’s Edwin who is ordering the government to make the arrest and not the government.

He said “The federal government did not order Peter of Psquare arrest, it's Mr. Collins Edwin, National Secretary, APC Youths that ordering the government to”

Peter Okoye also responded to the tweet by asking the National Secretary to order for goat meat as well. “Abeg make him Oder Egusi,pounded yam and goat meat join for the arrest I knw those youth will start from 70 and above Onye ala”.

This war of words was following the statement by the minister of Information, Lai Mohammed, who in a bid to grow the entertainment industry said that the government is working on laws to enforce entertainers to shoot videos in Nigeria.

He said in part “This government has agreed that henceforth, whatever we consume in Nigeria in terms of music and films must be made in Nigeria.

We cannot continue to go to South Africa or any other country to produce our films and then send them back to be consumed in Nigeria.”

Peter Okoye, one half of the Psquare duo was the first to react to this statement via his Twitter handle, where he said that the government had been failing since 1960.

He also said that it is entertainers who have been covering up for the shame the government has brought so far.

The APC youth group’s national Secretary fired back at Okoye, order him to be arrested for saying such. His statement read:
“We read the scurrilous remarks credited to Mr Peter Okoye of the Psquare group against the Federal Government’s job-saving policy in the entertainment industry with great anger and vexation.
