Tragedy was averted after a three storey building under construction collapsed yesterday night after the heavy rain in Aba, Abia state. According to sources, the building which is located at the extreme end of park road by east street, collapsed due to the alleged usage of substandard building materials. I strongly suspect that the plan originally called for a single storey...but someone added extra stories. Then there are the tales of contractors who use cheap and substandard stuff to get more money....at the expense of quality. Naija should be like China...firing squad for contractors and builders and architects who build substandard stuff. 1 Like |

which one is substandard material？ i never came across a substandard rod,cement,sharp or red sand,chippings，etc . the problem here is bad architecture and re inforcement. the foundation was too weak due to lack of adequate reinforcements. imagine the dpc was so low, part of the building and doors are almost undergrounds. u dont build even a storey building in erosion prone places without fortifying foundations with strong chains and baskets ,...in good dpc s 2 Likes |

Greedy clients, greedy contractors... Why won't the building collapse when everyone is an engineer these days? No respect for professional ethics and advice. Money they're supposed to use to build a quality 1 storey building, they'll "manage" for 3 storey and give the job to quacks... Well there you go. 1 Like |

it is normal, thank God no life was lost, but make we try go tru plans b4 we start to construct building because the weight of your roof alone is enough to shake your building if not well constructed properly at the foundation level |
