Edo State Government Issues Ultimatum To Illegal Miners In Ososo Community by Veegil: 2:38pm On May 06
In response to concerns over illegal mining activities in the Egbetua Autonomous Community in Ososo, Akoko-Edo Local Area of Edo State, the state government has given illegal miners a seven-day ultimatum to vacate the site or face legal consequences.

The directive comes following reports of approximately 1,000 workers, predominantly from the northern region, operating in the area, much to the dismay of local residents. The mining site, which has been operational for over 25 years, is situated within the Odo bush, approximately 15 kilometers from Ososo town.

Confirming the situation, Chief Peter Momoh, the Iddu Oremeh Osese of Egbetua, emphasized the need for government intervention due to environmental degradation and increased criminal activities, including frequent kidnappings.

In a bid to address the issue, a quit notice was issued to the illegal miners by the community leaders, with a subsequent appeal to Governor Godwin Obaseki to intervene. The ultimatum was delivered by the state Commissioner for Mining and Energy, Enaholo Ojiefoh, who emphasized the government’s commitment to combating crime and illegal activities.

Ojiefoh warned residents involved in the illegal mining operations to cease their activities, highlighting the deployment of security agencies to enforce the order. He emphasized the importance of collaboration with legal mining entities and investors for the area’s development.

Chief Peter Momoh expressed gratitude for the government’s intervention, signaling hope for a resolution to the ongoing issue.
