How To Calculate Quantity&cost Of Asbestors Or PVC Ceiling Needed 4 Your Project by saydfact(m): 5:14pm On Dec 27, 2017
Good-Day - Last class we learnt how to calculate the numbers of block needed for a project; if you missed that its available here >> https://www.nairaland.com/4191428/how-calculate-how-many-blocks

I'll be taking us on calculating the quantity and approximate cost of Asbestos ceiling sheet and PVC ceiling for a mini-flat (I have attached a plan for this purpose) and as usual our measurement would be done using the standard millimeter (mm) and meters (m) mode of measuring.

Note: If you're not familiar with the millimeters / meters tape, then find time to learn it or request for a tutorial in the comment box.

It would have been ideal to start with measuring roofing sheet but I decided to take a more simple task of measuring ceiling sheets so as to prepare us for the next and more complex task of measuring the roofing sheet... (lets get to business)

Things to do:

1. If you're measuring from your Architectural drawings, then ensure the basic dimensions are clear i.e the length and breath of each space.

2. If you're measuring from an existing project (i.e on site) write out all the spaces on a paper and write the dimension of each space before it e.g BEDROOM = 3600mm by 3600mm OR 3.6m by 3.6m (millimeter or meters)

3. Well, the next thing to note is identify the particular ceiling sheet you plan to use and its standard size (length and breath) e.g Asbestos ceiling sheet = 1200mm by 1200mm; PVC ceiling = 5,950mm by 250m and POP board = 600mm by 600mm. If you're using any other ceiling board, just get the size.

Once the information above is gotten, you can proceed to calculating how much board you'll need per space.

There are 2 methods of calculating the quantities - use whichever you find easier (we would calculate the living room using both methods and calculate others using only one of the methods). Now to business.

1. MATERIALS NEEDED FOR LIVING ROOM (using ASBESTOS 1200mm by 1200mm)

Living Room: Method One (Area)
This method simply implies finding the area of the space in question and diving it by the area of ceiling material to find out how many is needed.

Living Room = 3.9 x 4.5 = 17.55m2
Area of materials = 1.2 x 1.2 = 1.44m2

Hence: if 1 board = 1.44m2 how many board is in 17.55m2
= 17.55 / 1.44
= 12.19 boards = 13 boards (because you cannot buy 0.1 board, you have to buy 1 full board)

Lets use method Two:

Living Room: Method Two (L by B)
This method is a bit complex where the ceiling material isn't a square, it just needs a bit more care.

Size of Living Room; L= 3.9m by B=4.5m
Size of Ceiling Material; l= 1.2 by b= 1.2

Now Divide L by l and B by b = 3.9 / 1.2 and 4.5 /1.2 (just divide the upper nos by the nos below it)

= 3.25 and 3.75 (now multiple both)
= 3.25 x 3.75 = 12.19 = 13 boards.

Simple right ? but lets solve using method two only for PVC ceiling of size 5.95m by 0.25m below.

1. MATERIALS NEEDED FOR LIVING ROOM (using PVC 5,950mm by 250mm)

Size of Living Room; L= 3.9m by B=4.5m
Size of Ceiling Material; l= 5.95 by b= 0.25

Now Divide L by l and B by b = 3.9 / 5.95 and 4.5 /0.25 (just divide the upper nos by the nos below it)

= 0.66 and 18 (now multiple both)
= 0.66 x 18 = 11.88 = 12 pieces.

Simple right? You should try same using the Area method also.

THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IS TO ENSURE YOU GET THE RIGHT SIZE OF YOUR CEILING MATERIAL FROM YOUR LOCAL MARKET OR TRUSTED SOURCE (NOT GOOGLE) because THE GOOGLED SIZE MIGHT NOT BE AVAILABLE IN YOUR REGION.

Now that we know the principles - Let's quickly find out how many of the 1.2m by 1.2 asbestos board we would need.

Terrace = (5.06 / 1.44) = 4 pcs
Living Room = (17.55 / 1.44) = 13 pcs
Kitchen = (10.8 / 1.44) = 8 pcs
Store = (4.02 / 1.44) = 3 pcs
Bedroom 1 = (12.96 / 1.44) = 9 pcs
Bedroom 2 = (12.96 / 1.44) = 9 pcs
Toi / Bath = (2.97 / 1.44) = 3 pcs
Space b4 Bedroom = (1.35 / 1.44) = 1 pc

HENCE TOTAL = 50 pcs only - Normally there is no waste for this material (or ideally we have added it into the calculation when we approximated to the nearest whole number; Hence buy only 50 pcs + 1 more = 51 pcs only.

COST OF ASBESTOS BOARD....

Presently Nigerite Asbestos goes for between N1,400 - N1,500 per one; hence:
51 pcs x N1,500 = N76.5k (always add for transportation to site)

OKAY!!! - Thanks for following, practice using other ceiling materials and ask questions. (Our next class would be calculating roofing sheet)

Nice one open, what about the tie rod to hold the ceiling or rails in case of suspended ceiling.

Thanks Teewhy2.. I designed my tutorials in a way beginners can get it.

No one can learn cost estimation in one topic, so I limited this tutorial to ASBESTOS and PVC only.. The accessories na Ceiling 201... Lol

Thanks again.

I learnt a lot from your previous topic "How to calculate the number of blocks needed."

I just need to make out time to follow this one up.

Thanks for your effort

Nice eye opening topic.

I have a question. A room and parlour self contain which some people called 2 room self contain absetos ceiling of mine is confusing because it have extension before entering into kitchen and bathroom.

Both parlour and room has same size of normal uncut four ceiling joined Ai each edge of the wall with cut half ceiling plus another cut of the ½ ceiling which mean half ceiling was cut again to form square I hope you can understand @poster. This means in a room plus area leading to toilet/kitchen, one full ceiling is there with a slice ceiling to make up the wall. No in total I have regular standard 5 ceilings 4 cut half ceilings plus a cut from already cut ½ ceiling then a slice to patch or to complete the widow side. Note kitchen and bathroom/toilect has same complete ceiling and one quanter (⅓).

Now how can some calculate the actual ceiling and size of the rooms plus the bathroom and kitchen in someone want to buy a carpet or rug?

Hi,
Thanks for following and the compliments....

your question is a simple one:

solution:

each ceiling tile (asbestos) is 1.2m by 1.2m = 1.44m2
hence half of its (on both axis) is 0.6m by 0.6m = 0.36m2
while dividing it into 2 is 1.44 / 2 = 0.72m2
if its divided into 3 for the edges of the room then it is 1.44m2 / 3 = 0.48m2

count how many of each type you have, multiply by it's area and add all together.

eg
A room with 6 full size, 3 quarter size (0.6by0.6) and 3 of 1/3 would be:

1.44 x 6 = 8.64m2
0.36 x 3 = 1.08m2
0.48 x 3 = 1.44m2
hence: (Add all)

ROOM SIZE = 12m2 of Rugs. (this is actually a 4m by 3m room when sketched on paper)

GOODLUCK

Thank you very much for your last calculation on ceiling finishes.

Please can you just show us how to calculate on POP board too by using the same dimensions?
Thanks
